How to Save to a Memory Card on a Samsung Galaxy: Camera Storage and Moving Files

On a Galaxy model that has a microSD slot, you can point the Camera app at the card so new photos and videos save there, and you can copy or move existing files from internal storage to the card in My Files. You cannot set the card as the default destination for everything. Samsung’s guidance says only some apps offer an SD-card save option, so the card will not hold all of your apps, downloads, and data.

If you searched for “make SD card default storage” on a Samsung phone, the short answer is that there is no single device-wide switch. The steps below cover the two workflows Samsung documents: automatic saving for new camera captures and manual transfer of existing files.

Check that your exact model supports an SD card

SD-card support varies by Galaxy model, and the same series can differ between regions. Samsung’s file-management guidance for Canada says a model without an SD slot will not show an SD option at all. Before you change any setting, confirm the phone or tablet’s specifications on Samsung’s website for your model number, then check the following:

  • The device has a microSD slot, and the card is fully seated in the tray.
  • The card is a microSD format that your model supports. Choose a card that is compatible with your Galaxy rather than assuming any card will work.
  • The card shows up in My Files as an SD card or external storage. If it does not, the Camera and file options will not appear either.

Save new Camera photos and videos to the card

On a supported model, the Camera app has a storage-location setting that controls where new captures are written. Menu names and positions can change with the device and software version, so the labels below are the ones Samsung uses in its UK and Japan guidance rather than a guarantee for every phone.

The setting applies to Camera captures only. Other apps keep their own save locations.

Camera modes that may still save to internal storage

Even with SD card selected, Samsung Japan’s camera instructions, updated 4 February 2026, say some capture types can stay on internal storage. The guidance names:

  1. Open My Files and find the file or folder in internal storage.
  2. Touch and hold the item. Choose Copy to keep the original on the phone, or Move to transfer it.
  3. Select the SD card, then open or create the destination folder.
  4. Tap Copy here or Move here.
  5. Open the file on the card to confirm it plays or opens correctly. Only then delete the original if you used Copy, or if you want to keep a single copy after a Move, check the file again before you rely on it.

Use Copy when you need a second copy, for example a backup of a video you are editing. Use Move when the goal is to free internal space and you have confirmed the transfer worked.

Which parts of a Samsung phone can use the SD card

Samsung’s UK support article states: “It is not currently possible to set everything you do on your device to save to an SD card, however there are some apps that allow this functionality.” The table shows the options the official pages describe and where they stop.

Apps and games

Do not assume an app can be moved to the card. The official UK support material gives only the qualified “some apps” statement quoted above. If a particular app offers a storage option in its own settings, use that option. If it does not, the card cannot hold that app’s data through a general setting.

Troubleshooting when the card option is missing or saving fails

  • The SD card option does not appear: Confirm your model has a microSD slot. Then reseat the card and check that My Files lists it. A model without a slot will not show the option, whatever the card.
  • The Camera app switches back to internal storage: Samsung Japan notes that a full external card can cause the camera to prompt you to change the save location back to internal storage. Free space on the card, or delete or move files off it, then select SD card again.
  • The card is full or has old data: Move photos and videos to a computer or another storage location, then confirm the card’s free space in My Files. Samsung Japan also mentions that the card may need its data organized or the card replaced if it keeps filling or failing.
  • A file did not transfer: Check that the card is still recognized, retry the Move or Copy, and confirm the item at the destination before deleting the original.
  • A mode saves internally: Check whether it is one of the modes listed above. If it is, move the file after capture rather than expecting the card to receive it directly.

Samsung Singapore’s file guidance also notes that files on the card can be moved to a computer with a card reader or USB connection, which is useful if the phone’s space is full and you want to clear the card.
