To save in Everything, open the game’s save-selection screen from the Menu/Stats area, choose or confirm the current slot, verify that the slot has updated, and quit normally. The game’s official FAQ says that “99% of problems are solved by saving & reloading into your game.” If you are trapped or a form will not change, use Settings → Restart Area; it places you in a new thing in the same area. To unlock forms, inhabit a creature or object and move or sing until the bond registers in the encyclopedia.
What counts as progress in Everything?
Everything is an open-ended simulation by David O’Reilly in which you can inhabit animals, objects, plants, planets and other parts of the world. Progress is not organized around a conventional mission list or a required order of transformations. The practical record of what you have discovered is the in-game encyclopedia.

There are two separate jobs that players often call “progress”:
- Preserving your current run: recording where you are and the forms you have already bonded with.
- Expanding your collection: finding a new thing, inhabiting it, moving or singing with it, and checking that it has been added to the encyclopedia.
Saving protects the state you have reached; bonding is what makes a new form available again later. Neither process requires a fixed quest chain.

How to save your game safely
Use the in-game save-selection screen
An interface archive records a Select save screen in the game’s Menu/Stats portion. The available documentation does not establish one universal button sequence for Windows, macOS, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch or every controller layout, so labels and button prompts can vary by platform. Use the on-screen prompt rather than relying on a platform-specific shortcut.
- Pause or open the game menu.
- Go to the Menu/Stats area and open Select save (or the equivalent save-selection command shown by your edition).
- Select the slot that contains your current run, or choose an available slot if you are making a separate save.
- Confirm the save command shown on screen.
- Remain on the save screen long enough to verify that the slot’s information has changed or that the game displays a confirmation.
- Return to the game menu and quit through the game’s normal quit command.
This procedure is intentionally conservative: the sources confirm the save-selection screen, but they do not document a single “press this button everywhere” manual-save recipe. Verifying the slot before quitting is the important safeguard.
Does Everything autosave?
No authoritative source in the available documentation states how often a separate autosave runs, whether autosave is enabled on every platform, or how many rotating autosave slots exist. Do not assume that closing the application immediately after discovering a form has recorded it. Open the save-selection screen, confirm the slot, and then quit normally.

Make a deliberate save after bonding with a form you care about, after a long exploration session, and before experimenting with a reset. Saving before you use Settings → Restart Area gives you a known state to return to if the new area does not solve the problem.

Official recovery steps when the game is stuck
First response: save and reload
David O’Reilly’s official FAQ states: “99% of problems are solved by saving & reloading into your game.” Treat that as the first troubleshooting step for a character that will not respond, a camera or area that appears trapped, or a form change that does not complete.
- Open Select save and save or confirm the current slot.
- Quit the game normally.
- Launch Everything again and load the slot you just confirmed.
- Test movement, singing and form changes before trying a more disruptive reset.
Reloading refreshes the current session without deliberately changing the area. It is different from abandoning your encyclopedia: the purpose is to restart the run from a verified save.
If reloading does not clear the area: Restart Area
Use Settings → Restart Area when the current area remains unusable. The official FAQ says this restarts the area and spawns you into a new thing in the same area. It is an in-place reset, not a requirement to complete a particular quest and not a substitute for recording your save first.
- Save and verify the current slot if the menu is still usable.
- Open Settings.
- Select Restart Area and accept the confirmation prompt.
- When the area reloads, try controlling the new thing and resume exploration.
Low frame rate and “Disasters”
The official FAQ notes that a low frame rate can create “Disasters.” These are a performance-related behavior, not a progression system and not a way to unlock forms. If they interfere with play, switch them off in Settings. Saving, reloading and Restart Area address different problems; turning off Disasters does not replace a save.

Where PC save files are located
SteamDB lists the following Steam save-data directory and platform paths. Use them as locations for a personal backup or troubleshooting copy, not as instructions to edit, rename or manufacture save files.

A filesystem copy is useful when your goal is to protect a completed encyclopedia or preserve a known-good state before troubleshooting. It is not a replacement for the in-game save-selection screen: first make and verify the save, then close the game and copy the folder. The supplied documentation does not establish an equivalent user-accessible save path for PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, so do not apply the PC paths to those consoles.
How to unlock a new animal, object or other form
The bonding loop
Unlocking a form is an interaction rather than a checklist task:

- Inhabit it. Switch control to that thing using the game’s normal transformation or possession interaction.
- Move or sing. Continue moving or singing while controlling or encountering the form. This is the bonding action identified in the game’s guidance.
- Check the encyclopedia. Once the bond registers, the form is added to the in-game encyclopedia.
- Save. Open the save-selection screen and verify the slot before quitting if you want the discovery protected.
The key test is registration in the encyclopedia, not merely seeing a creature or briefly entering it. If the entry is missing, return to the form, move or sing for longer, and check the encyclopedia again before ending the session.

Why a form may not change immediately
A new form is not guaranteed simply because it is visible nearby. You need to inhabit or encounter it and perform the bonding behavior. A failed change can also be a temporary session problem; save, quit and reload before assuming the form is unavailable. If the area itself is malfunctioning, Settings → Restart Area creates a new starting thing in that area.
Returning to a form you already bonded with
Once a form has been bonded and recorded, it can be selected again later. Previously bonded forms are scaled to the current level when you select them, so you are not permanently locked to the size at which you first discovered them. This lets you revisit an earlier entry while continuing to explore at a different scale.

Use the encyclopedia as your progress tracker
Everything does not require you to unlock forms in a prescribed sequence. The encyclopedia is the meaningful collection and completion tracker: each successful bond adds another recorded form. Because no authoritative source publishes a definitive total number of forms, a universal completion percentage or an exact completion time, avoid treating an unverified number as a target.

What happens after the encyclopedia is complete?
Completing the encyclopedia unlocks a New Game Plus-type mode. This mode begins from a random object rather than a fixed starting form. The random start is part of the mode’s design; it does not indicate that your original collection was erased. Save the completed state before entering the mode if you want a separate backup of the collection.

Platform notes
The official game page lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, PC and Mac editions. The core ideas—bonding through movement or singing, recording the form in the encyclopedia, and using save/reload when stuck—apply across editions. Menu wording, controller buttons and the visibility of the save-selection screen can differ, so follow the prompts shown by your edition.
Only the Windows, macOS and Linux filesystem locations listed above are documented here. On PlayStation and Switch, rely on the game’s own save interface and the platform’s standard storage-management tools rather than looking for the PC directories.
A practical routine for uninterrupted exploration
- Begin an exploration session from a known save slot.
- When you find a promising thing, inhabit it and move or sing until its encyclopedia entry appears.
- Open Select save and verify that the slot has updated before leaving the session.
- If the game behaves strangely, reload that verified slot.
- If the same area remains stuck, use Settings → Restart Area.
- On PC, close the game and copy the documented save-data folder after important milestones such as a completed encyclopedia.
- When the encyclopedia is complete, expect the New Game Plus-type mode to begin from a random object.
This routine separates three actions that are easy to confuse: saving a run, resetting a troublesome area and bonding a new form. Keeping them separate makes it clear whether you are protecting progress, repairing a session or expanding the encyclopedia.
