To save a photo or video someone sent in a Messenger chat, press and hold the media item and choose the save option if it appears. For media in a shared album, open the group chat, tap its name, choose Media, then use the album’s download control. The exact labels and where the file ends up can vary by device and app version.
Save a photo or video sent in a Messenger chat
- Open the Messenger conversation containing the photo or video.
- Press and hold the media item.
- Choose the save option shown in the menu, if available. Meta described this long-press action for media received in end-to-end encrypted chats in its January 2022 Messenger announcement.
Meta’s announcement says, “You’ll be able to save a video or image by long-pressing on any media you receive.” Because that statement accompanied a feature announcement and is not a current device-by-device walkthrough, controls may differ with your app version or rollout. If you do not see a save choice, check the options currently shown for that item in Messenger.

Download media from a shared album
- Open the group conversation that contains the shared album.
- Tap the group chat name, then tap Media.
- Open the shared album and use its download control for the photo or video you want.
Meta says participants can view, add, delete, and download pictures and videos in shared albums. See its April 2024 announcement of shared albums. This route applies to items in a shared album; for an ordinary item sent in a conversation, use the long-press method when available.
Where Messenger saves the file
The official instructions cited here do not specify a universal destination for saved media. The location can depend on your device and app version, so do not assume every download will appear in the same Photos, Gallery, or Downloads location. After saving, check the device’s photo library or file manager for the item.

Use Meta’s account tools for a broader copy
If you want an account-level archive rather than one chat item, Meta provides a way to download a copy of Facebook information with category and date-range selection. It also offers a way to transfer copies of photos, videos, posts, or other information to another service. These are broader account tools, not a confirmed replacement for saving a particular Messenger attachment; Meta’s cited information does not establish that every Messenger photo or video is included. The first two routes are built-in Messenger actions and do not require a paid product or third-party downloader. A separate backup service is optional if you want another copy after saving the file.
