Save every voicemail you may need before you port your number, cancel the old line, change the SIM, or disable visual voicemail. A new carrier may not import the old mailbox, and some carriers set a deletion date. Open each important message in the currently working voicemail app, use Share or Send to, save the audio somewhere independent of the mailbox, and play the saved file before making the service change.
Will your voicemails transfer to a new carrier?
Do not assume they will. Visual voicemail is a carrier- and app-controlled mailbox, not a portable archive tied permanently to your phone number. The new provider may have no way to read the previous provider’s stored recordings. Visible’s help documentation states: “If you are joining visible from or moving to another carrier we cannot transfer old voicemail messages to or from other carriers.” You can read that policy at Visible’s voicemail feature page.

Retention can also change when you alter service. Apple says, “Messages are saved until you delete them (or until your carrier erases them, if they’re not stored in iCloud).” Carrier erasure and the effect of changing a SIM can vary by country or region, as Apple explains in its iPhone voicemail guide. A voicemail list that is still visible today is therefore not proof that the recording will remain available after porting.

The safe assumption is simple: export the messages yourself while the old app and mailbox still work. Ask the current carrier whether it has a specific deletion date, but treat a verbal assurance that messages will “stay on the line” as different from a confirmed transfer to another carrier.

The save-before-you-switch checklist
- Make an inventory. Listen through the mailbox and mark messages that contain medical, legal, financial, family, work, travel, or other information you may need. Do not spend time exporting obvious spam unless you need it for a record.
- Check the carrier’s retention notice. Read recent texts, email, and account notices for a deletion date. Cricket, for example, tells customers to save current messages before the deletion date stated in its text messages. Its instructions are at Cricket’s visual voicemail support page.
- Export from the old device. Use the iPhone Phone app, the Google Phone app, or the carrier’s visual voicemail app. The exact button can be labelled Share, Send to, or appear under a three-dot menu.
- Choose a destination outside the voicemail inbox. Save the audio to Files, email it to yourself, send it to a private cloud folder, or use another storage location you control. A second copy in a different location is useful for irreplaceable recordings.
- Open the exported file. Play it from the destination, not from the voicemail screen. Check that the voice is audible, the recording is complete, and the file is attached rather than merely represented by a link back to the old app.
- Label the copy. Include the caller or subject and the date in the filename or note, such as
2026-10-14-doctor-appointment.m4a. Keep any related transcription or context with the audio. - Finish before the service change. Porting, cancellation, a SIM replacement, or turning off visual voicemail can remove the easiest route back to the old mailbox. If the app stops working, use the dial-in procedure described below.
The phone, its built-in sharing controls, and ordinary email or cloud storage are sufficient. You do not need a special cable, adapter, replacement phone, or paid recording accessory for the documented workflows.
Save visual voicemails on an iPhone
Export one message from the current Phone app
- Open Phone.
- Open Voicemail. In some current layouts, voicemail is reached through Calls and a Voicemails filter rather than a separate bottom tab.
- Tap the message you need.
- Tap Share.
- Choose a destination offered on your phone, such as Save to Files, Voice Memos, Notes, email, Messages, or AirDrop.
- Complete the destination’s save or send action, then open the resulting audio outside the Phone app.
Apple documents this sharing workflow in its iPhone User Guide. The available destinations can differ with installed apps, account settings, carrier implementation, and iOS version. If Share is not visible, open the message’s details or more-actions control and look for the same action there.
What iCloud and a SIM change do—and do not—guarantee
Apple’s statement about carrier erasure applies to messages that are not stored in iCloud; it is not a promise that a different carrier will import your mailbox. Apple also notes that messages may be deleted when the SIM changes in some places. Because those behaviors vary by region and carrier, an iCloud or on-device listing should be treated as a convenience, not as your only archive. The independent file you created with Share is the copy to verify.

If the iPhone offers no save destination
- Try the message’s Share sheet again after waiting for the audio to load over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Install or enable a destination you already trust, such as Files, Notes, or an email account, then repeat the export.
- Use the dial-in mailbox before service ends if the visual interface remains unavailable. The carrier may provide a way to replay or forward the message, but keypad commands are carrier-specific.
Save visual voicemails on Android
Google Phone app workflow
- Open the Phone app and go to its Voicemail tab, if your operator and region support visual voicemail there.
- Select or expand the message.
- Tap Send to or open the three-dot menu and choose the sharing action.
- Select text, email, a cloud-storage app, or another destination shown on your device.
- Open the resulting attachment and play it from that destination.
Google’s exact instruction is: “To share the voicemail audio recording, expand the voicemail. Then tap Send to and tap the app that you want to use.” The full instructions are in Google Phone app Help. Menu names and placement can differ by Android version, handset, operator app, and installed sharing apps.

Carrier visual voicemail app workflow
If your carrier supplies a separate visual voicemail app, open that app rather than assuming the Google Phone tab contains the mailbox. Select the recording, expand it if necessary, and look for Share, Send to, Save, or a three-dot menu. Cricket’s documentation describes carrier-specific visual voicemail behavior and destinations; its page is at Cricket’s visual voicemail support page. On some Android services, an exported recording can be sent as an attachment to email or saved to a cloud folder such as Google Drive.
Android support and the effect of disabling visual voicemail
Google says visual voicemail support varies by operator and country or region. Your phone can therefore show a voicemail tab on one service and not on another. Google also warns that turning visual voicemail off deletes recordings from the Phone app, even if the operator might retain its own copy. Export first; do not use the switch as a test of whether the mailbox is safely backed up. Availability details are maintained in Google Phone app Help.

These examples show why a carrier’s statement about its own mailbox cannot be generalized to a port between unrelated providers. The only portable object in this process is the audio file you successfully save and verify.

Save to Files or local storage
Files gives you a copy that is separate from the Phone app. Create a clearly named folder, save each recording, and open it from that folder. If the phone is about to be erased or traded in, copy the folder to a computer or another storage location before handing over the device.

Email or messaging
Email is convenient for a small number of messages and leaves a dated message with an audio attachment. Confirm that the attachment is present and downloadable; a voicemail preview or a link that requires the old app is not an export. Messaging can work similarly, but check that the recipient account or conversation will remain accessible.
Cloud storage
A private cloud folder is useful when you need access from more than one device. Upload the actual audio attachment, not a shortcut to the carrier mailbox, and verify the file by opening it from the cloud service. Android carrier instructions may list cloud destinations; Visible specifically describes sending Android messages as attachments, including to Google Drive, in its support material at Visible Help Center.
Keep two copies for irreplaceable messages
For a message that would be difficult to replace, retain two independent copies—for example, one in Files and one in a private cloud folder. Use access controls appropriate to the content, especially when a recording contains health, financial, employment, or legal information.

Verify that an export is really usable
- Play from outside the voicemail app. Close Phone or the carrier app and open the attachment from Files, email, or cloud storage.
- Check the full duration. Scrub near the beginning, middle, and end to catch a truncated transfer.
- Check intelligibility. Confirm that speech is audible and that the export did not save only a transcription.
- Check offline access when appropriate. Temporarily use the destination’s offline option or open the downloaded file without the old SIM, if your storage service allows it.
- Keep context. Record the caller, date, and reason for keeping the message in the filename or an adjacent note.
Do not delete the original from the voicemail inbox until this check succeeds and the destination copy is in the location you intend to keep.

If visual voicemail stops working
Try the normal mailbox call first
On iPhone, tap Voicemail and follow the spoken instructions if the visual list cannot load. Apple also documents calling your own number from another phone, pressing the carrier-dependent * or # key to bypass the greeting, and entering the voicemail password. The exact key and prompts depend on the carrier; see Apple’s instructions.
Google Fi documents a similar fallback: call your own number and enter the voicemail PIN when prompted. Its service instructions are at Google Fi Help. Other carriers use different keys, PIN prompts, and menu wording.
Use the fallback before porting or cancellation
- From the old phone, dial the voicemail access number or your own number as the carrier instructs.
- Enter the voicemail password or PIN.
- Listen for options to replay, save, forward, or send a message. Write down the menu choices if you must process many recordings.
- Record the message only through a method permitted by the carrier and local law if no audio-export option exists, and keep the resulting file in an independent location.
Because keypad commands are not standardized, contact the old carrier for the exact access number and key sequence before the line is disconnected.
A practical switching timeline
Several days before the switch
- Identify the messages worth preserving and read any carrier deletion notice.
- Confirm the voicemail PIN while the old account is active.
- Export a test message and verify that the file opens from its destination.
The day before porting
- Export the remaining important recordings in batches small enough to verify.
- Make the second copy for irreplaceable audio.
- Check that filenames and notes identify the recordings without exposing unnecessary personal information.
Immediately before cancellation, port completion, or SIM replacement
- Open the destination folder and play a sample from each batch.
- Confirm that the old voicemail PIN and dial-in route are still known.
- Do not disable visual voicemail until the exports are verified.
After the new service is active
Test incoming calls and the new voicemail separately. The old audio files should remain in your chosen storage; do not expect them to appear in the new carrier’s visual voicemail list. Keep the old files until you have decided how long they must be retained.
Troubleshooting common failures
The message has no Share or Send to button
Open the message fully, check the three-dot or more-actions menu, and try the carrier’s dedicated voicemail app instead of the system Phone app. If neither interface offers an export, dial into the mailbox while the old service is active and ask the carrier whether that mailbox type supports saving. Cricket’s documentation specifically distinguishes mailbox types whose messages may not be savable to the phone, so the absence of a button can be a service limitation rather than a hidden setting.
The saved file will not play
Download it again from the destination, try the phone’s built-in audio player, and compare the file size and duration with the original. If it remains unusable, repeat the export to a different destination before deleting the voicemail. A playable attachment in email or cloud storage is preferable to a shortcut that opens only while the old service is authenticated.
The app shows the message but export fails
Use a stable connection, wait for the recording to finish loading, and retry one message at a time. Check available storage and the permissions of the destination app. If the service has announced a deletion date, prioritize the most important messages and use dial-in access rather than waiting for the app to recover.
The voicemail disappeared after a SIM or service change
Check the independent destinations immediately, then try the old mailbox from another phone if the old number still answers. Apple documents that SIM-change deletion can occur in some places, and Google warns that disabling visual voicemail can remove recordings from its Phone app. If no verified export exists, ask the former carrier whether its mailbox still retains a copy; neither the old nor new carrier is required by these examples to recreate an unavailable visual list.
What the exact steps depend on
Menu labels, supported destinations, retention periods, mailbox limits, and dial-in commands can change with the carrier, handset, operating-system version, account type, and country or region. Google explicitly says operator and regional support varies; Apple notes regional differences for carrier erasure and SIM changes. Check the current instructions for your exact line immediately before switching, but complete the export while the old visual voicemail interface is still available.
