When Chrome’s context menu is disabled, first determine whether the page is blocking the menu or whether a transparent layer, canvas, or other element is covering the actual image. Try Chrome’s native Save Image As command, then use DevTools to locate the image resource if the menu is intercepted. A right-click-restoring extension can help with simple JavaScript blocking, while a screenshot is only a last-resort copy of what is displayed.
What “save images Chrome right click disabled” usually means
Chrome normally saves a picture through the image context menu: place the pointer over the picture, right-click, and select Save Image As. Google Chrome Help describes this as: “Images: Right-click on the image and choose Save Image As.” If that command does not appear, the browser is not necessarily refusing to download the file. The page may be catching the contextmenu event with JavaScript, placing an invisible element above the picture, drawing the visual inside a canvas, or showing a CSS background instead of a conventional image element.

The distinction matters because each case needs a different remedy. An extension that re-enables the browser menu may solve event interception but cannot turn a canvas drawing into an original image file. DevTools can reveal an image URL hidden behind an overlay, but it cannot grant permission to reuse copyrighted artwork. A screenshot captures pixels on your screen and normally loses the source file’s resolution, metadata, and original format.
How do I save an image when right-click is disabled in Chrome?
- Move directly over the visible picture. Avoid captions, buttons, empty margins, and transparent controls. If the pointer is over page text or a link, Chrome will show a different context menu.
- Try the native menu. Right-click (or use the equivalent secondary-click gesture) and look for Save Image As. Choose a local folder, keep the offered filename unless you have a reason to change it, and confirm the extension matches the downloaded format.
- Check what Chrome identifies. A genuine image element usually offers image-specific commands such as opening the picture in a new tab or saving it. If only link or text commands appear, an overlay or another element is receiving the click.
- Try an alternate browser gesture. Opening the apparent image in a new tab can bypass a page’s custom click handler. If the new tab displays the file itself, use the normal save command there.
- If the menu is still blocked, identify the blocking method. Continue with the extension, DevTools, or screenshot paths below rather than repeatedly clicking the same protected area.
Do not confuse a missing download control with a browser failure. Google’s download guidance notes that a site or content owner can disable downloading, particularly for hosted video. The same principle applies to images: technical workarounds may expose a resource, but they do not change the site’s terms or the creator’s rights.

Diagnose the page before choosing a workaround
JavaScript is suppressing the context menu
Some pages listen for the right-button event and cancel it, sometimes displaying a “copying is disabled” message. The Allow Right-Click Chrome Web Store listing describes this class of behavior as sites that disable the right mouse button or block text selection. Its listing says the extension can restore the context menu, enable text selection, and allow image saving, with changes applied from its toolbar control without reloading the page.
Treat that extension as an optional third-party tool, not as a Chrome feature. Before installing, inspect the current publisher identity, requested permissions, privacy disclosure, user feedback, and update history. Enable it only on pages where you need it, and disable or remove it afterward if you do not use it. A tool that can alter page behavior may have access to content on the sites where it is enabled.
A transparent overlay is covering the picture
Designers sometimes place a transparent GIF, div, or link over an image. You see the picture, but Chrome receives the click on the covering element, so Save Image As is missing. The open-source right-click-save-image project documents this pattern, including pages where right-click does nothing because a transparent layer sits above the visual. In this situation, restoring the context menu alone may only save the overlay or open its link; inspect the page to find the underlying resource.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe visual is drawn in a canvas or supplied as a background
A canvas can display pixels without exposing a normal <img> element. Similarly, a CSS background image may belong to a container rather than the visible object. Chrome’s context-menu API is context-sensitive: menu items can be associated with image, video, or audio contexts and can be enabled or disabled. If the browser does not classify the target as an image, image-specific commands will not be offered even though you can see a picture.

Method 1: use a right-click-restoring extension for simple blocking
This method is appropriate when the page has a real image but JavaScript cancels the context menu.
- Open the Chrome Web Store and search for the listing named Allow Right-Click.
- Read the current permissions, publisher information, privacy policy, and reviews. Do not install a similarly named copy solely because its icon looks familiar.
- Select Add to Chrome only if the access requested is acceptable to you, then confirm Chrome’s installation dialog.
- Open the Extensions menu in Chrome’s toolbar, pin or select the extension, and turn its protection override on for the current page according to the listing’s controls.
- Return to the picture and try the native context menu again. If Save Image As appears, save the file normally.
- Turn the extension off when finished, especially on pages containing private accounts, payment information, or sensitive documents.
The listing says its changes apply from the toolbar without reloading. If the menu remains unavailable, the page may be using an overlay, canvas, or another technique that this type of extension cannot address. Do not keep escalating permissions or installing multiple extensions when DevTools can identify the resource directly.
Method 2: locate the original resource with DevTools
DevTools is the most useful option when an overlay, proxy element, or nonstandard rendering prevents Chrome from recognizing the image. The goal is to find the URL that delivered the asset, not to defeat an access control system.
Inspect a normal image or an overlay
- Open Chrome DevTools with
Ctrl+Shift+Ion Windows or Linux, orCommand+Option+Ion macOS. You can also open the browser menu, choose More tools, and then Developer tools. - Choose the element picker (the pointer-in-a-box icon) and click the visible picture.
- In the Elements panel, look for an
<img>element and inspect itssrc, srcset, or related attributes. Asrcsetmay contain several resolutions; select the largest appropriate resource rather than a small thumbnail. - If the selected element is a transparent div, link, or GIF, move through nearby parent and sibling elements until you find the image-bearing element underneath. The highlighted box should correspond to the actual picture’s dimensions.
- Right-click the relevant URL in DevTools and choose the option to open it in a new tab, or copy the address into a new tab manually. Once the file is displayed by itself, use Chrome’s ordinary save command.
Find images loaded through CSS or the network
- Open the Network panel and reload the page while DevTools is open. Use the resource-type filter for Img when available.
- Look for requests whose names or previews match the picture. Check the response headers and dimensions before saving; thumbnails, tracking pixels, and interface icons can appear alongside the target.
- Open the request in a new tab or copy its exact request URL. If the URL is a temporary, signed, or session-bound address, it may stop working later; save the file while the request is valid and do not publish the private URL.
- For CSS backgrounds, inspect the Styles or Computed pane for a
background-imagevalue, then open the referenced resource.
Some applications assemble an image from multiple requests or draw it into a canvas after loading separate data. In those cases, the network panel may show source tiles or data rather than one original file. Saving a displayed canvas through application-provided controls, where available, is preferable to guessing at internal requests.

Method 3: use the documented open-source approach cautiously
The open-source right-click-save-image project specifically targets pages where right-click is disabled or a transparent GIF prevents the native image menu. Its documentation describes loading an unpacked extension through chrome://extensions. This is a developer-oriented option, not a one-click Chrome setting.
- Obtain the project from its legitimate public repository and review the source, license, release history, and issues before running anything.
- In Chrome, open
chrome://extensionsand enable Developer mode. - Choose Load unpacked and select the project directory, following the project’s own instructions for the correct folder.
- Test it on a non-sensitive page. Confirm that the element it saves is the intended image and that the extension is not sending page data elsewhere.
- Disable Developer mode or remove the unpacked extension when you no longer need it.
Because unpacked extensions can read or modify pages according to their manifest, inspect permissions just as you would for a Web Store extension. Never install code copied from an unknown download site merely because its name resembles the documented project.
Method 4: save a screenshot only when the source file is unavailable
A screenshot is a legitimate way to record what your screen displays when no downloadable source is exposed and you have permission to make a copy. It is not equivalent to retrieving the original image. The result is limited by your display scale and viewport, may include interface elements, and usually omits the source file’s metadata and full resolution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Maximize the image at its largest available display size before capturing.
- Use Chrome’s built-in screenshot workflow or your operating system’s capture tool, then crop only as needed.
- Keep the capture for personal reference unless the image’s license or the owner expressly permits redistribution.
- Do not describe a screenshot as the original file when its provenance or quality matters.
When the downloaded file is WebP or AVIF
Modern sites often deliver WebP or AVIF even when the visible picture resembles a JPEG or PNG. That is a format issue, not evidence that the right-click workaround failed. First save the file you actually received. Then, if your editor or destination requires PNG or JPG, use a trusted local converter or reputable browser-based converter.

- Conversion can change compression, color handling, transparency, animation, and metadata.
- Converting to PNG or JPG does not increase the source resolution or restore details removed by a thumbnail.
- A converter does not provide permission to reuse the image and cannot bypass a disabled download control.
- Keep the original WebP or AVIF alongside the converted copy when you may need to verify provenance.
Compare the available methods
| Method | Does the page expose a real image element? | Original resolution and format | Extension permissions and trust | Permission to reuse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native Save Image As | Yes, or Chrome can identify the target as an image | Usually preserves the file delivered by the site, including WebP or AVIF | No extension required | Still governed by the image license and site terms |
| Right-click-restoring extension | Usually yes; helps when JavaScript intercepts the menu | Can preserve the delivered file, but cannot create an original resource where none is exposed | Review publisher, permissions, privacy policy, and updates | Technical access does not grant reuse rights |
| DevTools Elements or Network | Not necessarily; useful for overlays, CSS backgrounds, and proxy elements | Best chance of finding the requested resolution and actual format; verify that it is not a thumbnail | No added extension if you use built-in DevTools | URL discovery does not change copyright or contractual limits |
| Screenshot | No source file required | Only the displayed pixels; not equivalent to the original resolution or format | No extension required | Make and share only within the owner’s permission or applicable license |
Why common attempts fail
“Save Image As is missing” even after enabling an extension
The click may still be landing on a transparent overlay, or the picture may be a canvas or CSS background. Use the element picker and Network panel instead of repeatedly toggling the extension.
The saved file is a tiny thumbnail
Sites often load a small preview first and request a larger image only after a click or zoom. Compare the image dimensions in DevTools and inspect srcset candidates or higher-resolution network requests. Do not assume a filename containing “large” is evidence; verify the actual dimensions.
The URL opens a login page or an error
The resource may require your current session, use a short-lived signature, or be protected by an access policy. Save it while authenticated if the site permits downloading, and avoid sharing a session-bound URL. If the owner intentionally restricts access, stop rather than attempting to bypass authentication.

The extension works on one site but not another
Content Security Policy, frames, canvas rendering, service workers, and cross-origin requests can change how a page delivers images. An extension that cancels a JavaScript handler cannot automatically read pixels from every cross-origin canvas. Switch to the site’s own download control or request permission from the owner.

How can I get the image URL when the page blocks right-click?
Use DevTools rather than the context menu: open Elements, select the visible picture, and inspect src, srcset, or a CSS background-image. If no useful URL appears, reload with the Network panel filtered to image requests and identify the request whose preview and dimensions match the target. Open that request in a new tab and save it only if the site makes the resource available to you. A canvas may have no standalone image URL; in that case, look for an official export or download command instead of treating internal data as an unrestricted source.
Copyright, terms, and responsible use
Saving a file and having permission to reuse it are separate questions. The Chrome Web Store guidance for right-click tools tells users to respect copyright and website terms. Check the image’s license, attribution requirements, privacy expectations, and any restrictions on commercial use before posting, editing, or distributing it. For stock, news, user-uploaded, or personal images, the safest choices are an explicit download button, a clearly stated license, or written permission from the rights holder.
If the page blocks downloads because the owner intends to restrict copying, consider contacting the owner or using a licensed alternative. Technical methods in this guide explain how Chrome identifies resources; they are not authorization to defeat paywalls, access controls, watermark protections, or account restrictions.
