Choose the destination using Chrome’s download settings. Install an image-downloader extension when you need to find, filter, rename, or save many images from one page.
Save a single image without an extension
Open the page in Chrome, locate the image, and open its context menu. Depending on the site, browser version, operating system, and whether the image is displayed as a link or background, the command may be labeled differently. Choose the available option that saves or downloads the image, then confirm the file appears in Chrome’s Downloads page.
Some sites place a transparent element over an image, show it through a gallery viewer, or use a CSS background instead of a normal image element. In those cases, open the image in the site’s viewer first, look for its own download control, or use an extension that can inspect the page for image URLs. Do not treat a failed context-menu save as permission to bypass an access control.
Choose where Chrome saves files
- Open Chrome’s Settings and find the Downloads section.
- Set a default download location, or enable Ask where to save each file before downloading if you want to choose a folder every time.
- Open Chrome’s Downloads page to find the saved file and its location.
Removing an entry from the Downloads page removes it from Chrome’s download history; it does not delete the file from your computer. If the image is missing, check the folder shown in the download entry, your operating system’s recent files, and whether security software moved the file.

When a Chrome extension is worth using
An extension is useful when a page contains many images and you need to discover the underlying files rather than save them one at a time. Typical reasons include:
- finding images that are below the fold or loaded lazily;
- filtering by dimensions, file size, or URL;
- removing duplicate image URLs;
- renaming files or placing them in a subfolder;
- starting several downloads in the background; and
- opening an individual image for inspection before saving it.
For a single visible image, an extension adds installation, permissions, and maintenance overhead. Start with Chrome’s built-in workflow unless the page or the number of files makes manual saving impractical.
Use an image-downloader extension
The Chrome Web Store listing for Image Downloader describes a workflow for browsing images on the active webpage, filtering by size, dimensions, or URL, removing duplicates, downloading or viewing one image, saving to a subfolder, renaming downloads, and downloading in the background. The listing also says the extension requests access to webpage content when its popup is activated. Treat those as the listing’s stated features and requirements; inspect the current listing because availability, permissions, and behavior can change.
Install and activate it carefully
- Open the current Image Downloader listing in the Chrome Web Store and review the publisher information, update history, requested permissions, and privacy explanation.
- Select Add to Chrome only if the listed access matches your task.
- Open Chrome’s Extensions menu, pin the extension if desired, and activate it on the tab containing the images.
- Use its filters to narrow results by dimensions, size, or URL. Remove duplicates before selecting files.
- Preview an image when you need to confirm that it is the original rather than a thumbnail or tracking asset.
- Choose the download, rename, and subfolder options, then verify the files in Chrome’s Downloads page.
Exact button names and layouts can change. If the extension cannot find an image, try the site’s own viewer, scroll to trigger lazy loading, or reload the tab before activating the extension.
Set the extension’s site access to the narrowest useful scope
Chrome provides controls for whether an extension can act only when you select it on the current tab, automatically on the current site, or automatically on all sites. Open the Extensions menu, select the extension’s details, and find its site-access control. Prefer current-tab or one-site access unless your workflow genuinely needs broader coverage.

“Access to data on websites” can allow an extension to read, request, or modify data on those pages. A warning describes possible access; Google says the warning alone does not mean the extension is dangerous. It does mean you should understand why the feature needs that access and whether you are comfortable granting it.
Chrome’s developer documentation describes host permissions as matching URL patterns that can enable capabilities such as injecting a content script. Chrome Web Store policy guidance states: “Extensions must require only the narrowest set of permissions necessary to provide their existing services or features.” Use that principle when comparing an extension’s requested access with its actual image-saving function.
Why does an image extension need access to site data?
To list images, an extension may need to inspect the active page’s image elements, links, styles, or network-loaded resources. That explains why a downloader can request webpage access, but it does not justify unlimited access automatically. Read the permission prompt and listing, restrict access in Chrome, and disable or remove the extension when the task is complete.

- Open only the page whose images you are entitled to save.
- Activate the extension on that tab, not on every site by default.
- Filter out tiny thumbnails, icons, and tracking images using dimensions, size, or URL rules.
- Deduplicate the results and preview representative files.
- Choose a destination subfolder and a naming pattern that will not overwrite existing files.
- Start the download and watch Chrome’s download status for blocked, duplicate, or failed items.
- Open several saved files to confirm they are complete images at the expected resolution.
Large batches can trigger site rate limits, browser download protections, or a site’s terms. Slow the workflow, reduce the selection, or use the publisher’s official download facility when one exists.
Copyright, consent, and access boundaries
Save images only when you own them, have permission, or otherwise have a lawful basis to download and use them. A local copy does not grant permission to publish, sell, modify, or redistribute the image. Check the license, attribution requirements, and any terms attached to the page or asset.

Chrome Web Store policy prohibits extensions that facilitate unauthorized access to content, including unauthorized downloading of copyrighted content or media. Do not use an extension to defeat a paywall, login restriction, bot check, CAPTCHA, disabled-download control, or other technical access boundary.
What to do when saving fails
The context-menu save option is missing
The visible object may be a CSS background, canvas rendering, protected viewer, or link to another page. Use the site’s download control, open the image in a new viewer, or try an extension that lists page images. If access is restricted, stop rather than attempting to bypass it.

The extension shows thumbnails instead of originals
Filter by larger dimensions, inspect the image URL, open a candidate in a new tab, and compare its resolution with the displayed thumbnail. Lazy-loaded pages may require scrolling before all images appear.
Downloads go to the wrong folder
Change Chrome’s default download location or enable Ask where to save each file before downloading. Check the individual entry on Chrome’s Downloads page before repeating a batch.
Chrome blocks or pauses the downloads
Review Chrome’s download warning, available disk space, operating-system permissions, and the number of simultaneous downloads. Reduce the batch and retry. Do not disable security protections merely to force an unfamiliar file to download.

The extension stopped working
Chrome may disable unsupported extensions as requirements change. Check Manage extensions for a warning, then inspect the current Web Store listing for a compatible alternative. Recheck permissions after an update; a previously acceptable workflow can change when a listing or permission request changes.

Should I allow an extension on every website?
Only when its feature genuinely requires it. Current-tab or single-site access is usually a narrower choice.
