Record the account handle and profile URL, display name, platform, visible date and time, post ID or permalink, and your capture time in UTC. Keep the full-page image as the primary record, add a second viewport image showing the URL when needed, and preserve a PDF or HTML copy, notes, hashes and the platform’s report receipt. A screenshot proves what the page rendered at that moment; it does not by itself prove who authored the post, that an account is genuine, or that media was AI-generated.
Why preservation must happen before reporting
Reporting can make a post, account or reply disappear from your view. The Internet Society recommends copying the link and taking a screenshot before reporting, then opening the post itself and reporting the account when it impersonates a person or organisation. Treat the screenshot as one part of an evidence package rather than as a complete proof.

The scale of the problem makes a repeatable record worthwhile. The Federal Trade Commission reported $2.95 billion in consumer losses from impersonation scams during 2024, in a 2025 release reporting that year’s data. FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine said, “Our report emphasizes that nobody should treat AI as the solution to the spread of harmful online content.”

Step 1: Open and identify the original post
- Open the post itself. Do not rely only on a feed card, search result or notification preview. Open the permalink so the page contains the post’s own context.
- Copy the exact URL. Paste it into a notes file immediately. If the platform offers a “Copy link” or “Copy permalink” command, use that rather than retyping.
- Record identity fields. Note the account handle, profile URL, display name, profile image description, platform name, visible date and time, and any post ID.
- Record your access conditions. Note whether you were logged in, the account or workspace used, locale, timezone, device and operating system. Private or geo-targeted visibility can make another person’s later reproduction impossible.
- Do not interact unnecessarily. Avoid liking, replying, sharing or following before capture; those actions can change the visible engagement context.
Step 2: Capture the complete rendered page in Firefox
Use the Developer Tools screenshot command
- Open the original post in Firefox and wait until the text, attached media and relevant replies have rendered.
- Open Developer Tools. If the screenshot button is not visible in the toolbar, open the Developer Tools settings and enable the screenshot control.
- Choose “Take a screenshot of the entire page.” Firefox saves the image to your Downloads folder.
Use the Web Console when the button is unavailable
Open the Web Console, enter :screenshot --fullpage, and press Enter. Firefox writes the resulting full-page image to Downloads with a date-and-time-based filename. Keep that original file unchanged.

What the full-page image must show
- Account display name, handle and profile image.
- Platform branding and the post’s complete text.
- Attached image, video thumbnail or other media as rendered.
- Visible timestamp, engagement counts and reply context when those elements are relevant.
- Any warning label, edited indicator, quoted-post relationship or impersonation clue.
A full-page capture may place the browser address bar outside the image. Record the exact URL separately, and take a second visible-viewport capture with the address bar and the post’s top section when the URL-to-content relationship could be challenged. The viewport image supplements; it does not replace, the full-page image.
Step 3: Preserve companion records
Keep records that let another reviewer understand how the image was made. Save a print-to-PDF file or self-contained page/HTML copy when the platform and browser permit it. Retain response headers or a capture log if your tools expose them.
Minimum capture log
- Capture time in UTC (include seconds when possible).
- Browser name and version, device and operating-system version.
- Login state, account used, locale and timezone.
- Original post URL, profile URL and post ID.
- Whether replies, media, warnings or expandable sections were opened.
- Any filters, content settings, ad blockers or network conditions that could affect rendering.
- Filenames and cryptographic hashes for every saved artifact.
The U.S. Department of State’s social-media records guidance advises copying or archiving records with related records unless a records-management application manages their lifecycle. Keep the URL, notes, image, PDF or HTML and report receipt together in one evidence folder.

Create a SHA-256 manifest
Hash the PNG or JPEG, PDF or HTML copy and notes file after capture. On macOS or Linux, a typical command is:
sha256sum post-fullpage.png post.pdf capture-notes.txt > SHA256SUMS.txtOn Windows PowerShell, use:

Get-FileHash .capture-notes.txt -Algorithm SHA256Store the manifest with the files and verify it after copying. Keep an untouched evidence master and do all cropping, highlighting or redaction on a working copy. NIST distinguishes preservation of digital objects from preservation of physical storage media; a USB flash drive can provide a redundant copy, but storage alone does not prove authorship or truth.
Add independent time evidence when the stakes justify it
If someone may dispute when the capture occurred, preserve a trusted timestamp or another independent time record for the manifest. NIST explains that trusted timestamping can provide assurance about when a digitally signed message was generated. A timestamp supports the timing of your file; it does not authenticate the account or establish that the post’s claims are true.

Step 5: Report and retain the platform receipt
- Use the platform category that best matches the conduct: impersonation, manipulated media, scam or misinformation.
- Report the post and, where available, the impersonating account separately.
- Save the confirmation number, confirmation screen or email with the evidence folder.
- Write down the date and time of the report and any follow-up reference.
Do not edit the evidence master after reporting. If the platform removes the post, the URL and report receipt remain part of the trail another reviewer can inspect.

NISTIR 8387 describes digital evidence as having preservation problems distinct from traditional evidence. A reviewer should receive the screenshot together with the URL, related files, notes, hashes and reporting receipt.
Choosing a capture method

Use more than one method when the page is dynamic, the URL is not visible in the image, or a reviewer will need to inspect expanded replies and media separately.
Dynamic pages, private posts and other edge cases
Lazy-loaded media or replies
Scroll through the post slowly and wait for images, videos, replies and warning labels to render before using the full-page command. If content appears only after an interaction, capture the expanded state and record what you opened.
Cookie banners, newsletters and chat overlays
Dismiss overlays only when doing so does not change the post or violate the platform’s rules. Record that a banner was dismissed. If an overlay obscures evidence, take a viewport image before dismissal and another after the page is readable.
Login-gated, private or geo-targeted content
Record the login state and account used. A later reviewer may not have access. Private, disappearing or geo-targeted content may require a platform export, screen recording or a legal-process route beyond this basic workflow.
Very long pages
Keep the original full-page file even if it is unwieldy. Create a clearly labelled working copy for excerpts, and include the manifest hash of the untouched original.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot contains only the visible viewport
Use Firefox’s Developer Tools command “Take a screenshot of the entire page” or run :screenshot --fullpage in the Web Console. A normal operating-system screenshot will not capture content below the fold.
Images or replies are missing
Wait for loading to finish, scroll through lazy-loaded sections, expand the relevant replies, then capture again. Record the delay and expanded sections in your notes.
The URL is not visible in the image
Keep the copied URL in the notes file and take a second viewport capture that includes the address bar. Do not crop the address-bar image before hashing the master.
The page changes between captures
Record each capture time, browser state and URL. Preserve every original file rather than overwriting one image; explain which capture is primary and why.
The platform removes the post before you finish
Keep the first URL copy, any notification or email, the partial capture and the report receipt. If a complete capture is impossible, state exactly what was and was not visible instead of filling gaps from memory.
Hashes do not match after copying
Do not delete the original. Re-run verification against the untouched source, identify which copy changed, and create a new manifest for any deliberately converted or redacted working copy.

Can a screenshot prove that a post is illegal?
No. It records appearance and timing, while illegality and admissibility depend on the facts, jurisdiction and applicable procedure. Provide the complete evidence package to the platform, investigator or lawyer handling the matter.

Should I publish the screenshot while reporting?
Not automatically. Publicly reposting an impersonation can amplify it or expose private information. Share the preserved package only with the platform, investigators, affected person or adviser who needs it.
What if I need evidence from several URLs?
