PS1 classics on PS5 come through an eligible PlayStation Store purchase or a PlayStation Plus entitlement. Depending on your country, plan, and the individual title, you can download a game to the console or stream it. A downloaded game’s save resides in PS5 console storage; a streamed game’s progress is held in PlayStation streaming storage. To move progress between those versions, use PlayStation Plus cloud storage as the bridge.
What you need before downloading a PS1 classic
Three checks determine whether a particular classic can be played on your PS5:

- The correct account: Sign in to the PSN account that bought the game or holds the PlayStation Plus entitlement.
- An eligible access method: The title must be an eligible purchase or currently included with a PlayStation Plus catalog available in your market.
- A supported delivery option: Sony decides separately whether a title can be downloaded, streamed, or both. Catalog membership and streaming support vary by country and by game.
PlayStation Plus catalog access is temporary. If a catalog title leaves the service, you lose access through the subscription unless you purchase the game separately. A purchase remains tied to the purchasing PSN account, subject to the normal PlayStation Store license terms.

Sony’s current plan comparison places the Classics Catalog and cloud storage under PlayStation Plus Premium. In markets where Sony sells Deluxe instead of Premium, Deluxe is the comparable top tier, but streaming availability depends on the market. Sony’s service guide also says original PlayStation games can be downloadable on Extra and Premium/Deluxe where offered. That wording does not make every PS1 title available on every tier, so check the listing for the exact game.

The wording shown on the game’s product page is decisive. A title may display Download, Stream, both options, or only one of them.
How to find and download a PS1 classic on PS5
- Sign in: Use the PSN account that owns the purchase or has the required PlayStation Plus plan.
- Open the library: From the PS5 home screen, open Game Library. Sony says this library includes PS5 and PS4 games you purchased or played, including games accessed through PlayStation Plus.
- Filter or search: Locate the eligible PS1 classic. If it is missing, verify the account, the subscription status, and the country set for the account; catalog listings are regional.
- Open the game card: Select the classic and inspect the actions Sony makes available for that title.
- Choose Download or Stream: Select Download to install a local copy. Select Stream when that option is offered and you want to play from PlayStation’s servers without installing the game.
- Wait for installation: A download appears in the PS5 downloads queue. You can launch the game when installation finishes and the title is ready.
If only Stream appears, the game is not currently offered as a local download for your account and market. If only Download appears, streaming is not supported for that listing. Neither result indicates a problem with the console.
Where PS1 classic saves are stored
The save location is determined by how the game is being delivered, not by the age of the original PlayStation title.

Use the classic’s own save menu during play, just as you would with any game. The important distinction is that a streamed session does not write that progress to the PS5’s local game-save area.
How to move a save between streamed and downloaded versions
Downloaded and streamed versions do not automatically exchange saves. The reliable method is to copy the streamed progress to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, then download that file to the console storage used by the downloaded game. The reverse direction uses the same cloud bridge.
Move a streamed save to a downloaded copy
- Start the streamed classic and confirm that the latest progress is visible.
- Press the PS button to open the control center.
- Select the PlayStation Plus card, then choose Manage Saved Data.
- Follow the on-screen copy instructions to place the streamed save in PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
- Exit the stream and install or start the downloaded version.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), matching the format shown for the title.
- Select Download or Delete from Cloud Storage > Download to Console Storage.
- Launch the downloaded classic and check its load-game menu. If it shows the earlier progress, the transfer is complete.
Do not overwrite a newer local save with an older cloud copy. Check the date and time of each version before downloading, and make a backup copy of any progress you cannot replace.

Move a downloaded save into streaming storage
- Close the downloaded game after making a current in-game save.
- Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
- Choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage, then select the classic’s save.
- Start the streamed version while signed in to the same PSN account.
- Press the PS button, open the PlayStation Plus card, select Manage Saved Data, and follow the copy instructions.
- Load the game and verify the transferred slot before continuing.
The PS4-format option matters because a PS4-format save played on PS5 is handled differently from a native PS5 save. Sony says PS4-format saves on PS5 are automatically uploaded when Auto-Sync Saved Data is enabled, but they still must be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage when you need to restore them.

Cloud-save settings and automatic synchronization
To review the automatic setting, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4) > Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data. With synchronization enabled, PS5 saves can use the automatic cloud process. Sony describes PS5 synchronization as keeping the console and cloud versions aligned to the most recent data.
Automatic synchronization is convenient, but it is not a substitute for checking timestamps before a manual transfer. If two devices have played the same classic at different times, identify which save is newer before downloading or uploading.

Playing downloaded PS1 classics offline
Sony states that downloaded games from the Extra and Premium/Deluxe catalogs can be played offline after the console has validated the membership. The PS5 must connect to PSN at least once every seven days for that validation. If the check is overdue, a catalog game can stop launching offline until the console reconnects.
Streaming is different: the game runs on PlayStation’s servers, so an internet connection is required for the entire session. A weak or interrupted connection can prevent the stream from starting or interrupt active play. Download the title in advance when you expect to play without reliable internet.

Managing local and cloud saves
Check or remove a local save
Use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4) and the console-storage management option. Removing a local save does not uninstall the game. Preserve the file in cloud storage first if you may need it later.
Download or delete a cloud save
For cloud files, use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5/PS4) > Download or Delete from Cloud Storage. Select Download to Console Storage to restore a file, or Delete to remove it from the cloud.
Know the cloud-storage limits
Sony’s current support documentation lists up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data. The PS4 allocation is limited to 1,000 saved-data files. These limits apply to saved data, not to the installed game files themselves. Cloud storage can free console space by preserving saves after you remove local copies, but deleting both copies removes the recovery option.
Troubleshooting common PS1 classic save and download problems

A practical workflow for switching between stream and download
If you are starting with streaming
- Stream the game and save normally.
- Before installing the local copy, copy the streamed progress through PS button > PlayStation Plus card > Manage Saved Data.
- Download the game from Game Library.
- Restore the save through the Saved Data cloud menu.
- Open the downloaded game and verify the slot before making new progress.
If you are starting with a download
- Save in the downloaded game and close it cleanly.
- Upload the save from console storage to cloud storage.
- Start the streamed version with the same account.
- Use Manage Saved Data from the PlayStation Plus card and follow the copy instructions.
- Confirm the slot in the streamed game before continuing on another device.
This sequence prevents the most common mistake: assuming that installing the other delivery type automatically exposes the existing save.
What changes when a catalog title rotates out?
Catalog access is an entitlement, not a permanent purchase. When Sony removes a title from the catalog, the downloaded files do not preserve the right to play it. Your save may remain in console or cloud storage, but launching the catalog copy requires an active entitlement. Buying the title separately, where Sony offers a purchase, is the route to continued access after removal.
