For one conversation you need immediately, open it on the web and use your browser’s Print → Save as PDF command. Use screenshots when preserving the on-screen appearance of selected messages matters more than searchability. The export is delivered by email and Character.AI currently says processing can take 3–4 weeks; its download link remains valid for seven days.
Choose the method that matches what you need
These methods preserve different things. An official export is the authoritative account-level route, while browser printing and screenshots are immediate captures of what has loaded on screen.

A PDF made from a browser can be incomplete if earlier messages have not loaded. A screenshot is also selective: it cannot include content that was off-screen, hidden, or never rendered. For important conversations, combine the official export with a checked PDF and a few screenshots.

On the Character.AI website
- Sign in to Character.AI.
- Open Profile.
- Choose Profile Settings.
- Open Account.
- Select Manage Account & Data.
- Choose Export Data and submit the request.
In the mobile app
- Open your Profile.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Legal & Privacy.
- Tap Export Data.
Plan for the delivery window
Character.AI’s Help Center says the export may take 3–4 weeks to complete. It arrives by email at the address associated with your account. When the message arrives, download the archive within the stated seven-day link window. If you miss that window, submit a new request rather than relying on an expired link.
The export is not an instant, single-conversation PDF. Treat it as your preservation copy, then create a PDF separately if you need a document that is easy to read, print or search.
Save one Character.AI conversation as a PDF
Browser printing is the practical way to make a searchable file for a single chat.
Prepare the chat before printing
- Use a desktop browser and open the conversation you want to preserve.
- Scroll upward through the chat, pausing as needed, until the earliest messages you need have loaded. Long conversations often load older messages incrementally.
- Continue down through the conversation so the complete range you intend to save is present in the page. If loading stops, wait for the messages to appear before proceeding.
- Note the chat title, character name and capture date in a separate record. These details help you identify the file later if the exported content has a different filename.
Print to PDF
- On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl+P. On macOS, press Cmd+P.
- In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF (the wording can vary slightly by browser).
- Review the preview. Check that the first page begins where expected, messages are not cut off, and the final page contains the end of the selected exchange.
- Save the file with a dated, descriptive name such as
character-ai-chat-2026-10-16.pdf.
Verify that the PDF is complete
- Check the page count in your PDF viewer.
- Search for a distinctive sentence near the beginning, middle and end of the conversation.
- Compare the last visible message in the PDF with the chat window before you close it.
- If a search fails or a section is missing, return to the chat, load more messages and print again.
Printing captures the page as rendered. It does not automatically include character settings, persona text, hidden history, or media that was not visible in the loaded conversation.

Capture a long conversation with screenshots
Screenshots are useful when exact visual appearance matters—for example, documenting a particular message, reaction, or layout. They are not a substitute for a searchable backup.
Use overlapping sections
- Open the conversation and scroll to the first section you need.
- Use your computer or phone’s built-in screenshot command.
- Scroll by less than one full screen so each image overlaps the previous one. The overlap makes the sequence understandable and helps detect missing messages.
- Repeat until you reach the end of the selected exchange.
- Store the images in a dated folder and use sortable names such as
chat-001.png,chat-002.pngand so on.
Keep the record usable
- Do not crop away timestamps, character names or message boundaries if they establish context.
- Keep the original, unedited images; make separate cropped copies for sharing.
- Record the conversation URL and capture date outside the images.
- Remember that screenshots show only what was visible. They do not preserve unloaded history, account data or hidden settings.
Combine methods for a dependable archive
For a conversation that matters, use a layered workflow rather than trusting a single file.
- Request the official export first. The multi-week processing estimate means it should be started early.
- Create the chat PDF now. Load the required messages, print the page and verify representative text.
- Add screenshots for visual context. Capture key passages or the layout that a PDF may reflow.
- Store two copies in separate locations. Keep the export/PDF in one location and the screenshot folder in another, such as a second drive or a separate cloud account.
- Use clear filenames and dates. Consistent names make it possible to find a conversation without opening every file.
What changed from the old Character.AI site?
The old or beta site has been retired. Character.AI said chats were preserved on the newer site and app, although older conversations might require manual migration. If a chat appears to be missing, check the current site and app, look for a migration prompt, and load the conversation there before printing or capturing it. Do not assume that an old bookmark alone proves the history has been lost.

The PDF stops before the beginning of the chat
The browser printed only messages that had loaded. Scroll upward farther, wait for older messages to appear, and print again. Verify the first distinctive sentence in the new file.

Messages are missing in the middle
Incremental loading or a stalled network request can leave a gap. Move through the conversation in smaller sections, wait after each scroll, and compare the PDF preview with the live chat. If necessary, save separate PDFs for sections and label them in order.
The print preview has clipped text or awkward page breaks
Try the browser’s default margins and scale first, then inspect every page in the preview. A screenshot is safer for a visually exact excerpt; retain the PDF for searchable text.

The export email has not arrived
The stated processing period is up to 3–4 weeks, so an immediate email is not expected. Check the account email’s spam or filtering folders and confirm that you requested export from the correct account. If the stated window has passed, contact Character.AI support through its current Help Center.
The download link has expired
The link is valid for seven days. Request another export rather than attempting to reuse the expired URL.
An old chat is not visible
Use the current Character.AI website or app. Because the old/beta site was retired, an older chat may need manual migration before it can be loaded and captured.
A screenshot sequence is confusing
Retake the images with a consistent viewport and a small overlap. Keep filenames numerically ordered and preserve the originals so edits do not obscure the source.
Privacy and preservation checklist
- Decide whether you need an account-wide export, one searchable conversation, or a visual excerpt.
- Load and inspect every message range before printing.
- Keep screenshots and PDFs in access-controlled storage; chats can contain personal or sensitive text.
- Make two copies in separate locations.
- Do not treat a screenshot as proof that unseen history or account settings were preserved.
- For an API capture, use only URLs and session data you are authorized to process.

Can I get one Character.AI conversation immediately from the official export?
No. The official route is an account-data request and Character.AI says processing may take 3–4 weeks. Use browser printing for an immediate single-chat PDF.
Which format is easiest to search later?
A browser-created PDF is generally more searchable than screenshots because its message text is retained as document text. Verify the PDF before deleting any source material.
Should screenshots replace the PDF?
Use them together when appearance matters. Screenshots preserve the screen layout, while a PDF is easier to search and read as a continuous document.
