How to Save and Switch Custom Tactics Quickly During an EA FC Match (FC 25 and FC 26)

The fastest match-day workflow depends on your version. In EA SPORTS FC 25, prepare named custom-tactic slots and select one from My Tactics with the directional buttons. In EA SPORTS FC 26, EA documents saving and reusing tactic codes, but the retrieved FC 26 guide does not verify the exact in-match button sequence from FC 25. Treat the directional-button instructions below as FC 25 instructions unless your FC 26 game shows the same command in its own controls screen.

What you can save, and what changes in a match

A custom tactic is a prepared team setup: a formation, tactical settings and player roles grouped under a name. The lineup is shared between the custom tactics in FC 25, so switching tactics changes the shape and instructions without creating a separate starting XI for every slot. EA says FC 25 supports up to five custom tactics, each with its own name, formation, tactical settings and player roles. See EA’s FC 25 FC IQ Deep Dive.

There are two different jobs that players often describe as “saving tactics”:

  • Match switching: choose one of the tactics already prepared for the current team and make it active while the game is running.
  • Code reuse: in FC 26, save a tactic as a code and load that code later, including in another supported game mode.

Those functions complement each other. A tactic slot is the quick control you use during a match; a saved code is a portable way to preserve or transfer a configuration.

Prepare your custom tactics before kickoff

1. Open the custom-tactics editor

From your team-management or custom-tactics screen, create a tactic or edit an existing one. Menu names can vary by mode and platform, so use the on-screen label that leads to Custom Tactics or My Tactics. The important preparation is to finish the tactic before the match rather than trying to build its formation and roles under pressure.

2. Give every tactic a short, readable name

Use names that describe the game state you intend to handle, such as Base, Chase Goal, Protect Lead, Press or Close Match. Keep the distinctive word at the beginning because the in-match list is easier to scan when names are immediately recognizable. Avoid five nearly identical names such as “Tactic 1” and “Tactic 2”; they make a fast selection error more likely.

3. Assign the formation, settings and roles

For each slot, set the formation and the tactical settings you want, then assign the player roles that belong to that plan. FC 25 treats those elements as separate properties of each custom tactic, while the lineup remains shared across the slots. In practice, that means you can prepare a more defensive shape and a more aggressive shape for the same players, but you should not expect a tactic slot to preserve a different lineup from the others.

4. Test the names and order before entering a competitive match

Open the tactic list once and verify that the name, formation and intended roles are attached to the correct slot. This simple check catches the most common fast-switching mistake: selecting the right directional entry but finding that it contains an older experiment. If you revise a tactic later, reopen the list and confirm the saved name still describes what it does.

How to switch custom tactics during an FC 25 match

EA’s FC 25 FC IQ guide documents the following in-match sequence. It uses the directional buttons (the D-pad on a standard controller), not a universal face-button command. If you remapped your controls, the physical button may differ; use the function shown in your control settings.

  1. Press Left on the directional buttons. This opens My Tactics while the match is in progress.
  2. Read the list. EA says the menu displays the tactic names and formations, with the active tactic shown at the top. Confirm the name and shape before committing to a change.
  3. Press the direction associated with the tactic you want. Select the directional entry shown for that tactic. EA describes this as requesting the change; the new setup is not necessarily active on the same frame.
  4. Return to play and allow the transition to finish. Your players move toward their new positions and roles. Do not judge the tactic from the first few seconds after requesting it.

EA’s wording is explicit about the result of an in-game activation: “If you do this in-game, your team will switch to that tactic.” The same guide also warns that a request can produce a “Tactical Change in Progress” message, meaning the new instructions have not yet taken effect.

Why a tactical switch is not instant

A requested change is a transition, not a teleport. Players have to move into the new positions and adopt the new roles, so the team may look disorganized for a short period. EA says the transition happens more quickly when the ball goes out of play or when you make the change while your team is out of play. That makes a stoppage a safer moment for a major shape change than the middle of an opponent’s attack.

Use a stoppage when the change is substantial

For a switch that changes several roles or moves players into very different zones, wait for a throw-in, goal kick, corner, free kick or other dead-ball moment when possible. You can still request a tactic in open play, but keep defending until the transition has completed rather than immediately stepping a player out of position to force the new shape.

Plan for the transition window

When you select a tactic, watch for the Tactical Change in Progress notice and the movement of your players. Continue with low-risk actions while the setup settles: retain possession, delay a press or protect the central area instead of assuming the new roles are already active. Once the players have reached their new positions, execute the plan you selected.

How to save and load tactic codes in FC 26

FC 26 adds a code workflow for preserving and reusing a tactic. EA’s FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive identifies the relevant controls as Save Code, Use Code and Load Saved Code.

Save a tactic code

  1. Open My Tactics and display the tactic you want to preserve.
  2. Open the tactic-management controls. Choose Save Code.
  3. Confirm the save if the game asks you to do so, then keep the code in your saved-code list. Labeling or recording what the code represents outside the game is useful if you maintain several versions, but the game’s documented limit is the list itself rather than an unlimited archive.

Load a saved tactic code

  1. Open My Tactics and choose Use Code.
  2. Use the right stick to select Load Saved Code.
  3. Choose the saved code you want to load and confirm it.
  4. Review the resulting formation, settings and roles before relying on it in a match. Loading a code is a configuration operation; it is not the same as selecting a tactic during live play.

EA says FC 26 allows up to 10 saved tactic codes. If the list is full, you can overwrite an existing saved code. Decide which code is obsolete before confirming an overwrite so that a useful setup is not accidentally replaced.

Where FC 26 codes can be reused

EA says saved tactic codes work in and between Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons and Friendlies. This is the reason to use a code when you want to carry a configuration between those listed modes. It does not establish that every other mode, account state or future game version will accept the same code, so keep the claim within the modes EA names.

FC 26 in-match controls: what is and is not confirmed

The FC 26 source confirms how to save and load tactic codes, but the retrieved passage does not confirm the exact button sequence for switching a prepared tactic during an FC 26 match. FC 25’s “press Left on the directional buttons” instruction is therefore a version-labeled instruction, not a universal FC 25-and-FC 26 guarantee.

If you are playing FC 26, open the game’s controls/help screen and look for the function assigned to My Tactics or tactical changes. Follow the prompt displayed by your edition and control layout. Remapped controls, platform-specific button glyphs and mode-specific differences can change what you physically press even when the function has the same name. Do not infer a control from a face-button diagram that belongs to a different layout.

EA separately describes Competitive and Authentic as FC 26 gameplay presets. They are not names for your saved custom tactics, so do not use those preset labels as substitutes for a tactic-slot name or code.

Choosing between a match switch and a saved code

Need Use Why
Change your team’s shape during the current FC 25 match A prepared custom-tactic slot The FC 25 My Tactics menu is designed to select one of the named formations and settings while play continues.
Keep a setup for later An FC 26 saved tactic code The code preserves a configuration for loading again instead of rebuilding it manually.
Move the same configuration between listed FC 26 modes Save the code, then use Use Code and Load Saved Code EA lists Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons and Friendlies as supported contexts.
React immediately to a dangerous attack The tactic already prepared for that game state Building or loading a configuration during the match costs more time than selecting a ready slot; the actual transition still requires time.

A practical five-slot layout for FC 25

The names below are examples of an organization system, not EA-prescribed tactics. Adjust the formations, settings and roles to your squad and play style.

  • Base: the shape you use when the score and match state are neutral.
  • Press: a more proactive setup for moments when you need to disrupt buildup.
  • Protect: a conservative shape for defending a lead or calming a match.
  • Chase: an attacking setup for when you need a goal.
  • Close: a specialized plan for the final phase, such as protecting a narrow advantage or controlling risk.

Because FC 25 shares the lineup across the slots, choose roles that your actual players can perform in each shape. A name tells you what the plan is; it does not change a player’s attributes or create a substitute lineup.

Troubleshooting fast switches

The My Tactics menu does not open

  • Verify that you are using the directional buttons, not the left analog stick. The FC 25 documented command is Left on the directional buttons.
  • Check the in-game controls screen for a remapped directional input or a mode-specific control scheme.
  • If you are in FC 26, do not assume the FC 25 sequence is confirmed. Look for the current My Tactics prompt in your own version.

The wrong tactic is selected

  • Read both the tactic name and formation in the menu before selecting.
  • Remember that EA says the active tactic appears at the top of the FC 25 list; use that display to verify what is currently active.
  • Rename similar slots so that their purpose is obvious at a glance, then recheck the saved formation and roles after editing.

The team looks out of position after selection

  • Look for the Tactical Change in Progress message. EA says the requested settings have not yet taken effect while that message is displayed.
  • Allow players to move into their new positions instead of judging the tactic immediately.
  • For a major change, request it during a stoppage or while the ball is out of play, when EA says the transition can be quicker.

A saved FC 26 code is missing or cannot be added

  • Use Use Code, then move the right stick to Load Saved Code; selecting the wrong panel will not show the saved-code list.
  • Check whether you have reached the documented limit of 10 saved codes. If the list is full, overwrite a code you no longer need.
  • Confirm that you are using one of the modes EA names: Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons or Friendlies.

Fast-match checklist

  1. Create and name each tactic before kickoff.
  2. Confirm the formation, tactical settings and roles in every slot.
  3. In FC 25, remember that up to five custom tactics share the same lineup.
  4. For an FC 25 live switch, press Left on the directional buttons, read the names and formations, and press the direction assigned to the chosen tactic.
  5. Watch for Tactical Change in Progress and wait for players to reposition.
  6. In FC 26, save reusable configurations with Save Code; retrieve them through Use Code → Load Saved Code with the right stick.
  7. For FC 26’s live-match button command, follow the control prompt shown by your own game rather than carrying over an unverified FC 25 instruction.

Sources and version boundaries

The FC 25 activation and transition behavior described here comes from EA SPORTS’ FC IQ Deep Dive. The FC 26 code controls, 10-code limit and listed game modes come from EA SPORTS’ Gameplay Deep Dive. EA’s overview of FC 26 gameplay presets is available on its FC 26 gameplay features page. The exact FC 26 in-match directional sequence was not confirmed in the cited FC 26 passage, so this article labels that control boundary instead of presenting it as universal.
