How the save system works
The launch guidance for Among the Trolls describes a manual-save system rather than a conventional checkpoint system. Beds and shelters are the documented places where you create a save. There is no autosave in the launch FAQ summary, so simply reaching a new area, collecting an item, or entering a building should not be treated as a backup.

Creating a reliable manual save
Save at a bed or shelter
- Travel to a bed or shelter. These are the documented save points; an ordinary camp, doorway, or newly discovered location is not automatically a save point.
- Use the on-screen interaction for saving. If several interactions are available, choose the one that explicitly saves the game.
- Wait for the interaction, animation, or confirmation to finish before moving away. Closing the game or leaving the area during the write can leave you unsure which state was actually recorded.
- After the save completes, continue playing. If you are about to leave the safe area for a high-risk activity, return and save again immediately before departure.
The launch guide relays the FAQ’s advice to save often. In practice, that means treating a bed or shelter as a deliberate checkpoint: use it after major progress, not only at the end of a play session.

When to save
- Before a dungeon: A dungeon can combine combat, exploration, and a long route back. A save at its entrance limits the amount you must repeat after a death.
- Before a dangerous fight: Save before committing to an encounter whose outcome is uncertain. Do not assume the game will create a combat checkpoint.
- Before a lengthy crossing: Long travel increases the amount of progress that can be lost in one death or crash. Save before setting out when a bed or shelter is available.
- After important progress: Use a save point after completing a major objective or acquiring something you do not want to repeat.
- Before quitting: If you are ending a session, save at the nearest available bed or shelter rather than relying on the game to remember your last actions.
There is no published launch rule in the available guidance stating that every bed or shelter creates a separate, permanent slot. For that reason, do not assume that visiting several save points gives you a recoverable timeline unless the game’s own load screen visibly offers those entries.
Restoring progress after you die
Load the newest save you intentionally made
- After death, choose the game’s load or continue option rather than beginning a new game.
- Review the available saves and their dates or times if the menu displays them.
- Select the latest entry that you created at a bed or shelter before the dangerous section.
- Confirm that the world, inventory, and position match the point at which you saved. If they do, continue from there and make another manual save at the next safe point.
With no autosave, anything done after your selected save can need to be repeated. That can include travel, gathering, combat, and exploration. The practical consequence is simple: a save made immediately before a risk is much more valuable than one made an hour earlier.
If the load screen appears to be missing progress
First determine whether the missing actions occurred before or after the last completed save. If you left a bed or shelter before its save interaction finished, the game may still contain only the earlier save. Likewise, if you played on another computer while Cloud synchronization was pending, the local and cloud copies may not represent the same moment.

- Check the displayed save date and time, if available.
- Load the newest entry that you know was completed, rather than choosing an entry solely because it has a familiar name.
- If the newest entry is unexpectedly old, stop playing and preserve the local files before trying different copies.
Where Windows save files are stored
SteamDB lists the Windows save directory as:
[Steam Library]/steamapps/common/Among the Trolls/Among_the_Trolls/Saved/SaveGames
The listed save files use the .sav extension. The first part of the path is your own Steam library location, so it may be on a different drive from the default installation. Do not confuse the game’s installation folder with a cloud-only record: the path above is a local folder on the computer where the game is installed.
Back up the folder before troubleshooting
- Exit Among the Trolls.
- Open the game’s installation directory and then open
Savedfollowed bySaveGames. - Copy the entire
SaveGamesfolder to a separate location, such as another drive or a dated folder in your documents. - Give the backup a clear name containing the date and the computer used. Do not overwrite the original files while testing a fix.
A backup is especially important before changing Cloud settings, replacing files, or moving to another computer. If an experiment produces a worse result, you can close the game and restore the untouched copy.

Using Steam Cloud without losing the newer copy
What Cloud does
The launch guide reports Steam Cloud support. Steam’s documentation describes Cloud as a service that stores and synchronizes save files between computers. Synchronization is not the same as a full backup system: Steam Support states that it cannot recover lost saves, and an older copy can replace a newer one if the wrong conflict choice is made.

Handling a Steam Cloud conflict
- Do not launch the game repeatedly while a conflict is unresolved. Each launch can create another opportunity for the wrong copy to become current.
- Read the dates and times shown for the local and Cloud files. Steam’s documentation specifically advises evaluating those timestamps.
- Choose the copy that contains the latest completed manual save you recognize. A newer timestamp is useful evidence, but confirm that it belongs to the session in which you made the progress.
- If you are uncertain, cancel the decision long enough to copy the local
SaveGamesfolder to a dated backup location. - After selecting a copy, start the game and verify the location and progress. Then make a fresh save at a bed or shelter before continuing.
Cloud should therefore be treated as synchronization between machines, not as an unlimited undo function. It may help you obtain the newer file, but it cannot guarantee recovery after a file has been overwritten or deleted.
Moving your progress to another Windows PC
- On the original PC, exit the game and copy
[Steam Library]/steamapps/common/Among the Trolls/Among_the_Trolls/Saved/SaveGamesto a dated backup location. - Allow Steam Cloud to finish synchronizing, if it is enabled, before shutting down the original computer.
- Install the game on the second PC and launch it only after Steam has completed any Cloud synchronization prompt.
- If the expected progress is present, make a new manual save at a bed or shelter and verify that the new timestamp changes.
- If the expected progress is not present, close the game before creating more saves. Compare the second PC’s local folder with the backup from the first PC, keeping an untouched copy of both.
Do not copy files into the active folder while the game is running. The game or Steam may rewrite the directory and undo the replacement. When comparing files, use the save dates and the progress visible in-game rather than file names alone.

What to do when a bed save does not restore
The official Steam community page contains player reports of progress not returning after a bed save. Those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a confirmed developer diagnosis, so treat them as troubleshooting clues rather than proof of a specific bug.
Check that the save actually completed
Return to the exact bed or shelter interaction and observe whether the game gives a completion indication. If you moved away, quit, or forced the game closed immediately after starting the interaction, create another save and wait for it to finish before testing the load screen.
Separate a missing save from a missing action
Load the newest known entry and compare your position, inventory, and objective state. If those match an earlier point, the save may be valid but simply older than you expected. This is different from a file that appears in the folder but cannot be loaded.
Preserve both local and Cloud evidence
Before disabling Cloud, deleting files, or accepting a conflict, copy the local SaveGames folder. Record which computer produced each copy and its date. If Cloud presents a choice, compare the timestamps and keep the newer known-good file. Steam Support’s statement that lost saves cannot be recovered is the reason to preserve files before experimenting.
Test one change at a time
- Close the game.
- Back up the current local folder.
- Change only one variable, such as selecting the other side of a Cloud conflict.
- Launch the game and check the result.
- If the result is worse, close the game and restore the backup before trying another change.
This method prevents several simultaneous changes from destroying the information needed to identify which copy was usable.

A practical save routine
For a low-risk play session, save at the first available bed or shelter, continue until you complete a meaningful objective, and save again before quitting. For a high-risk session, save immediately before the dungeon, fight, or crossing; if you return safely, save again before beginning the next activity. When changing computers, make a dated local backup even if Cloud is enabled.
This routine matches the limits of the launch system: manual saves protect the moments you choose, while Cloud can synchronize a current file but cannot recreate every historical state.
Version and availability note
The documented behavior applies to the Steam PC launch reported for 14 October 2026. Save systems and bugs can change through patches. If a later in-game FAQ, patch note, or support notice changes the location of save points, the presence of autosaves, or Cloud behavior, follow that newer notice for the installed version.
