What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The quickest method is to open a place in Google Maps, tap or click Save, and choose a list. Create separate lists for a destination, day, or category, then share the relevant list with your companions. Saving a place is different from saving a route or downloading an offline map, so setting up all three correctly matters when you are traveling.
What Google Maps saves—and what it does not
A saved place is a location record—such as a restaurant, hotel, museum, viewpoint, or map pin—stored in a Google Maps list. You must be signed in to a Google Account for saved places and lists to follow you between devices. Google’s Save favorite places – Computer guide says saved lists can contain up to 3,000 entries.

Saving a place does not create turn-by-turn directions. It also does not download map data for areas without reliable mobile service. Those are separate Google Maps features:
| Feature | What it is for | Sharing and connectivity |
|---|---|---|
| Saved place or list | Collects locations for later reference and groups them by trip, day, or category. | Saved places are private by default. A list can be shared. It works as an online collection unless map data is downloaded separately. |
| Saved trip | A mobile shortcut for a frequently used route. Google documents driving, public-transport, and two-wheeler trip types. | It is a route shortcut, not a collection of restaurants or attractions. |
| Offline map | Downloads a geographic area so Google Maps can provide limited navigation when connectivity is poor. | The complete driving route must fit inside the downloaded area. Offline driving has no live traffic information or alternate routes; offline transit, bicycle, and walking directions are unavailable. |
Keeping these concepts separate prevents a common mistake: assuming that a carefully organized list will automatically provide offline directions or preserve a planned route.

Save a place to a list
On a computer
- Open Google Maps and sign in to the Google Account you will use during the trip.
- Search for a business, attraction, hotel, address, or coordinates, or click a location directly on the map.
- Open the place’s information panel and select Save.
- Choose an existing list. To start a new category, select the option to create a new list, give it a name, and save the place there.
The computer instructions and list controls are documented in Google’s Save favorite places – Computer and Create a list of places – Computer guides.
On Android
- Search for the location in the Google Maps app, or press and hold a point on the map to drop a pin.
- Tap the place name or address card that appears at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Save.
- Select a list, or create a new one from the save screen.
This procedure also works for a location that does not have a formal business listing, provided you save the dropped pin or address card. Google describes the Android flow in its saved-places help.
On iPhone or iPad
Open a place in the current Google Maps app, then use its Save control and select a list. Google maintains a platform-specific list guide at Create a list of places. Button placement and wording can differ between app versions, so look on the place’s information card rather than assuming the control is in a fixed location.

After saving, reopen the place and confirm that the selected list is shown, or open your saved lists and look for the entry. If it is missing, check that you are signed in to the intended account; saving while signed out will not give you a synchronized personal list.
Create lists that match the way you travel
You can create a list before saving anything or create one during the Save flow. On a computer, use the list controls described in Google’s Create a list of places – Computer guide. On mobile, open the saved-places area and choose New list; Google’s Android navigation is documented in Find your places & lists in the You tab.

A new list can have a name, description, and optional icon. Use names that tell you both the destination and the purpose. For example:
- Tokyo – food: restaurants, cafés, markets, and bars worth considering.
- Tokyo – sights: museums, parks, neighborhoods, and viewpoints.
- Tokyo – day 1: stops that belong to a specific day’s route.
- Tokyo – backup: alternatives if a reservation, weather, or opening hours disrupt the main plan.
There is no need to put every stop in one giant list. A destination list is easy to browse, while day-based lists make a tightly scheduled itinerary easier to read. If you are uncertain which attractions will fit, keep confirmed stops and backup options in different lists rather than deleting possibilities.
Find, edit, and reorganize saved places
Open your lists
On desktop, open Google Maps and go to the saved-places area to see your lists. On Android, tap the You tab and open the saved section. Google’s You-tab guide covers finding lists and saved places. The exact tab label can vary by platform or app version.
Edit a list
List controls let you change a name or description, add or remove entries, hide or show a list, and delete a list. Hiding a list removes its markers from your normal map view without requiring you to delete the saved places. Use that when you want a clean map during the trip but may need the collection later.
Search and filter on Android
Google’s Android help documents searching and filtering saved places, including filtering by a personal note. If you add notes such as “reservation at 7:30,” “closed Mondays,” or “near the north entrance,” those notes become useful retrieval terms. The same guide also describes selecting places and moving them into another list, which is helpful when a general destination list becomes a day-by-day itinerary.

Use notes as decision data
Notes are most useful when they record information that does not belong in the place name: reservation times, estimated visit length, dietary requirements, a station entrance, or a weather-dependent backup plan. Keep the wording short enough to scan on a phone. A note is attached to your saved-place organization; it is not a replacement for a confirmed booking or a navigation route.
Build a practical trip structure
Separate collection from schedule
Start by collecting all plausible locations in destination or category lists. Once dates and opening hours are known, move only the stops you expect to visit into day lists. This preserves research without making every saved marker look like a commitment.
Keep a backup category
A backup list is useful when a restaurant is full, rain changes an outdoor plan, or a museum is closed. It also prevents the main day list from becoming cluttered with options that are not part of the intended route.
Use one list for a shared decision
If several travelers are voting on restaurants or activities, put the candidates in one list and use notes to record constraints. Once the group decides, move the selected places into the relevant day list. This keeps the collaborative discussion separate from the final schedule.
Do not overfill a day list
Google Maps stores locations, not realistic travel time between them. A list with ten pins may still be an impossible day if the stops are far apart or have fixed entry times. Treat the list as a visual planning layer, then use directions separately to check the order and travel time.

Share an itinerary with companions
Google states: “Only you can find your saved places unless you create and share a list of places.” That privacy rule is described in Google Maps Help. Saving a place alone does not notify other travelers or expose your lists.
Share a list by link
- Open the list’s options or sharing control.
- Turn on the list’s sharing setting and copy its link.
- Send the link through the communication channel your group already uses.
- Review who can find the list and adjust the visibility setting if the list should no longer be public to link holders.
The available visibility choices and labels can change, but the important distinction is that sharing applies to the list you choose, not automatically to every saved place in your account.
Give companions editing access
Google’s desktop list guide documents inviting other people to edit a shared list and turning editing access off later. Use editing access only for people who should add, remove, or reorganize places. For everyone else, a view-only link avoids accidental changes to the itinerary.
Follow someone else’s list
A traveler can follow another person’s shared list. Following is useful when one person researches and the rest of the group wants the collection available in their own Maps account without taking ownership of the original list.
What cannot be shared
Google explicitly says starred places cannot be shared as a list. If a group needs access, save those locations in a regular list and share that list instead. Do not assume that a star, a private saved marker, or a route shortcut is visible to companions.
Best Value
Saved places versus saved trips
For a repeated commute or a regular airport transfer, a saved trip may be more appropriate than a list of locations. Google’s Save and manage your trips in Google Maps – Android guide covers saving and managing frequent trips on Android, including driving, public transport, and two-wheeler trip types.
A saved trip is a mobile route shortcut: it helps you reopen directions for a recurring journey. It does not group restaurants, hotels, or attractions and should not be used as a substitute for an itinerary list. For a vacation, use saved places to collect stops, then request directions when you are ready to travel between them.
Prepare for weak connectivity with an offline map
If you expect poor service, download the geographic area before leaving. Google’s Download areas & navigate offline in Google Maps help explains the limitations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The entire driving route must lie inside the downloaded map area for offline driving guidance to work.
- Offline driving does not include live traffic information or alternate routes.
- Offline transit, bicycle, and walking directions are unavailable.
- Some countries or regions may not allow offline-map downloads.
Download an area that covers the hotel, airport, and every road segment you may need—not just the pin for the first attraction. A saved place remains a useful reference even when you have not downloaded its surrounding map, but it will not by itself supply offline navigation.
An end-to-end setup for a trip
- Sign in to the Google Account you will use on the trip.
- Create destination, category, or day lists before saving a large number of places.
- Save each hotel, restaurant, attraction, and backup option to the appropriate list.
- Add short notes for reservations, opening-hour concerns, entrances, or other personal reminders.
- Use the saved-places area to search, filter, move, hide, or remove entries as the plan changes.
- Share only the list your companions need, and choose viewing or editing access deliberately.
- Keep route shortcuts separate from location lists; create a saved trip only for a frequently repeated journey.
- Download the required offline map area and verify that any planned driving route fits inside it.
- Before departure, open the lists on the phone you will carry and confirm that the expected account and entries are present.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A saved place is missing on another device. | The device is using a different Google Account, or the save did not complete. | Check the account shown in Maps, reopen the place, and confirm its list membership. |
| Companions cannot see a place. | The place is still in a private list, or it was saved as a star. | Move it to a regular list, enable sharing for that list, and send the current link. |
| The shared itinerary changed unexpectedly. | Another person has editing access. | Review the list’s collaborators and turn off editing access when group planning is finished. |
| The map is covered with too many markers. | Several lists are visible at once. | Hide lists you are not using for the current day; hiding is different from deleting. |
| Offline directions do not work for the whole journey. | The route extends beyond the downloaded area, or the mode is transit, walking, or cycling. | Download an area containing the full driving route and remember that unsupported offline modes remain unavailable. |
| A list will not accept another entry. | The list has reached Google’s 3,000-entry product limit. | Remove obsolete entries or divide the collection into smaller lists by destination, year, or category. |
Limits and changing labels
The 3,000-entry ceiling is a Google Maps product limit, not a recommendation for how many places to plan. Large collections are harder to scan, so dividing them by destination or day is useful long before reaching that cap.
Google can change tab names, button placement, and list controls between desktop, Android, and iPhone or iPad releases. The stable concepts are the place card’s Save action, the saved or You area for retrieval, list-level sharing, and a separate offline-map download. If a label differs, look for the same function in the place information card or saved-list controls rather than treating a cosmetic change as a missing feature.
