On a phone, press and hold the image, then choose Save image or Download image. If the command is missing, use a download link, check the page’s downloads area, or ask the site owner for an authorized copy.
Save an image on a computer
The exact wording differs among Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, but the workflow is the same: open the original image, invoke the browser’s context menu, and select its save or download command.
Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows or Linux
- Open the page containing the image.
- Right-click the image. If it opens a larger viewer, right-click the image again in that viewer.
- Choose Save image as… (the wording can vary slightly).
- Select a folder, change the filename if needed, and click Save.
If you see Open image in new tab, use it first. The new tab often exposes the original file rather than a thumbnail or a page overlay. Then repeat the context-menu step.
Safari on Mac
- Control-click the image (or use a two-finger click on a trackpad).
- Choose Download Linked File when the image is a link or another downloadable object.
- Check Safari’s configured download location after the transfer finishes.
Apple’s Safari instructions cover downloading an image or other object through the context menu. The support page identifies Safari 8.0 documentation, so labels and layout can differ in current Safari releases.

When the image is a link rather than a picture
Some pages put a transparent link over an image or provide a separate download control. Right-click the visible image and inspect the menu for Open link in new tab, Save link as… or Download Linked File. Saving the link can preserve the original file when saving the displayed element would capture only a thumbnail.
Save an image on a phone or tablet
Firefox for Android
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Press and hold the image.
- Choose Save image.
Mozilla documents this command for Firefox on Android. The destination is controlled by Android and Firefox, so the file may appear in the device’s Downloads or Pictures area.
Chrome, Safari and other mobile browsers
- Press and hold the image until a menu appears.
- Choose Save image, Download image or the closest available command.
- Allow Photos, Files or storage access if the operating system asks.
Menu names and destinations vary by browser and operating-system version. If a long press does nothing, tap the image once to open its viewer, then press and hold again.

| Device or browser | Where to look first | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows or Linux | Your browser’s Downloads list or the folder selected in the save dialog | Sort by date and verify the extension |
| Mac | Safari or browser Downloads list, then the configured download folder | Use Finder’s search if the folder was changed |
| Android | Files app, Downloads, or Pictures | Look for a recent file and confirm the browser that downloaded it |
| iPhone or iPad | Files app, usually Downloads, or Photos if you chose a photo-saving command | Check both Recents and Downloads |
In Chrome, open the Downloads interface from the browser menu to see the filename, status and destination. Safari also lets you choose where downloads are saved. If the item is listed as failed, retry from the original page rather than repeatedly opening a partial file.
Choose the right file and quality
Thumbnail versus original
A page may display a small, compressed thumbnail while linking to a larger image. Use Open image in new tab or the page’s download button before saving. Compare pixel dimensions or file size if quality matters.
File extensions and MIME types
The website’s server sends a media type, also called a MIME type or Content-Type. That value helps the browser decide whether to display, download or hand the file to another application. Firefox notes that available actions vary by file type. An image that ends in an unfamiliar extension may still be valid, while a file named with a familiar extension can fail if the server supplied the wrong type.
Do not rename a file merely to make it look like a JPEG or PNG. Open it with an image viewer first, or use a trusted conversion program only when you are authorized to convert the file.

Transparent backgrounds and animated files
PNG and WebP files can preserve transparency. GIF and some WebP files can contain animation; a screenshot or copied frame will not preserve the animation. Save the original file when you need all frames or metadata.
What to do when “Save image” is missing
The image is inside an embedded viewer
Photo galleries, document viewers and social feeds may intercept the normal context menu. Look for a dedicated download icon, open the item in a new tab, or use the browser menu on the linked object rather than the visible canvas.
The page uses a CSS background
A decorative background may not behave like an image element. Look for an accessible image or download link supplied by the site. If none exists, there is no universal browser command that reliably extracts every background image; contact the site owner for the original or permission to use it.
The site disables ordinary clicking
Disabling a context menu does not change ownership or reuse rights. Do not attempt to bypass access controls, paywalls or bot protections. Use an official download control, request a copy, or choose a properly licensed alternative.

Download warnings and safe handling
Browsers may warn about a download that could make unwanted changes, has a suspicious reputation or does not match the page’s expected file type. Chrome says these warnings help users avoid unwanted changes, and Microsoft recommends downloading from reputable websites and sources.
- Cancel a download you did not intentionally start.
- Verify the domain before opening an unfamiliar file.
- Be especially cautious with executable extensions such as .exe, .msi, .dmg, .pkg, .apk or scripts; an ordinary photograph normally uses an image format.
- Keep browser and security software updated.
Saving a copy is separate from permission to reuse, sell or publish it. Check the image’s license and obtain permission when required. A downloaded file is not automatically public-domain or free for commercial use.

Troubleshooting checklist
Nothing downloads
- Confirm that the click targeted the image, not surrounding text or an overlay.
- Try opening the image in a new tab and saving from there.
- Check whether the browser blocked pop-ups or downloads for that site.
- Inspect the Downloads list for a failed or paused transfer.
The saved file is blank or unreadable
- Retry from the page’s original image URL or official download control.
- Check the extension and the server-supplied media type; a mismatched type can change browser behavior.
- Delete the partial file and download again on a stable connection.
The image looks low-quality
- You probably saved a thumbnail. Open the linked original or choose the site’s full-size download option.
- Do not enlarge a small file and expect detail that was never downloaded.
The file cannot be found
- Open the browser’s Downloads list and use its folder or reveal command.
- Search the device for files modified today, then check Downloads, Pictures and Photos.
- Review the browser’s configured download location before trying again.
A warning appears
Stop if the domain or file type is unexpected. Proceed only when you trust the source and deliberately requested the file; otherwise remove the download and use an official, reputable source.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save an image that appears only after scrolling?
Scroll until it has loaded, wait for the image to finish rendering, and then use the normal image menu. Lazy-loaded images may not exist in the page until that point.
Why did my phone save the picture to Files instead of Photos?
The browser’s save command and the operating system decide the destination. Check Files/Downloads, then move the image to Photos if you want it in your camera library.
Recommended Free Tools
Is taking a screenshot the same as downloading the image?
No. A screenshot records what is visible on screen and can lose original resolution, transparency, animation and metadata. Downloading the source file preserves what the website actually serves.
Can I publish an image after saving it?
Not automatically. Review the license and obtain permission when the license or your intended use requires it.
