1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo save an image as JPG, PNG, or WebP, open it in an editor that supports the target format, choose Save As or Export, select the format from the actual file-type menu, and save a new file. Renaming photo.png to photo.jpg does not convert the image encoding. The right choice depends on transparency, lossless preservation, destination compatibility, and file size.
Choose the format before you save
| Format | Best fit | Transparency | Compression and compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG/JPEG | Photographs and images where broad compatibility matters | No alpha transparency | Lossy compression; quality and file size depend on export settings |
| PNG | Logos, screenshots, diagrams, text, and images needing lossless detail | Supports transparency | Lossless; often larger than a comparable lossy image |
| WebP | Web delivery when the destination accepts it | Supports lossy and lossless modes | Google describes it as a modern format supported by software and browsers including Chrome and Opera; check the receiving service before using it |
Google documents WebP as having both lossy and lossless compression options compared with JPEG and PNG (Google WebP overview; Google WebP FAQ). No single format is universally smallest or highest quality for every source image and encoder.
Use JPG when
The image is photographic, does not need transparent pixels, and the website or application specifically requests JPG or JPEG. Repeatedly opening and resaving a JPG can introduce additional lossy changes, so retain the original when possible.
Use PNG when
You need transparency, crisp text, interface screenshots, diagrams, or lossless preservation. PNG is also a dependable choice when the destination does not document WebP support.

Use WebP when
The destination accepts WebP and you want to choose between lossy and lossless encoding. For a lossless source such as a logo, select the lossless mode in an editor that exposes that setting; for photographs, a lossy export may be appropriate. Confirm the receiving app or upload form accepts WebP first.
Save an image in an editor
- Open the original image in an editor that supports the format you need.
- Choose File, then Save As, Export, or the application’s equivalent.
- Pick JPEG/JPG, PNG, or WebP in the file-type or format selector. Do not rely on changing only the filename extension.
- Choose a new name and folder so the original remains available.
- Review any format-specific settings, save, and reopen the result in the intended app or upload destination.
Menus vary by application and version. Paint.NET documents a format-specific save configuration dialog for some formats, so the final click sequence is not identical for every file type (Paint.NET File menu documentation).
Paint.NET on Windows
Paint.NET documents support for PNG, JPEG, and WebP (Paint.NET features and documentation).
- Open the image in Paint.NET.
- Use File > Save As.
- In Save as type, choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
- Enter the destination filename and select Save.
- If Paint.NET displays a format-specific configuration dialog, set the available options and confirm.
JPEG exports may ask for a quality value; higher quality generally retains more visual detail while producing a larger file. Keep the original if you may need to export again.

Adobe Photoshop
Adobe’s current Save for Web documentation lists JPEG and PNG output choices (Adobe Save for Web).
- Open the image in Photoshop.
- Choose File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy), or use the export command available in your Photoshop version.
- Select JPEG or PNG in the format menu.
- Adjust the displayed quality, transparency, and other options appropriate to the selected format.
- Choose Save, set the filename and folder, and confirm the export.
If WebP is not present in your Photoshop version’s export list, use another editor or the command-line converter below rather than changing the extension.

The labels may be Export, Export As, or Save a Copy. The important test is whether the format appears in the application’s real output list. If it does not, that application cannot be assumed to create that format; use documented conversion software instead.
Convert to WebP with Google’s cwebp tool
Google provides the cwebp command-line utility and precompiled tools for Linux, Windows, and macOS (Google WebP Getting Started). After installing the tool for your platform, run it from a terminal in the folder containing the source image.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →PNG or JPEG to WebP
This basic command writes a WebP file from a PNG input:
cwebp input.png -o output.webp
The same syntax can be used with a JPEG source:
cwebp input.jpg -o output.webp
Use a different output name or path when you do not want to overwrite an existing file. For encoder options, quality controls, and platform-specific installation details, follow Google’s cwebp documentation rather than assuming that every build exposes identical defaults.
What the command does not do
cwebp creates WebP output; it does not turn a filename extension into a conversion. It also does not decide whether lossy or lossless output is appropriate for your use case without the options you provide. Inspect the generated file and test it where it will be used.
Set quality, transparency, and compatibility deliberately
Preserve transparency
JPG cannot carry transparent pixels. If a transparent logo or cutout becomes a solid background after export, choose PNG or a WebP mode and application that preserve transparency. Also check whether the destination itself supports transparent uploads.

Balance size and visual quality
Lossy JPEG and lossy WebP discard information to reduce size; the visible result depends on the source and encoder settings. PNG is lossless but can be larger for photographic material. Compare the saved file at its intended display size instead of judging only by the extension.
Match the destination’s requirements
A CMS, form, game engine, or messaging app may restrict extensions, dimensions, or maximum bytes. If its instructions say JPEG, save JPEG even when WebP could be smaller. If it accepts WebP, confirm that previews, downloads, and downstream editors all handle it.
Verify the saved file
- Check that the new file has the intended extension and is in the expected folder.
- Reopen it in an image viewer or editor. A successful reopen confirms that the file is structurally readable by that application.
- Inspect transparency on a contrasting background when transparency matters.
- Upload or import a copy into the actual destination and confirm that it displays correctly.
- Keep the original until the destination has accepted and displayed the converted file.
An extension alone is not proof of encoding. A converter or editor should create the file, and reopening it provides a practical check of the result.
Troubleshoot common conversion problems
The format is missing from the menu
The current application or version may not support that output. Check its official documentation, update it if appropriate, or open the image in an application that documents support for the required format. Paint.NET’s documentation explicitly lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP support; Photoshop’s cited Save for Web page lists JPEG and PNG.

You probably selected JPEG, which has no transparency. Export as PNG or a transparency-capable WebP mode, then test the result against a contrasting background.
The WebP command is not found
Install Google’s cwebp package for your operating system and ensure the executable is on your command path. Google documents precompiled tools for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Then run the command from the directory containing the source file or provide full paths.

The destination rejects the file
Check the destination’s documented extension and size requirements. Re-export in the requested format rather than merely renaming the file. If WebP is refused, use JPEG or PNG according to the destination’s instructions.
The output looks worse than the original
Review the export’s quality or compression setting and compare the result at normal viewing size. Avoid repeated lossy re-exports by returning to the original source for each new version.

Frequently asked questions
Is JPG different from JPEG?
No. JPG and JPEG are two filename extensions for the same image format; choose whichever extension the destination requests.
Can one source image be exported in all three formats?
Yes, provided your editor or converter supports each target. Export each version from the original source so that a lossy intermediate does not reduce later results.
