To keep Alfira alive during the Dark Urge’s first camp murder event, knock her unconscious in the Emerald Grove before taking the long rest that triggers the scene. Activate Non-Lethal Attacks and use a melee attack; spell damage can kill her despite the toggle. When Alfira is unavailable at the triggering rest, the game sends Quil Grootslang instead. Alfira survives, but Quil becomes the victim, so this is a redirected murder rather than a way to prevent the event.
What the Alfira rescue actually does
The Dark Urge’s early camp scene is a scripted progression event. After you cross the bridge toward the Blighted Village and prepare to take a long rest, the game can bring Alfira to camp, even if you have never spoken with her. Declining her invitation does not cancel the scene. The game checks whether Alfira is available when the relevant rest begins; if she is not, it uses another bard, Quil Grootslang, for the same role.

That distinction matters. There is no version of this workaround in which everyone walks away unharmed. Making Alfira unavailable redirects the scripted killing to Quil. If your goal is specifically to keep Alfira alive, the method works as an event substitution. If your goal is to spare every bard, it does not.
Before you start: the four decisions that matter
| Decision point | Correct choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| When to act | Before the long rest associated with the Dark Urge scene | Knocking Alfira out after the scene has already been queued may be too late. |
| Attack setting | Turn on Non-Lethal Attacks | The passive changes qualifying attacks from lethal to knockout damage. |
| Attack type | Use a melee attack | Most melee attacks can knock a target out while the passive is active. |
| Expected result | Quil appears if Alfira is unavailable | The replacement bard is the cost of preserving Alfira. |
Make a save before the rest if this is a high-stakes run, particularly in Honour Mode. A save gives you a practical way to retry the sequence if an intervening camp event produces an outcome you did not intend; it is not a guarantee that every event queue will behave identically after reloading.

Step-by-step: knock Alfira out before the triggering rest
- Advance Act One until the event is approaching. The Dark Urge scene is associated with crossing the bridge toward the Blighted Village and then preparing to long rest. You do not need to wait for Alfira to invite you personally, because the event can occur whether or not you have spoken with her.
- Go to Alfira in the Emerald Grove before resting. If you have already crossed the bridge, treat every subsequent long rest as a point at which the scene might be selected. Do not assume that refusing an invitation has removed her from the event.
- Enable the Non-Lethal Attacks passive. Confirm the toggle is visibly active before you attack. The setting is what allows qualifying physical attacks to leave a target unconscious instead of dead.
- Use a melee attack. Choose an ordinary melee attack that can deal damage and finish the encounter with Alfira unconscious. Do not use a spell or another source of spell damage: the non-lethal setting does not make spell damage safe, and spell damage can kill her.
- Verify the result. Do not rely only on the attack animation. Check that Alfira is actually unconscious and therefore unavailable before you leave and begin the rest. If she is still standing, the substitution condition has not been met.
- Take the long rest that can trigger the scene. If the Dark Urge event fires while Alfira is unavailable, Quil should appear in her place. The scene still happens; the victim changes.
The key is the order: toggle first, melee attack second, confirmation third, rest last. A lethal hit, a spell, or a rest taken before Alfira is unavailable defeats the purpose of the setup.
Why Non-Lethal Attacks and melee damage are essential
Non-Lethal Attacks is a combat passive, not a universal protection effect. With it active, most melee attacks can end a target’s turn in an unconscious state rather than killing the target. The mechanics do not extend that protection to every damage type. In particular, spell damage remains lethal for this purpose.
Before committing to the rest, check three things:
- The non-lethal toggle is on for the character making the attack.
- The attack you selected is a melee attack rather than a spell or spell-like damage source.
- Alfira’s status shows that she is unconscious and unavailable, not merely injured.
This special event should not be used as a general rule for protecting non-player characters. The game commonly treats knocked-out characters as dead in other situations. The Alfira workaround depends on the Dark Urge scene’s specific availability check, so applying the same tactic to another NPC may produce a fatal result.

The scene is tied to progression, not to a conversation choice. The trigger is linked to crossing toward the Blighted Village and preparing to rest, while camp events can be resolved in an order that is not always obvious from the story. Alfira can therefore appear even when you have not accepted her invitation or spoken with her at all.
Intervening camp scenes
Another camp event can take precedence and delay the bard scene. The BG3 Wiki gives recruiting Karlach before Wyll as an example of an intervening event. If a different scene plays and the Dark Urge murder has not yet occurred, do not assume Alfira is permanently safe. Check her status again before later long rests.
When to repeat the knockout
The documented workaround may require knocking Alfira out more than once, especially in Honour Mode. Repeat the precaution before a later rest if the scene was delayed and Alfira has recovered or is available again. This is a cautious practice, not a promise that repeating the action forces a particular event order; the game’s camp queue can still determine which scene occurs first.
A practical save strategy
Make a manual save before the rest that you believe will trigger the scene. Then confirm the outcome after the camp sequence. If Alfira appears despite your preparation, or if a different event intervenes, you can return to that point and reassess her status. Treat this as a player-controlled safety measure rather than an officially guaranteed reset behavior.
What happens to Quil Grootslang
Quil is not a harmless placeholder and not an alternate way to finish the scene without a victim. When Alfira is unavailable, Quil takes Alfira’s place in the Dark Urge event. The murder sequence therefore remains intact, with Quil serving as the replacement victim.

| Your setup at the relevant rest | Who appears in the scene | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Alfira is available | Alfira | The scripted event targets Alfira. |
| Alfira is unconscious and unavailable | Quil Grootslang | Alfira is preserved for later play, but Quil becomes the victim. |
| Alfira was attacked lethally | Alfira is dead before the substitution check | The intended rescue has failed; a lethal attack is not the non-lethal workaround. |
| A different camp event occurs first | Depends on the queued scene | Recheck Alfira before the next rest if the Dark Urge scene has not happened. |
This tradeoff should shape your decision before you start. The method is appropriate for a player who wants Alfira’s later presence or story content and accepts Quil’s replacement role. It is not a no-death solution.
Troubleshooting common failed attempts
“I refused Alfira’s invitation, but she still appeared.”
That is expected. The event is connected to Dark Urge progression and the long rest, not simply to accepting an invitation. Refusal does not remove Alfira from the scene’s eligibility check. Use the knockout method instead.
“I turned on Non-Lethal Attacks, but Alfira died.”
Check the damage source. The non-lethal setting does not convert spell damage into knockout damage. Reload a save from before the attack if you have one, enable the passive, and use a melee attack. Confirm the unconscious status before resting.

“I knocked her out, but the scene has not happened.”
A different camp event may have taken priority. The bard scene can be delayed by other events, including the Karlach-before-Wyll recruitment order cited by the BG3 Wiki. Leave Alfira unavailable for the relevant later rest, and repeat the precaution if she becomes available again.
“Quil appeared. Did the method fail?”
No. Quil appearing is the documented sign that Alfira was unavailable when the scene was selected. The method preserved Alfira by redirecting the scripted victim, but it did not prevent the murder event.
“I knocked Alfira out earlier, and she is standing again.”
Because event timing can be complicated, an earlier knockout may not cover every later rest. Before the next likely trigger, verify her status and repeat the non-lethal melee setup if necessary. In Honour Mode, this extra check is especially prudent.
“Can I use this trick to save other NPCs?”
Do not generalize from Alfira. Knocked-out characters are generally treated as dead in many parts of the game. This survival method relies on the Dark Urge event selecting a replacement when Alfira is unavailable; other quests and scenes may not perform that substitution.

Patch 7’s temporary Alfira party behavior
Patch 7 added a separate, narrow interaction: when playing as the Dark Urge, inviting Alfira can allow her to join the party temporarily as a controllable character if there is room in the party setup. Larian’s patch notes describe this as a controllable temporary joining, not as permanent recruitment.

That feature is distinct from the rescue method in this guide. Temporary control does not by itself prevent the scripted camp event, and knocking Alfira unconscious to trigger Quil does not turn her into a permanent companion. Think of them as two different Patch 7-era behaviors:
- Temporary control: Alfira can briefly join as a controllable character under the stated invitation and party-space conditions.
- Event substitution: Alfira is made unavailable before the triggering rest, causing Quil to appear instead.
Do not confuse an invitation, a temporary party slot, and survival through the Dark Urge scene. They affect different parts of the game’s scripting.
What the patch situation means for current runs
Larian described Patch 8 as the final major patch and said later work would be limited to minor bug fixing. The published notes do not establish whether a later minor fix changed this specific Alfira-and-Quil interaction. For a current run, follow the sequence above, verify Alfira’s unconscious status, and keep a save before the rest if the result matters to your playthrough.

That qualification is important because event queues and edge cases can vary by build. The documented behavior supports the knockout-and-substitution method, but it does not provide a universal guarantee for every platform, save state, or combination of camp events.

You do not need to stop exploring or recruiting companions once you reach the point where the Dark Urge scene can occur. The important planning rule is to treat each long rest as a possible event-resolution point. If you recruit Karlach, meet Wyll, or trigger another camp conversation before the murder scene, allow that event to finish and then reassess Alfira before resting again.
For a careful run, keep Alfira’s location in mind while you complete daytime objectives. Return to the Emerald Grove before the rest you intend to use for the Dark Urge scene, enable the passive with the character who will make the attack, and verify the unconscious condition immediately afterward. This reduces the chance that travel, a second combat, or an intervening conversation leaves you assuming she is still unavailable when she is not.
There is no competing method in which refusing dialogue, avoiding the Grove, or simply waiting prevents the scripted victim selection. The meaningful comparison is timing and damage type: a correctly timed non-lethal melee knockout causes the substitution; a lethal or magical attack does not. The consequence remains the same whenever the substitution succeeds—Quil fills the victim role.

- You have progressed to the point where the Dark Urge event may be selected after crossing toward the Blighted Village.
- You are in the Emerald Grove with Alfira.
- Non-Lethal Attacks is visibly enabled.
- You used melee damage, not spell damage.
- Alfira is confirmed unconscious and unavailable.
- You understand that Quil, not nobody, will fill the victim role.
- You have a pre-rest save if the run is in Honour Mode or the outcome is important.
If every item is true, take the long rest. The expected result is Alfira’s survival and Quil’s substitution in the scripted Dark Urge scene.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to talk to Alfira before knocking her out?
No. The scene can occur whether or not you have spoken with her or accepted an invitation. What matters is that she is unavailable when the relevant Dark Urge long rest is resolved.
When exactly should I knock Alfira unconscious?
Do it in the Emerald Grove before taking the rest associated with the event. If another camp scene delays the murder, check her status again and repeat the precaution before a later rest if necessary.
Can a spell knock Alfira out safely if Non-Lethal Attacks is active?
No. Spell damage can kill her despite the passive. Use a qualifying melee attack and verify that she is actually unconscious.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does refusing Alfira’s invitation save her?
No. Refusing the invitation does not remove her from the Dark Urge event’s eligibility check. You must make her unavailable before the triggering rest.
Who is Quil Grootslang?
Quil is the replacement bard used by the scripted scene when Alfira is unavailable. Her appearance means the event was redirected, not cancelled, and Quil becomes the victim.
Can I save both Alfira and Quil?
This workaround does not save both. It preserves Alfira by substituting Quil, so the scene still contains a victim.
Why did Alfira recover after I knocked her out?
An earlier knockout may not cover a later rest if another camp event intervenes or the game’s event queue delays the scene. Confirm her condition again and repeat the non-lethal melee setup before the next likely trigger.
Does Patch 7 make Alfira a permanent companion?
No. Patch 7 allows a narrow, temporary situation in which an invited Alfira can join as a controllable character if there is room in the party. That behavior is separate from saving her through event substitution.
Will this knockout trick protect other NPCs?
Do not assume so. The game often treats knocked-out characters as dead elsewhere. Alfira’s survival depends on this particular Dark Urge scene having a replacement victim.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Before the Dark Urge’s triggering long rest, turn on Non-Lethal Attacks and use a melee attack to leave Alfira unconscious in the Emerald Grove. If the scene fires, Quil Grootslang replaces her and dies instead. Repeat the check after intervening camp events, especially in Honour Mode, and remember that Patch 7’s temporary party behavior is not permanent recruitment.
