The dependable way to keep a WhatsApp Status video is to save it while the Status is still visible. On Android, view the video first and copy its cached file from WhatsApp’s hidden .Statuses folder with a file manager. On iPhone, use the built-in screen recorder while the video plays, then trim the recording in Photos. You can also try WhatsApp Web on a computer, although browser controls vary. These methods preserve either a cached copy or a recording of playback—not necessarily the original upload file or its original quality.
Act before the 24-hour window closes
WhatsApp describes Status as a place to share photos and videos that “disappear from view after 24 hours.” Once that window ends, the Status may no longer be available to view, so saving it is a time-sensitive task. Open the Status and make sure the complete video plays before attempting any method below. If the video has already expired, the techniques in this guide cannot make it reappear.

A Status being visible to you does not automatically give you permission to republish it. Treat the copy as someone else’s content, ask the person who posted it before forwarding or reposting it, and respect any audience limits they selected.

What “saving” a Status video actually preserves
There are two different outcomes:
- A cached-media copy: On some Android phones, WhatsApp temporarily stores a viewed Status in a hidden media directory. Copying that file can preserve the delivered video as a normal file.
- A screen recording: On iPhone, the built-in recorder captures the video as it plays on the display. The result is a new recording, not an extraction of the original file.
WhatsApp also says that Status uploads may be lower quality than the original media. Therefore, even a successful Android copy can reflect WhatsApp’s processed Status version rather than the creator’s source video. A screen recording can introduce additional quality loss, changed dimensions, or playback artifacts. Save the file for personal reference with those limits in mind.

Save a WhatsApp Status video on Android
The Android procedure below comes from an independent tutorial, not an official WhatsApp export command. It relies on WhatsApp having downloaded the Status for viewing and on your file manager allowing access to Android’s media directories.
Before you start
- Open WhatsApp and play the entire Status video at least once. The tutorial says the file appears in the cache only after you view the Status.
- Keep the Status available while you work. If it expires before you copy it, the cached item may no longer be usable.
- Use the phone’s existing file manager. Menu names differ among manufacturers, so look for options such as Internal storage, Android, media, or Show hidden files.
Copy the cached video
- Open WhatsApp and select the Updates or Status area, depending on the label shown in your app.
- Tap the person’s Status and let the target video play. If there are several Status posts, identify the exact clip you want before leaving WhatsApp.
- Open your file manager and choose Internal storage.
- Navigate to
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses. - If
.Statusesis not visible, open the file manager’s settings or overflow menu and enable Show hidden files (the wording varies). - Look for the recently viewed video. Use the file manager’s preview or sort-by-date option if several items are present.
- Long-press the video, choose Copy, and select a normal folder such as Movies, Videos, or a folder you create for saved Status clips.
- Open the destination folder and confirm that the copy is present. Play it from that folder before deleting anything from the cache.
If the Android folder is missing
Do not assume that the person did not post a video. First verify that you actually watched the clip, then refresh the file manager and check that hidden files are enabled. Android releases and phone makers can change how the Android/media area is displayed. Some file managers expose the directory directly; others restrict access or use a different navigation screen. The tutorial’s path is a practical reference, not a promise that every current device will show the same folders.
If you can see Android/media but not com.whatsapp, confirm that the phone is using the standard WhatsApp app storage and that you are browsing internal storage rather than an SD card. Avoid renaming or moving WhatsApp’s own folders while troubleshooting; copy only the individual video you need.

How to identify the right file
The hidden folder can contain more than one recent Status. Compare thumbnails, file sizes, and modified times, then open the candidate with the phone’s video player. A copied file that plays from the destination folder is independent of the hidden cache location, so you can organize it normally afterward. If it will not play, copy the item again rather than editing or renaming the original cache entry first.

Save a WhatsApp Status video on iPhone
iOS does not provide the same file-manager route described for Android. The iPhone-specific approach is to record the Status as it plays, then trim the resulting clip in Photos. This captures playback; it does not recover the original upload file.
Add Screen Recording to Control Center
- Open Settings and go to Control Center.
- Find Screen Recording and add it to the included controls if it is not already there. Apple’s labels and layout can vary by iOS version.
- Return to WhatsApp and locate the Status video while it is still available.
Record the video
- Open Control Center using the gesture appropriate to your iPhone model.
- Tap the Screen Recording control. A short countdown gives you time to return to the Status.
- Play the Status from the beginning. Keep the phone steady and avoid touching the screen during playback.
- When the video ends, stop recording from the status indicator or Control Center.
- Open Photos and locate the new screen-recording clip.
Trim and keep the useful portion
- In Photos, tap Edit on the recording.
- Drag the start and end handles to remove the countdown, Control Center footage, or extra playback.
- Save the trimmed version. Keep the original recording if you may need to re-edit it, or delete it only after checking the trimmed copy.
The final file may include the dimensions of your iPhone display rather than the source video’s dimensions. It can also look softer than the playback because it was encoded again as a recording. That is expected for this method and is different from downloading an original media file.
Try WhatsApp Web on a computer
An independent tutorial reports a third option: link WhatsApp Web to your phone, open the Status in the browser, and use the browser’s available save control. This can be convenient when you want to move a file directly into a computer folder, but availability and menu labels vary.
General workflow
- Open the official WhatsApp Web site in a desktop browser.
- On your phone, open WhatsApp’s linked-devices screen and follow the on-screen process to link the browser session.
- In WhatsApp Web, open the Status area and play the target video while it remains available.
- Look for the current browser or WhatsApp Web options associated with the media. If a save or download control is presented, choose it and select a destination folder.
- Open the saved file on the computer to confirm that it contains the complete video.
Do not treat this as a guaranteed built-in download feature. WhatsApp Web’s interface can change, and a control that appears for one account, browser, or media type may not appear for another. If no save option is shown, use the Android or iPhone method instead of installing an unknown browser extension or third-party downloader.

Quality, file type, and completeness checks
Before you remove the original context or share a saved copy, check four things:
- Length: Play from the first second to the last. A recording that starts late or ends early is incomplete.
- Orientation: Confirm that the saved clip has the same portrait or landscape orientation as the Status.
- Audio and picture: Check that the parts you care about are present. A screen recording preserves what was played, not an untouched source track.
- Location: Move the file from a temporary cache or Downloads folder into a clearly named personal folder and back it up only if you have permission.
Do not promise yourself original quality simply because the file extension looks familiar. WhatsApp’s own guidance notes that Status media may be lower quality than the original upload, and a screen recording adds another processing step.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The Status has disappeared
WhatsApp’s product rule is a 24-hour visibility period. If the post is no longer visible, these procedures cannot restore it. Ask the person who posted it to send the video directly if you are allowed to keep it.
The Android folder has no video
Return to WhatsApp, view the exact Status again, and then reopen the file manager. Check Internal storage and enable hidden files. Confirm that you are using the path Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Statuses, while recognizing that a particular Android release or manufacturer may present the folders differently. If the file still does not appear, the cache may be inaccessible on that device.

You copied the wrong Android item
Use the video preview, modified time, thumbnail, and playback length to distinguish multiple recent Status files. Copy the matching item to a normal folder and test it there. Do not rely solely on an opaque filename.
The iPhone recording contains extra footage
Open the recording in Photos and trim the beginning and end. If you recorded Control Center or a countdown, those seconds can be removed without changing the rest of the clip. Keep the untrimmed original until the edited copy plays correctly.
The browser method has no save option
WhatsApp Web behavior is not uniform across browsers and app versions. Make sure the Status is still available and that you are viewing it in the linked session. If the interface still offers no usable save control, switch to the device-specific method rather than relying on an extension or untrusted downloader.

WhatsApp lets users choose who can see their Status. Visibility is an audience setting, not a blanket license to redistribute the content. Before forwarding, posting elsewhere, editing, or adding the clip to a public archive, ask the creator and follow any restrictions they give you.
Built-in tools are preferable here because they avoid granting a new app access to your messages, photos, storage, or contacts. Be cautious with “Status saver” applications that request broad permissions, require a separate account, or promise to bypass WhatsApp controls. The core Android, iPhone, and computer methods do not require such an app.
Do not confuse Status with View Once media
A normal Status is a temporary post shown to selected viewers. View Once is a separate setting for media sent in a chat. WhatsApp’s View Once guidance says recipients cannot forward, copy, save, star, or share photos, voice messages, or videos sent or received with View Once enabled.
This guide does not provide a way around those View Once restrictions. If someone sent a View Once video in a chat, respect that design and ask the sender to provide a regular copy if they want you to keep it. The Android cache procedure and iPhone screen-recording procedure described above concern an ordinary Status, not permission to defeat View Once protections.

- Is the Status still visible? If not, request a direct copy from the person who posted it.
- Are you on Android? View the video, then try the hidden
.Statusesfolder and copy the file to a normal directory. - Are you on iPhone? Start Screen Recording, play the complete Status, stop recording, and trim it in Photos.
- Do you have a computer? WhatsApp Web may offer a browser save control after linking, but treat that as a variable workaround.
- Do you intend to share it? Ask the poster first, even if you could technically save the file.
- Is quality critical? Request the original video directly; a Status copy or screen recording may already be lower quality than the upload.
The practical answer
Save the video while it is playing and choose the method that matches your device: copy the viewed cache on Android, record playback on iPhone, or test the current WhatsApp Web controls on a computer. Verify the resulting file, understand that it may not be original quality, and obtain permission before sharing it beyond your own private reference.
