On Windows 10 or 11, capture the webpage with Snipping Tool, open the capture in Paint, then save a new copy in JPEG/JPG format if that option is available. Changing a PNG file’s extension to .jpg does not convert it; verify the saved file’s format and keep the PNG if the JPEG looks soft.
Save a website screenshot as JPEG in Windows 10 or 11
- Open the website and arrange the page as you want it to appear. Scroll to the relevant content if you only need part of the page.
- Press Windows key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Choose the desired snip—such as rectangular, window, or full-screen—and capture the page. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions cover the shortcut and capture options.
- Open the capture in Snipping Tool, then select Edit > Edit with Paint.
- In Paint, open the save or Save As format choices. Select JPEG or JPG if offered, choose a destination, and save under a new filename. The exact menu wording and available formats can vary by Windows and Paint version.
- Check that the new file is a JPEG. Its extension should be .jpg or .jpeg; changing the name of a PNG to use one of those extensions is not conversion.
Confirm the file extension in File Explorer
Windows may hide extensions, so a file can appear to have a .jpg name while its actual extension is still .png. In File Explorer, select View > Show > File name extensions. Then inspect the end of the filename. Microsoft’s file-extension reference identifies .jpg and .jpeg as JPEG image extensions and .png as the PNG extension.

Choose JPEG or keep PNG?
JPEG is suited to colorful pictures, while PNG supports transparency and can be a better fit for graphics. A webpage screenshot often contains small text, icons, and sharp interface edges, so inspect the saved JPEG before deleting the PNG original. If text edges look soft or show artifacts, keep or save a PNG copy instead. These format differences are qualitative; the Microsoft format guidance does not quantify file-size or quality changes for this specific screenshot workflow. See Microsoft’s image-format guidance.
