For a normal webpage, Chrome can create a PDF without any extension: open the page, choose Print, select Save as PDF, review the preview, and save. Install an extension when you need a true full-page capture, only one element, or a cleaned-up article view.
Save a webpage as a PDF with Chrome’s built-in tool
Chrome’s native print workflow is the simplest option and requires no installation.
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Open Chrome’s print dialog from the browser menu’s Print command, or use your operating system’s print shortcut.
- In the destination or printer list, choose Save as PDF.
- Check the preview. Select the available paper size, orientation, margins, scale, background-graphics option, and page range that suit the page.
- Click Save, choose a folder and filename, then confirm.
Chrome’s labels and the arrangement of print settings can vary by Chrome version and operating system. The preview is important: many websites provide a separate print stylesheet, so the PDF may not look identical to the screen.
When the built-in method is enough
- You want a conventional printable copy.
- The page already prints in the right order.
- You do not need to remove a sidebar, cookie notice, newsletter form, or chat widget.
- You are happy with Chrome’s ordinary pagination and print controls.
When a Chrome extension is the better choice
An extension is useful when the page needs a different capture mode than ordinary printing. A current Chrome Web Store example, Web to PDF – Save Webpage as PDF, lists three workflows: full-page export, selected-element export, and clean-article mode. Its listing also describes controls for paper size, orientation, margins, and layout, followed by preview, printing, or downloading.

The extension says it uses Chromium’s built-in print engine. That means the result still depends on the webpage’s print CSS, loaded resources, and the browser’s rendering. The listing’s claims about preserving text, links, images, and styling should be treated as feature descriptions rather than an independent guarantee.
Full-page export
Choose this when the page continues below the viewport and the ordinary print output omits content or breaks it awkwardly. Full-page mode may need time to load lazy images and other content. Scroll through the generated preview before downloading.
Selected-element export
Use this when you need one article, table, product description, or documentation panel instead of the entire page. Verify that headings, images, tables, and links inside the selected element are present.
Clean-article mode
This mode is intended for a reading copy with less navigation and page furniture. It can be useful for long articles, but inspect the result for missing captions, embedded media, footnotes, tables, or interactive code examples.

Step-by-step: use a Chrome PDF extension
- Open the target webpage and let its main content finish loading.
- Click the Extensions button in Chrome’s toolbar, then open the PDF extension.
- Choose Full page, Selected element, or Clean article, depending on what you need.
- If the extension offers them, set paper size, orientation, margins, scale, and layout.
- Start the conversion and wait for the preview. Do not close the tab while images or other lazy-loaded resources are still appearing.
- Inspect every page. Check the first and last page, page breaks, images, tables, links, headers, footers, and any selected-content boundaries.
- Choose the extension’s preview, print, or download action and save the PDF with a descriptive filename.
Make the PDF easier to read and share
Prepare the page first
- Dismiss overlays that cover the content, if the site permits it.
- Expand accordions or “read more” sections that must appear in the PDF.
- Wait for images and embedded content to load.
- For a selected export, identify the exact article or container element before opening the extension.
Choose layout settings deliberately
Portrait usually suits articles; landscape can prevent wide tables from being split. Smaller margins create more usable space but can make printed pages harder to annotate. If backgrounds are essential to a diagram or design, enable background graphics when Chrome or the extension exposes that setting.
Check links and text
A good PDF should retain selectable text where the source is text, and links should remain usable when the exporter supports them. Zoom into small type and test a few links in the saved file. A visual match is not proof that the underlying text or link structure survived.
Extension safety and permissions
Review the extension’s current Chrome Web Store listing before installation. Check its publisher, update date, stated permissions, privacy disclosures, supported modes, and user feedback. Chrome’s Enhanced protection can warn when an extension is not trusted; Google describes trusted extensions as those made by developers who follow Chrome Web Store Developer Programme Policies. Treat that warning or trust label as one input, not as a substitute for reading the listing and deciding whether the requested permissions fit the task.
Prefer an extension that requests access only to pages you intend to convert. Remove it when you no longer need it, or disable site access except on specific sites if Chrome offers that control.

Common problems and fixes
The PDF contains only the visible portion
Cause: ordinary print pagination or an extension mode that is not full-page. Fix: choose the extension’s full-page mode, wait for the page to finish loading, and verify the preview from beginning to end.
Images are missing or blank
Cause: lazy loading, blocked resources, slow network requests, or images that appear only after scrolling. Fix: reload, wait longer, scroll through the page once, and run the export again. If the image is loaded by an embedded viewer or script, the exporter may not be able to reproduce it.
The layout is broken or text is cut off
Cause: the site’s print stylesheet, wide elements, fixed-position components, or an unsuitable paper orientation. Fix: try landscape, adjust scale and margins, switch between full-page and clean-article modes, or use Chrome’s native preview to compare results.
A cookie banner, popup, or chat panel appears in the PDF
Cause: the overlay was still active when the page was captured. Fix: close it before exporting, select only the article element, or use a capture service that removes common consent and widget layers before rendering.

The extension does not appear or cannot access the page
Cause: the extension is disabled, its site permission is restricted, or Chrome blocks extensions on internal pages such as settings screens. Fix: open Chrome’s Extensions management page, enable the extension, review its site-access setting, and use it on a normal web URL.
The saved file has the wrong pages or order
Cause: a page range, print break, or dynamic section changed during capture. Fix: clear the page-range restriction, allow the page to settle, and inspect the preview before saving again.
