To save a webpage as a paginated PDF, use your browser’s print dialog and choose Save to PDF. SingleFileZ saves a different kind of copy: a self-contained webpage archive in an HTML/ZIP-style format, not a PDF. Choose print-to-PDF when you need a document; choose SingleFile-style archiving when you want to browse a saved page and its resources offline.

What SingleFileZ saves—and what it does not
SingleFileZ is for preserving a webpage as a self-contained, browsable copy, not for producing a paginated PDF. Its listed workflow is to wait for the page to finish loading, then click the extension’s toolbar button to save it. Its context menu also offers options for selected content, frames, links, and multiple tabs. The result is an HTML/ZIP hybrid archive; it is not interchangeable with a PDF.

The SingleFileZ project says SingleFileZ has been merged into SingleFile and points users to SingleFile’s file-format setting for self-extracting files. The Firefox add-on listing describes SingleFileZ’s workflow and output, but its last-update date is February 15, 2024; that date alone does not establish current support or compatibility.
Choose the right format for your goal
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A paginated file to read, share, or print | Browser print-to-PDF | It produces a PDF and lets you adjust pages, paper size, scale, margins, and other print settings. |
| A local copy of the webpage with its resources | SingleFile or its self-extracting format | It preserves a webpage as an offline page rather than laying it out as a document. |
| A saved copy that must open without an extension | Check the chosen format and target browser first | Self-extracting archive behavior depends on file format and browser; some local-file workflows have extra requirements. |
| A PDF that must match the website’s screen layout exactly | Neither output guarantees that result | Print styles can alter a page, while an archived webpage remains a webpage rather than a paginated document. |
Using SingleFile-style archives offline
SingleFile’s README lists compatibility with Chrome, Firefox desktop and mobile, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Waterfox, Yandex Browser, and Opera. That list does not mean every saved archive opens identically in every browser. The format matters: a self-extracting file may require JavaScript, and the SingleFileZ FAQ says Chrome may need the extension or a command-line switch to view saved files from the local filesystem.
Before relying on an archive for offline access, save a test page in the format you intend to use and open it in the browser and environment where it will be needed. The project’s SingleFile README compares formats, and the SingleFileZ project documents its migration to SingleFile.

Privacy and extension permissions
The SingleFileZ FAQ says, “SingleFileZ does not upload any data to third-party servers,” and describes saving as work done in the browser. It also notes that saving can download page resources that are present but not displayed or cached. Separately, Mozilla’s add-on listing shows permissions including access to data for all websites, access to browser tabs, and downloads. Consider both the project’s local-processing statement and the breadth of permissions when deciding whether to install it.

The saved file is a webpage archive, not a PDF
That is the expected SingleFileZ output. Use the browser’s print preview and choose Save to PDF when you need a PDF.
The PDF looks different from the page on screen
Check the print preview, orientation, scale, margins, background printing, and whether simplified or original formatting is selected. A site’s print layout may intentionally differ from its screen layout.

The saved archive does not open from the local filesystem
Check which file format you saved and consult the format’s browser-specific requirements. For example, the SingleFileZ FAQ notes that Chrome may require the extension or a command-line switch to view saved files locally; self-extracting formats can also depend on JavaScript.
The archived page is missing content
Wait until the page has fully loaded before saving, then try again. Some resources may be loaded later or may not be available to the browser when the archive is created; the FAQ notes that saving can fetch resources that are present but not displayed or cached.
You cannot find the old SingleFileZ option
The project says SingleFileZ has been merged into SingleFile. Check SingleFile’s file-format settings for the self-extracting-file option rather than assuming SingleFileZ remains a separately maintained extension.

If you need a clean website screenshot rather than a paginated document or offline webpage archive, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Its GET endpoint returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and can remove cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. A free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Its MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for compatible AI clients.
