Mozilla’s documented download is an image using a .png filename, not a direct JPG export. To get a JPG, save the Firefox screenshot first, then open that PNG in an image editor or converter and export it as JPEG.
Save a webpage as a JPG in Firefox
- Open the page you want to capture in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose the capture mode you need: Save full page for the complete scrollable page, Save visible for the current viewport, or drag over a region. Firefox can also automatically highlight a page element for selection.
- Select Download. Firefox saves the image in its default download folder. Mozilla’s example filename ends in
.png. - Open the downloaded PNG in an image editor or image converter, choose Export or Save As, select JPEG/JPG, set the desired quality, and save the new file.
The last step is necessary because Mozilla’s current screenshot instructions document PNG output rather than a JPG setting. That describes the published Firefox workflow; an extension or a future Firefox release could offer additional formats.

Full webpage
Save full page captures content below the fold in one tall image. It is useful for documentation, design review, archiving a landing page, or sharing a complete article. Lazy-loaded content may need time to appear before you open the screenshot tool; scroll through the page once if sections are still loading.
Visible viewport
Save visible records only what is currently shown in the browser window. Use it for a dashboard state, an error message, or a design detail where a long image would be inconvenient.

Selected region
Drag around an exact area to exclude browser clutter, advertisements, or unrelated content. The selection is still an image capture and will be downloaded as PNG before conversion.
Automatically detected element
Move the pointer over the page and Firefox can highlight an element such as a card, image, heading, or content block. Select it when you need a component without manually estimating its boundaries.
Convert Firefox’s PNG to JPG
Windows
- Right-click the downloaded PNG and choose Open with > Paint.
- Choose File > Save as > JPEG picture.
- Pick a filename and location, then select Save.
Paint may ask you to confirm that JPEG can reduce image quality or remove transparency. Confirm if JPG is required.
macOS
- Open the PNG in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Set Format to JPEG, adjust the quality slider if needed, and click Save.
Linux
Open the PNG in an installed editor such as GNOME Image Viewer, KDE’s image viewer, GIMP, or another converter. Use its Export command and choose JPEG. Desktop labels differ by distribution, but the format choice is the same.

Online converters
An online converter can work for non-sensitive pages, but uploading a screenshot may disclose private text, account information, or customer data. For confidential material, use a local editor. If you do use a web converter, check the service’s retention and deletion policy before uploading.
JPG settings that affect the result
- Quality: Higher quality preserves text and edges but creates a larger file. For screenshots containing small type, start near the high end and inspect the result at 100% zoom.
- Transparency: JPEG does not support transparent backgrounds. Transparent pixels are usually flattened onto a solid color during export.
- Text sharpness: Repeated JPEG re-saving introduces compression artifacts around letters and icons. Keep the original PNG and create the JPG from that original rather than from an already compressed JPG.
- Dimensions: Conversion normally keeps the PNG’s pixel dimensions. Resize only after conversion if a site or document requires a specific width or height.
- Color: If an editor offers a color-profile option, use its standard web-compatible setting unless a print workflow specifies something else.
Do not confuse screenshots with other Firefox save commands
Save Page As
Save Page As stores the webpage itself: a complete page with supporting files, HTML only, text, or all files. It preserves page resources for later reading or editing, not a single JPG image. Choose it when you need the document structure, not a visual snapshot.
Save Image As
Right-clicking an image already displayed on a page and choosing Save Image As downloads that individual source image. It does not capture the surrounding webpage, browser-rendered text, or the page’s current layout.
Print opens print preview and can save the shown preview as PDF. Print styles can rearrange, omit, or restyle content, so this is a document/PDF workflow rather than a screenshot-to-JPG workflow.

When the screenshot is blank, incomplete, or wrong
Content below the fold is missing
Use Save full page rather than Save visible. If images or sections load only while scrolling, let the page finish loading and scroll through it before capturing.
A cookie banner, popup, or chat box covers the page
Dismiss the overlay before opening Take Screenshot. If it cannot be dismissed, select a region that excludes it or use an automated capture service that can remove common overlays.
The downloaded file is PNG, not JPG
This is expected in Mozilla’s documented workflow. Do not merely rename .png to .jpg; renaming changes the filename, not the encoded image. Export the file through an editor or converter.
The screenshot shortcut does nothing
Click the webpage first, then try the shortcut again. On macOS use Command+Shift+S; on Windows and Linux use Ctrl+Shift+S. You can always open the context menu and select Take Screenshot.

Fonts or images look different
Wait until the page finishes loading, check that you are capturing the intended tab and viewport, and disable temporary zoom or responsive-design settings that change layout. A full-page capture can also differ from the viewport if the site uses sticky headers or scroll-triggered effects.
The JPG is too large
Lower JPEG quality modestly, resize the image, or crop unused space. Keep the PNG as a lossless master so you can create another JPG later without accumulating compression damage.

For repeatable captures in scripts or build systems, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API at ScreenshotNeo. A single GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can accept cookie and consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all parameters. To request a JPG, add the format option supported by the API to the request shown in the documentation. The following calls use the supplied endpoint and demonstrate the standard request shape:

FAQ
Can I change Firefox’s screenshot extension from PNG to JPG?
Mozilla’s current published screenshot instructions show PNG output and do not document a direct JPG export control. Convert the downloaded PNG unless an installed extension provides its own format option.
Will converting PNG to JPG make a webpage searchable?
No. Both files are raster images. Text remains pixels, so copy-and-paste and browser search do not work on the screenshot unless you run separate OCR.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I submit when a website asks for a “JPG screenshot”?
Capture the required area in Firefox, export the PNG as JPEG, verify the resulting filename ends in .jpg or .jpeg, and check the site’s maximum file-size and dimension rules before uploading.
