WebP can mean three different things: the WebP image a site already serves, a screenshot of an entire web page saved as WebP, or a conversion of an existing PNG/JPEG file. Choose the workflow that matches your goal. Firefox can save a page’s source image directly; its screenshot tool can capture a full scrolling page (usually as PNG); and Google’s cwebp utility can convert that PNG or a JPEG into a real .webp file. A browser archive created with “Web page, complete” is not a WebP image.
First decide what you want to save
| Goal | Best method | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Download one image already displayed on a site | Right-click the image and use Save Image As | The image resource delivered by the site, often WebP |
| Create one visual image of a whole page | Use Firefox Take Screenshot, choose Full Page, then convert if necessary | A fixed screenshot, with no editable HTML structure |
| Keep an offline, navigable copy | Firefox Save Page As > Web page, complete | An HTML file and an asset folder, not one WebP image |
| Convert a PNG or JPEG you already downloaded | Run cwebp or use an image editor |
A newly encoded WebP file |
Save an image the page already serves
- Open the page in Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Safari, or another browser.
- Right-click the specific image. If a menu appears for a surrounding link, open the image in a new tab first and right-click it there.
- Choose Save Image As (the wording can vary slightly by browser).
- Select a folder and save. Check the resulting filename and, if needed, its type in the file’s properties.
The saved format is the resource returned by the website. Modern browsers advertise supported formats in the HTTP Accept request header. When that header includes image/webp, an image server may return a WebP alternative even when the page’s markup or visible URL appears to reference a JPEG or PNG. Native WebP support is available in current Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and many other tools.
When “Save Image As” does not save the picture you see
- CSS background: the visual may be a background rather than an
<img>. Use a screenshot, or inspect the page in developer tools to locate the background resource. - Lazy-loaded image: scroll it into view and wait for it to finish loading before saving.
- Protected viewer: a canvas, image viewer, or cross-origin setup may prevent direct saving. A screenshot captures what is rendered, subject to the site’s terms and applicable law.
- Several responsive variants: the browser may receive a size chosen for your viewport rather than the original, full-resolution asset.
Capture a complete web page as an image in Firefox
Use this route when you need one visual file showing the page, rather than the page’s HTML and assets.
- Open the page and let dynamic content finish loading. Scroll through it once if images are lazy-loaded.
- Right-click an empty area and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- In the screenshot toolbar, choose Full Page for the entire scrollable document. You can instead select a region, a highlighted page section, or the visible portion.
- Download the result. Firefox commonly produces a PNG screenshot.
- If you need WebP specifically, convert that PNG with
cwebpas shown below.
What a full-page screenshot captures
- It records the rendered appearance, including fonts, colors, layout, and loaded media.
- It does not preserve links, selectable text, semantic HTML, animations, or editable page structure.
- Content hidden behind tabs, accordions, cookie dialogs, login walls, or viewport-triggered interactions may not appear unless you open or dismiss it first.
- Very long pages can create large images. A browser may limit dimensions or memory use; capture sections separately if the page is exceptionally tall.
Convert PNG or JPEG to WebP with cwebp
Google’s reference WebP tools include cwebp, which accepts PNG and JPEG input. After installing the WebP command-line tools for your operating system, run:

cwebp -q 80 image.png -o image.webp
The -q value controls lossy quality from 0 to 100. A value of 80 is a practical starting point, not a guarantee of a particular file size or visual result. For a JPEG source, substitute its filename:
cwebp -q 80 photo.jpg -o photo.webp
For lossless output, use:
cwebp -lossless image.png -o image.webp
Lossless mode preserves pixel data but can create a larger file than a lossy encode. WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. Google’s 2025 documentation reports that lossless WebP can be about 26% smaller than PNG and lossy WebP about 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG at equivalent quality; those are comparative documentation figures, not a promise for every file.
Check or reverse a conversion
To decode a WebP back to PNG, use:
dwebp image.webp -o image.png
Open both files and compare fine text, gradients, transparency, and edges. Screenshots containing small type often need a higher quality setting than photographs.

Why a JPG download can become WebP
A filename or page URL does not always identify the bytes you receive. During HTTP content negotiation, your browser sends an Accept header listing formats it can decode. If the server sees image/webp, it can return a WebP representation selected by device, viewport, or image-optimization rules. The browser then saves the delivered representation, which may have a .webp extension or a generic download name.

This is normal format negotiation, not a file-renaming trick. To confirm the actual type, inspect the file properties or open it in an image application that reports its codec.
Do not confuse “Save Page As” with a WebP screenshot
Firefox’s Save Page As menu includes Web page, complete, Web page, HTML only, Text files, and All files. Web page, complete writes an HTML document plus a directory containing pictures, stylesheets, scripts, and other assets. It is useful for offline reference, but it remains a collection of web files. It is not a single WebP image and may not reproduce server-side behavior, authenticated content, or every dynamic interaction.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so you can request a WebP full-page capture directly instead of configuring a browser. It can accept cookie and consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
See the complete parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A minimal cURL request is:

Troubleshooting WebP saves and conversions
The file is PNG, not WebP
Firefox’s screenshot download is commonly PNG. Convert it with cwebp -q 80 screenshot.png -o screenshot.webp; changing the extension alone does not encode a new format.
The WebP file is larger than the original
This can happen when converting a lossy source to lossless WebP, converting a lossless source to lossy WebP under unsuitable settings, or choosing a target quality higher than the source effectively contains. Try a lower -q value, compare visually, and avoid repeated lossy conversions.

The full page is incomplete
Dismiss overlays, sign in where authorized, wait for network activity to settle, and scroll through the page to trigger lazy loading before taking the screenshot. If the browser cannot render the page reliably, an API capture with selector waits, network-idle waits, custom headers, or cookies can provide the required setup.
The command is not found
Install the WebP/libwebp command-line package for your operating system, reopen the terminal if necessary, and verify that cwebp is on your executable path. Running cwebp -version should confirm availability.
Which workflow should you use?
- Choose Save Image As when you need the site’s original image resource.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a web page itself as one WebP file and keep it interactive?
No. WebP is an image format. A WebP screenshot is a fixed rendering; an interactive offline page requires HTML and its associated assets.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does converting a PNG to WebP preserve clickable links and selectable text?
No. Conversion changes pixels, not the underlying document structure. Links and text remain available only in the original page or an HTML archive.
Why is my downloaded image WebP when the page says JPG?
The server may have used HTTP content negotiation and returned a WebP representation because your browser advertised WebP support in its Accept header.
Is WebP always smaller than PNG or JPEG?
No. WebP often reduces size, but the result depends on source encoding, quality, transparency, and whether the conversion is lossy or lossless.
