PNG, HEIF and the setting that matters
PNG is a lossless image format and is widely accepted by documentation tools, bug trackers, design applications and web forms. A file ending in .png is normally a PNG, but confirm the actual format if an application has converted the image or hidden the extension.
On current supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple’s Screenshot app presents two capture choices: SDR (Most Compatible), which uses PNG, and HDR, which uses HEIF. Choose SDR whenever a recipient specifically requires PNG. Apple’s screenshot frameworks also provide a screenshot representation as PNG image data, so PNG is a native macOS screenshot representation rather than a workaround.

Save a screenshot as PNG on Windows
Capture the screen with Snipping Tool
- Open Snipping Tool from the Windows Start menu.
- Choose the capture mode you need: Rectangle, Freeform or Window.
- Capture the selected area, shape or window. The result opens in the Snipping Tool editor.
- Select Save (the disk icon) in the editor.
- In the save dialog, open the file-type menu, select PNG, choose a folder and enter a filename.
- Click Save. Open the saved file and check its extension and properties before uploading it.
Which Windows capture mode should you use?

Microsoft documents these three image modes along with screen recording, customizable capture modes and optional auto-save.
If PNG is not shown in the save dialog
Make sure you are saving the captured image from Snipping Tool’s editor rather than copying it from the clipboard. Use Save, then inspect the file-type list. If Windows hides extensions, enable File name extensions in File Explorer’s View menu so you can see whether the file really ends in .png. Do not merely rename a .jpg or another format to .png; changing the name does not convert the image.
Automatic saving on Windows
Snipping Tool has an optional auto-save capability. Microsoft says the auto-save option follows your Snipping Tool settings, so an integration that requests auto-save cannot guarantee that a file will be written automatically if you have disabled it. If a capture appears only in the editor or clipboard, open Snipping Tool’s settings, enable its save behavior, and test with a new capture. For predictable results, use the editor’s explicit Save command.
Save a screenshot as PNG on a Mac
Choose the capture and destination
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls.
- Choose Capture Entire Screen, Capture Selected Window or Capture Selected Portion.
- Open Options.
- Under the save-location choices, select Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, Preview or another available destination. Apple uses the desktop by default, but you can change it.
- If your Mac offers a format choice, select SDR (Most Compatible).
- Capture the screen. The file is saved to the destination you selected.
Why SDR is the PNG choice
Apple labels SDR as “Most Compatible” because it captures standard dynamic range using the PNG image format. The HDR option captures high dynamic range using HEIF. HDR can preserve high-dynamic-range appearance, but it is not the correct choice when a service, script or editor requires a PNG file.

Find a Mac screenshot that seems to have disappeared
Reopen Shift-Command-5 and check Options first. The selected destination controls where new files go; the default is the desktop, but it may have been changed. If you selected Clipboard, there is no new file until you paste the image into an application and save it as PNG. A window capture and a selected-area capture also produce different dimensions, so verify that you chose the intended mode before repeating the shot.

Verify that the file is really PNG
- Check that the filename ends in
.png. - Open the file’s properties or information panel and look for the type or format field.
- Open it in a second image viewer. If an upload rejects it, check the actual file type rather than changing only the extension.
- Check dimensions and scaling. A Retina or high-density display can create a larger pixel image than the on-screen point dimensions.
PNG is lossless, but it can be larger than JPEG or WebP. Keep the PNG when exact pixels, text clarity or transparency matter; convert only when the destination accepts another format and file size is the priority.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot saved as HEIF instead of PNG on Mac
Open Shift-Command-5 > Options and choose SDR (Most Compatible) before capturing again. HDR is the HEIF path.
The file has no extension
Use the file manager’s option to show filename extensions, then inspect the file type. Add an extension only after confirming the underlying format; renaming alone is not conversion.

Windows saved nothing automatically
Auto-save is optional and respects Snipping Tool settings. Enable the relevant setting or save manually from the editor.
The capture contains a popup, cookie banner or chat widget
Desktop tools capture what is visible. Close or accept overlays before capturing, or use a capture workflow that can remove them before rendering.
The image is too large to upload
Crop to the needed region, reduce pixel dimensions in an image editor, or export a compressed copy after keeping the original PNG. Do not use JPEG if the recipient specifically requires PNG.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Repeat the capture after the application has finished drawing. For a web page, wait for lazy-loaded content and animations, then capture again. A browser or security prompt may also block content that a desktop screenshot cannot access.

- Choose the correct capture scope: full screen, window or selected area.
- Choose PNG explicitly in Windows’ save dialog.
- Choose SDR (Most Compatible) on supported macOS Tahoe 26 or later.
- Set and verify the save destination before capturing.
- Confirm the actual file type instead of trusting a renamed extension.
- Keep the original PNG before making a smaller derivative.

Does taking a screenshot automatically make a PNG?
Not always. Windows uses the format selected when you save, while supported macOS Tahoe 26 or later uses PNG for SDR and HEIF for HDR.

Can I convert an existing HEIF screenshot to PNG?
Yes. Open the image in an editor or Preview and use its export or save-as command to choose PNG; simply renaming the extension does not convert it.
Where does macOS save screenshots by default?
The default destination is the desktop. Press Shift-Command-5 and use Options to choose another destination.
Can Snipping Tool capture a single application window?
Yes. Choose the Window capture mode, select the target window, and save the result as PNG.
