To save a screenshot as a JPG, capture the screen first, then use the device’s save or export command and choose JPEG/JPG as the format. Windows’ Snipping Tool can save a snip directly as JPEG. macOS usually captures PNG, so open the image in Preview and use File > Export > JPEG. iPhone screenshots are stored in Photos and need an exporter that supports JPEG when a JPG file is required.
JPG and JPEG mean the same choice
Save dialogs may label the format JPG or JPEG. For this task, they refer to the same practical image format. The important step is selecting that format in the save or export menu; simply taking a screenshot does not guarantee a JPG file.
Many devices capture in another format first. macOS, for example, commonly creates a PNG screenshot. That is normal: capture and format conversion are separate steps.
Save a screenshot as JPG in Windows 10 or Windows 11
Use Snipping Tool
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. You can also press Print Screen for a full-screen capture.
- In Snipping Tool, choose Rectangle, Freeform, Window or Full-screen mode.
- Drag over the area you want, or complete the full-screen or window capture.
- Open the notification or the Snipping Tool editor. Microsoft says a captured snip is automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window, where it can be edited, saved and shared.
- Select Save as Image or Save As.
- In the file-type or format menu, choose JPEG or JPG.
- Enter a filename, choose a folder and click Save.
Check the saved filename in File Explorer. It should end in .jpg or .jpeg.

If Print Screen only copied the image
On some Windows setups, Print Screen puts the capture on the clipboard instead of opening a save window. Open Paint or another image editor, press Ctrl + V to paste the capture, then choose File > Save As and select JPEG picture (or JPG) in the type menu. Choose the destination and save.
Choose the right capture scope
- Rectangle: select one area of the screen.
- Freeform: draw an irregular outline.
- Window: capture one application window.
- Full-screen: capture every visible display area supported by the tool.
Choosing a smaller region usually produces a more useful file when you only need one dialog, image or webpage section.
Save a screenshot as JPG on a Mac
Capture the screen
- Open the macOS Screenshot app and choose a full-screen, window or selection capture. You can also use Preview’s File > Take Screenshot commands.
- Complete the capture. macOS commonly creates a PNG file, which is its SDR/Most Compatible screenshot format.
- Open the resulting image in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- In the Format menu, select JPEG.
- Adjust the quality control if you want to change the JPEG quality, enter a filename and choose a location.
- Click Save.
Preview’s Export command creates a new JPEG copy; your original PNG remains available unless you deliberately replace it. This is safer when you may later need the lossless original.

Convert an existing screenshot
If the screenshot is already on your Mac, skip the capture step: double-click it to open Preview, then use File > Export, choose JPEG, set the destination and save. The same process converts a PNG screenshot received from someone else.

Capture and find the screenshot
- On a Face ID iPhone, quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together.
- On an iPhone with a Home button, quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears if you want to crop or mark up the image, then finish editing.
- Open Photos > Media Types > Screenshots to find the saved capture.
Create the JPG file
When you specifically need a JPG, open the screenshot in an exporter that supports JPEG. Apple’s Preview guidance describes an export workflow on supported iPhone software: choose Export, select JPEG, choose a location and save. If the app you are using only shares the image or keeps it in Photos, use an exporter that exposes JPEG as an output option rather than assuming the share action changed the format.
Keep the original in Photos until you have confirmed that the exported file opens and has the expected dimensions.

Why your screenshot is still PNG
- You stopped after capturing. A screenshot’s capture format and its final delivery format are different steps. On Mac, complete the Preview export; on Windows, complete Save As.
- You used a clipboard-only shortcut. Paste the image into Paint or another editor, then use its JPEG Save As option.
- You renamed the file but did not export it. Use the application’s format menu so the image is encoded as JPEG, rather than relying on a changed filename extension.
- The JPEG option is missing. Open the image in an editor or exporter that supports JPEG and use its export function. The capture itself may still be perfectly usable as PNG.
- You cannot find the iPhone file. Look under Photos > Media Types > Screenshots, then export a copy from there.
Quality, naming and file-management checks
Choose a clear filename
Use a name that records the subject and date, such as checkout-error-2026-09-30.jpg. Avoid repeatedly overwriting the original screenshot until you have checked the converted copy.
Verify the result
- Open the saved file from its destination folder.
- Confirm that the image contains the intended screen area and that text is readable.
- Check the filename ending:
.jpgand.jpegare both valid labels for this format. - If a website or form rejects the file, check its own size, dimension and naming requirements; those limits belong to the receiving service, not to the screenshot shortcut.

Troubleshooting website captures through the API
The response is not the image you expected
Inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. They indicate whether the page was cleanly captured and whether it was billable. A bot check, blank page, timeout or failed load is not billed.
The page contains popups or consent UI
