How you save a photo on a Samsung phone depends on where it is now and what you want to do: organize a photo already on the phone, download one from OneDrive, copy it to external storage, or protect new photos with an automatic backup. Use Gallery for albums, My Files for file locations, and the relevant cloud app for downloads or backups. Menu labels can vary by Galaxy model and software version.
Put a photo in a Gallery album
Albums organize photos stored on your phone; they do not, by themselves, create an off-device backup.

- Open Gallery and find the photo under Pictures.
- Touch and hold the photo to select it. Select additional photos if you want to organize more than one.
- Tap More, then choose Copy to album or Move to album.
- Choose the destination album. To create one, open Albums and use the add or create control.
Copy to album keeps the photo in its original album as well. Move to album relocates it. Samsung’s US guide documents these controls, but their placement may differ across software versions: Samsung Gallery album instructions.
Download a photo from OneDrive to your phone
- Open the OneDrive app and open its Gallery tab or the folder containing the photo.
- Select the photo. To select several, touch and hold the first item, then select the others.
- Tap Download. The downloaded item is stored on the device and can be found with the phone’s other photos.
Samsung says its Gallery–OneDrive sync service ended on September 30, 2026. Photos previously synced remain in OneDrive and can still be downloaded; new photos no longer sync through that discontinued Gallery integration. Downloading an existing cloud file is distinct from setting up an automatic backup for future photos. See Samsung’s OneDrive and Gallery guidance.

Back up new photos automatically
Automatic backup uploads new photos to a cloud account; it is configured in the cloud app, not by moving items between Gallery albums. Samsung documents separate setup paths for OneDrive Camera Backup and Google Photos backup.
OneDrive Camera Backup
In OneDrive, enable Camera Backup, grant access to photos and videos, and choose available upload options such as Wi-Fi-only uploads and whether to include videos. Confirm that the correct OneDrive account is selected and check backup status and available storage. Samsung describes this setup in its Galaxy and OneDrive instructions.

Google Photos backup
In Google Photos, turn on backup for the intended Google account. Available settings include Original quality and Storage saver; review mobile-data options if you do not want uploads to use cellular data. Check the app’s backup status and remaining quota. Samsung’s backup guidance describes these options.
For either service, verify the account and wait for the app to show that backup is complete. Uploads can stop when the account’s storage is full; video uploads also consume storage. Backup and sync are not identical: a backup is intended as a safety copy, while sync keeps connected locations current and may propagate changes, including deletions. Do not assume that a synced copy is an independent archive. Samsung explains the distinction in its sync and backup overview.

Copy or move camera photos with My Files
Use My Files when you want to work with the actual camera files or choose a destination such as cloud or external storage.
- Open My Files.
- Go to Internal storage > DCIM > Camera.
- Select the photo or photos.
- Choose Copy to keep the phone original, or Move to relocate the files.
- Choose the destination and confirm the action.
In Samsung’s example, moving a camera file to OneDrive removes it from internal storage; copying retains the phone file. Choose Copy if you want both a local copy and an off-device copy. Available destinations and labels can vary. Samsung demonstrates this path in its My Files instructions.

Use external storage when you need another local copy
A USB stick or hard drive may be an option if you need more space or want a copy outside the phone. Samsung notes that external storage can be connected when there is not enough free phone storage to download photo originals, but it does not establish compatibility for every Galaxy model or every drive. Check your phone’s connector and supported storage devices before buying anything. See Samsung’s external-storage guidance.

For Gallery files stored in OneDrive, Samsung says deleted items remain in the OneDrive Recycle bin for 93 days. This is a OneDrive-specific recovery period, not a rule for Google Photos or every deletion scenario. Check the relevant service’s trash or recycle area and its current retention rules before relying on recovery. See Samsung’s OneDrive recovery guidance.
