How to Save a Google Wallet Pass to Your Phone and Find It Later

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

To save a ticket, boarding pass, loyalty card, event pass or other eligible item, open it in the issuer’s app or website and tap Add to Google Wallet. Follow the prompts, choose a Wallet if Google asks, and accept the terms. If the issuer does not provide that button but the pass contains a barcode or QR code, save a clear photo of it through Wallet instead. Later, open Google Wallet and swipe up to see saved passes, or tap View more and search by the business name or another identifying word.

The exact options depend on the pass type, issuer, country or region and phone. Some passes follow your Google Account to another device, while others require a supported transfer or manual re-add.

What you need before saving a pass

Google Wallet does not accept every ticket, card or identification document. The issuer decides whether a particular item can be added directly, and Google’s Wallet features vary by country and region. A pass may also behave differently depending on the phone and the way it was issued.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The pass should come from an issuer app, website, email or image that you can open on your phone.
  • For direct saving, look for an Add to Google Wallet control supplied by the issuer.
  • For the photo method, you need a readable barcode or QR code. A blurry, cropped or reflective image may not work.
  • If you use Gmail auto-save, both Gmail’s Smart features setting and Wallet’s auto-save setting must be enabled for the relevant account.
  • Keep the original provider app, website or email available until you know that the pass is saved and usable.

Wallet can store non-payment items such as tickets, passes and IDs. It is not a guarantee that every venue, airline, retailer or government service will accept a particular saved image or digital pass; the issuer’s system and scanner determine that.

Before deleting an email or closing the provider account, open the saved item and confirm its name, date and code. This gives you a way to compare the Wallet copy with the original if something later looks wrong. If you use more than one Google Account, note which account receives the pass and which account is active in Wallet.

Choose the right way to add the pass

Use the provider’s own Wallet button whenever it is available. That route is normally the best way to receive issuer-managed changes. Use a photo when the item has a barcode or QR code but no direct Wallet button. Gmail auto-save is convenient for eligible messages, but it is optional and controlled by settings.

Add method What you need Best use Important limitation
Issuer’s Add to Google Wallet button The pass open in the provider’s app or website Tickets and passes that the issuer supports directly The button may be absent for an otherwise valid item
Photo in Wallet A clear image containing a barcode or QR code Eligible scannable passes without a direct add button Converted images can have limited functionality and may not receive issuer updates
Gmail auto-save An eligible Gmail item plus both required settings enabled Automatically saving qualifying passes and receipts from email Only eligible items are saved; disabling the setting stops future auto-saves

The choice depends on what information you have. A provider link gives you the issuer’s supported integration. A photo gives Wallet a scannable image but not necessarily the issuer’s live record. Gmail auto-save works only when the message and account qualify, so it is not a substitute for a missing provider button in every case.

Add a pass from the issuer’s app or website

This is the preferred workflow when the provider supports Google Wallet.

  1. Open the original item. Launch the provider’s app or sign in to its website, then open the specific ticket, pass or card you want to carry on your phone.
  2. Choose the provider’s Wallet option. Tap Add to Google Wallet. Some screens then show a second button labeled Add to Wallet; tap it to continue.
  3. Complete any requested verification. The issuer or Google may ask you to confirm your identity, account or ownership of the pass. Finish that check rather than closing the screen.
  4. Select a Wallet if prompted. If more than one Wallet or account is available, choose the one you intend to use on this phone.
  5. Accept the terms. Review the displayed terms and tap the acceptance control to finish adding the item.
  6. Confirm the result. Open Google Wallet and check that the pass appears. If it is not visible immediately, use the search instructions below before trying to add it again.

The wording and order can differ between issuers. A missing button usually means that the issuer has not enabled direct Wallet addition for that particular item, not that your phone has failed. If the pass contains a barcode or QR code, use the photo workflow instead.

Do not close the provider’s page until the confirmation is complete. If an identity check, account choice or terms screen is skipped, the item may not be added. When the provider offers several tickets, open the exact ticket you intend to use; adding one order does not necessarily add every ticket in that order.

Save a barcode or QR pass from a photo

Google Wallet can create a pass from an image even when the issuer has no Add to Google Wallet option. Google Wallet Help states: “If your pass has a barcode or QR code, you can save it to Google Wallet even if it doesn’t have the ‘Add to Google Wallet’ option.” The resulting item is useful for displaying the code at a reader, but it may not have all the features of an issuer-generated pass.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the image. Use a clear photo or screenshot in which the complete barcode or QR code is visible. Avoid glare, folds, heavy compression and text covering the code.
  2. Open Google Wallet. Tap Add to Google Wallet.
  3. Choose Photo. Select the photo that contains the barcode or QR code. If your phone asks for photo access, grant only the access needed to select the image.
  4. Name the item. Enter a name that will make the pass easy to recognize later, such as the event, store or trip name. Add a description if useful.
  5. Tap Add. Wallet creates the pass and places it with your other non-payment items.
  6. Test the display before you need it. Open the saved pass and make sure the code is large enough and undamaged on screen. Whether a scanner accepts the displayed code is determined by the issuer and its reader.

A photo-created pass is a representation of the original image. It may not receive changes such as a new seat, gate, expiration date or balance from the issuer. If the provider later offers a direct Wallet button, adding the issuer-managed version is preferable to relying on the converted image.

Use the highest-quality original image you have rather than photographing a screen from a distance. Include the full code and enough surrounding information to identify the pass, then give it a short, distinctive name. The name helps you search; it does not alter the code or connect the image to the issuer’s account.

Let Gmail save eligible passes automatically

Gmail auto-save can add qualifying passes and receipts without requiring you to open each message first. It works only when the relevant Gmail Smart features and Wallet setting are both on.

Turn on Gmail’s Smart features

  1. Open Gmail for the Google Account that receives the pass.
  2. Open Gmail settings and enable Smart features in other Google products for that account.

The exact location of the setting can vary by Gmail app or web interface. Make sure you change it for the account that receives the eligible message, especially if you use several accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on Wallet auto-save

  1. Open Google Wallet.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Open Manage passes from Gmail.
  5. Enable Auto save passes & receipts from Gmail.

The same settings area lets you view passes that were saved from Gmail. Auto-save applies to eligible items, not every message that contains a ticket-like image or attachment. Turning the switch off stops future automatic saves; it does not make an issuer’s unsupported pass eligible.

If a qualifying message does not produce a pass, first verify that both settings are enabled for the same account. Then open the original message and look for the issuer’s own Wallet control or a barcode image. Gmail auto-save is a convenience feature, not a guarantee that every receipt, attachment or forwarded message will be converted.

Find a saved pass later

Browse all non-payment items

  1. Open the Google Wallet app.
  2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  3. Browse the list of non-payment cards, passes and IDs.
  4. Tap the item you need to open its details and barcode or QR code.

Payment cards and other Wallet content can occupy the initial screen, so swiping up is the reliable way to reach the pass list. Open the pass before arriving at a gate, checkout or entrance so the screen is ready when you need it.

Search for a particular item

  1. In Wallet, tap View more.
  2. Tap the search bar.
  3. Enter the business, event, airline, venue or another word that identifies the pass.
  4. Tap the matching result to open it.

Try a short identifying term if a full title produces no result. Archived passes can appear at the bottom of search results, so scroll through the complete result list when looking for an older item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A descriptive name matters most for photo-created passes because Wallet has less issuer information to use. Search by the name you entered, the business shown on the pass or another distinctive word. If browsing and search both fail, return to the original provider app, website or email and verify that the item was actually added.

What happens when a pass changes?

An issuer-generated pass and a photo-created pass are not equivalent. A pass added through the provider’s Wallet integration may be connected to the issuer’s system and can be designed to reflect updates. A photo is a static representation and may miss later changes. For a trip or event, check the provider’s current app or website if any detail changes after you saved the item.

Keep the pass’s identifying information accurate when you name a photo-created item. A descriptive name helps you find it, but it does not change the barcode data or make the image update itself.

If the provider changes a seat, gate, expiration date, balance or other detail, treat the provider’s current record as authoritative. Reopen the original item and add the issuer-managed version when available, or replace the photo with a new image. Do not assume that a pass saved from a screenshot will change just because the original account changed.

Troubleshoot common problems

There is no “Add to Google Wallet” button

  • Confirm that you opened the actual ticket or pass, not a confirmation page that only contains an order number.
  • Check the issuer’s app and website; one version may expose the Wallet control while the other does not.
  • If the item has a barcode or QR code, save a clear image using Add to Google Wallet > Photo.
  • If no scannable code exists, the photo method may not apply. Ask the issuer whether it supports Wallet for that pass type.

Wallet reports an error while saving

Google advises contacting the pass issuer when an error may indicate a problem with the pass itself. Capture the exact error text, keep the original ticket or email, and contact the provider through its official support channel. Repeatedly retrying the same damaged or expired item is unlikely to repair issuer data.

The saved code will not scan

  • Increase screen brightness and open the pass full-screen.
  • Clean the phone screen and remove any protective overlay that obscures the code.
  • For a photo-created pass, compare the on-screen image with the original and re-add a sharper image if necessary.
  • Ask the venue, retailer or carrier whether its reader accepts the pass format. The issuer controls scanner compatibility.

The pass is missing on another phone

Wallet features and pass availability differ by country and region. Some passes are connected to your Google Account and may appear after you sign in on another device. Other pass types are tied to the original device and require a supported transfer method or manual re-add. Sign in with the same account first, then check the Wallet pass list and the issuer’s app before assuming the item is lost.

The pass disappeared after a phone reset or replacement

Resetting a phone deletes Wallet data stored on that device. Restoration depends on the pass and the applicable transfer method. Before resetting or trading in a phone, open the issuer’s app or website and save confirmation details somewhere you can access later. After setup, sign in to the same Google Account, check Wallet, and manually re-add any pass that does not return.

The pass is not in search results

Swipe up to browse the complete non-payment list, then use View more and search with a shorter business or event name. Scroll to the bottom because archived passes can appear there. If the item still is not present, verify the original add flow or repeat it from the issuer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move passes to a replacement phone

  1. On the new phone, install or open Google Wallet and sign in to the Google Account used for the original pass where applicable.
  2. Swipe up in Wallet and search for the item by its business or event name.
  3. If it appears, open it and verify the barcode, QR code and details.
  4. If it does not appear, check whether the pass provider offers a supported transfer, then follow that provider’s instructions.
  5. If no transfer is available, reopen the original issuer app, website or email and add the pass again. For a barcode or QR image, repeat the photo workflow.

Do not assume that signing in restores every item. Account-connected passes and device-specific passes follow different rules, and regional availability can change what you see.

When moving between phones, keep the old phone and the original issuer information available until the new Wallet copy works. A pass that was created from a photo may need to be added again even when other account-connected items return automatically. If the provider supplies a transfer process, use it instead of making a second unrelated copy.

Use a quick decision checklist

  • You have an issuer link: open the pass and use Add to Google Wallet.
  • You only have a barcode or QR image: use Add to Google Wallet > Photo, name it and test the displayed code.
  • You receive eligible passes by Gmail: enable Gmail Smart features and Wallet’s Auto save passes & receipts from Gmail.
  • You need a saved item later: open Wallet, swipe up, or use View more and search.
  • You changed phones: sign in, check Wallet, then use the issuer’s transfer or re-add process if necessary.
  • A save fails: preserve the original item and contact the issuer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I save a pass if there is no Add to Google Wallet button?

If it contains a barcode or QR code, open Wallet, choose Add to Google Wallet, select Photo, choose a clear image, name it and tap Add. The issuer’s scanner must accept the displayed code.

Where do saved passes appear in Google Wallet?

Open Wallet and swipe up from the bottom to see non-payment cards, passes and IDs. For a specific item, tap View more, use the search bar and try the business or event name. Archived passes can appear at the bottom of the results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a pass saved from a photo update when the issuer changes it?

Usually, treat a photo-created pass as a static representation. It may miss changes such as a seat, gate, expiration date or balance. Check the provider’s current app or website and add its Wallet version when available.

Why did my pass not appear on my new phone?

Availability depends on the country, region, pass type and device. Some passes follow your Google Account after sign-in; others need a supported transfer or manual re-add from the issuer.

What should I do when Wallet shows an error while saving?

Keep the original ticket or email, record the error text and contact the pass issuer. Google indicates that a saving error can reflect a problem with the pass itself.

Do I need Gmail auto-save to use Google Wallet?

No. Gmail auto-save is optional. For eligible messages, enable Gmail’s Smart features in other Google products and Wallet’s Auto save passes & receipts from Gmail setting. Direct issuer addition and the photo method work separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens to Wallet passes after I reset my phone?

A reset deletes Wallet data stored on that device. After setup, sign in to the same Google Account and check Wallet, then use the issuer’s transfer or re-add process for anything that does not return.

The Bottom Line

Start with the issuer’s Add to Google Wallet button. If the issuer offers no button but the pass has a barcode or QR code, add a clear image through Photo and test it before you need it. Eligible Gmail items can be saved automatically when both required settings are enabled. To find a pass later, open Wallet, swipe up, or search from View more. Device transfers, updates and scanner compatibility depend on the issuer, pass type, region and phone.
