Start with the exact public statement
Use the post’s direct permalink, not a profile URL or a search-result link. Public social-media pages can be edited, deleted, restricted by region or rendered differently for different viewers, so the URL is part of the evidence.

Open and verify the permalink
- Open the direct URL in a desktop browser.
- Confirm the account name and handle, the complete visible text, the platform’s displayed publication date and time, and any edited indicator.
- Expand “see more” text, replies, quoted posts and attached media when they are relevant to the statement.
- Wait for images, video thumbnails and lazy-loaded sections to finish rendering. Scroll through the page once so content that loads on demand has a chance to appear.
- Copy the permalink into a capture note before taking the image.
Do not sign in merely to reach a public post if doing so changes the page or exposes private information. If the statement is login-gated or personalized, record that limitation rather than presenting the capture as a universally visible public page.
Capture the whole page in Microsoft Edge
For a one-off public statement, Microsoft Edge’s built-in Screenshot command is the simplest desktop method. Microsoft describes it as capturing a full webpage, including sections that would otherwise require scrolling. Browser and operating-system behavior can vary by version.

Use the full-page command
- With the permalink open, right-click the page and choose Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose the full-page option rather than a selected-area or visible-viewport capture.
- Let Edge finish stitching the page. Keep the tab open and avoid navigating while the capture is being assembled.
- Save the result as a lossless PNG. Use a descriptive filename that includes the capture date and a short account or post identifier.
- Open the saved PNG and inspect it from top to bottom. Check for missing images, duplicated sections, cut-off text, sticky headers repeated on every segment or content that moved while the page was captured.
If the page is unusually long, dynamic or dependent on lazy loading, make a second capture after scrolling and compare both files. A second capture is preferable to silently retaining an incomplete image.
Create a PDF companion
Save a print-to-PDF copy as well as the PNG. The PNG preserves the visual rendering; the PDF often keeps selectable text and pagination that are useful when another person needs to search or quote the statement. Keep both original files untouched. If you create a cropped, annotated or redacted derivative, store it separately and identify it as a derivative.
Record the timestamp and capture context
Write a capture note beside the files. The timestamp should be the time the page was captured, recorded in UTC and clearly labeled as such. It is not the same as the post’s publication time, which should be copied separately exactly as the platform displays it.

Minimum capture-note fields

Keep the original timezone shown by the platform in your note. If you convert it to UTC for sorting, retain both values so a reviewer can distinguish the platform’s publication display from your conversion.

Hash every retained file
A SHA-256 hash proves that the bytes you verify later are the same bytes you hashed at capture time. It does not prove that your computer clock was correct, that the post’s author is genuine or that the statement is true.

Run the command for the PNG, PDF and any retained HTML or text export. Copy the exact hexadecimal digest into the capture note and, where your workflow permits, into a separate read-only record.
Add independent time evidence for high-stakes work
For a disputed statement, retain the rendered HTML or a self-contained page/PDF, response headers when available, and an independent RFC 3161 timestamp or public archive copy when privacy and policy allow. A public archive can fail on login-gated, personalized or JavaScript-heavy pages, so treat the live capture as the primary artifact and the archive as corroboration.

Understand what a screenshot proves
A full-page image shows what the public page rendered in one browser session. It is valuable evidence of that observed display, but it is not self-authenticating.

- It does not by itself prove who authored the statement.
- It does not prove that the statement is true.
- It does not prove that the platform did not change the page before or after your capture.
- A hash verifies file integrity after capture, not the source, authorship or correctness of the system clock.
- A permalink, HTML/PDF copy, capture note and independent timestamp make the record more reproducible and easier to authenticate.
Whether a screenshot is admissible in a legal proceeding depends on jurisdiction, authentication and context. Preserve the surrounding records rather than describing the image alone as court-admissible.

Handle difficult pages deliberately
Lazy-loaded images and long threads
Scroll through the thread before invoking full-page capture. If media appears only after interaction, expand it and note that action. Inspect the exported image for blank placeholders, repeated blocks or sections that were captured before their final content arrived.
Moving or personalized content
Feeds can reorder replies, insert recommendations or refresh counters while you work. Capture the direct post view, avoid unnecessary reloads, and write down the visible context. A second capture made immediately afterward can show whether the page changed during collection.

A page that requires login, is unavailable in your region or displays a consent wall is not equivalent to an openly accessible public page. Record the barrier and the account state used for the capture. Do not defeat access controls or expose private messages merely to obtain a cleaner image.

Very large captures
One Chrome canvas used by FullPage Capture is documented as limited to 28,800 pixels per side, or about 259 million pixels of area. Captures exceeding that tool-specific limit are split into numbered parts. This is not a general limit for every browser or capture system; verify the behavior of the tool you use.
Package the evidence for another person
Use a stable folder that keeps originals separate from working copies. For example:

statement-redacted.pngIn capture.txt, identify who performed the capture, the direct URL, account and platform, displayed publication time, UTC capture time, browser and viewport, visible replies or quoted context, and any missing or blocked content. Never overwrite the original files when adding annotations or redactions.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
- Edge’s built-in command is practical for an occasional capture because it requires no separate installation.
- Full-page stitching takes longer on pages with many images, animations or network requests. Waiting for a stable render is more important than taking the first available frame.
- PNG preserves text and interface detail without lossy compression; PDF is easier to paginate, search and print.
- There is no universal success-rate or speed benchmark for social-media screenshots. Results depend on the platform, page length, browser version, network and dynamic content.
- Managed services and evidence extensions may add subscription costs and platform-coverage constraints. Check current terms before using them for regulated records.
Troubleshooting

What filename makes a capture easiest to audit?
Use an ISO-8601 UTC timestamp followed by a stable account or post identifier, such as 2026-10-16T14-32-05Z_x-status-1234567890.png. Keep the same stem for the PDF, note and hash record.
Should a redacted copy replace the original?
No. Preserve the untouched original in a read-only location and create a clearly labeled redacted derivative for circulation. Record what was removed and why.
Can I rely on the screenshot without retaining the URL?
Retain the direct permalink with the file. Without it, a reviewer cannot readily reproduce the page or distinguish the captured statement from another post by the same account.
