If that option is unavailable, remove the microSD card as directed by the camera manual and use a compatible card reader. The right steps depend on your camera, phone, app, card and video format.
Which transfer method should you use?
| Method | Best when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Camera app over Wi-Fi | Your camera supports a phone app and you want to find and save a clip without removing the card. | Use the app and instructions for your exact camera model. Check whether the app offers the full-resolution file or a smaller copy. |
| microSD card reader | The app route is unavailable or you want to access files directly on the card. | Turn off the camera and follow its manual before removing the card. The reader must fit both the card and your phone’s port; the phone also needs a compatible app and media format. |
There is no universal transfer-speed comparison for these routes. Choose based on camera and app support, connector compatibility, convenience and whether you can access the resolution you need.

Transfer a clip with the dash cam app
- Find the correct app and instructions. Check the current manual for your camera model; manufacturer workflows are not interchangeable.
- Enable the camera’s Wi-Fi. Follow the camera’s instructions for turning on its wireless connection.
- Connect your phone to the camera. If prompted, open the phone’s Wi-Fi settings and select the camera’s network. VIOFO’s instructions, for example, use this sequence before opening the VIOFO app: VIOFO app connection instructions.
- Open the app and locate the recording. Look for the relevant clip, then use the app’s save, export or download control. Garmin describes using its camera-generated Wi-Fi connection to review, trim and export video. Nextbase also describes downloading files to a phone or tablet through Wi-Fi and its app: Nextbase Wi-Fi feature information.
- Check which quality version you saved. Some higher-resolution Nextbase models record both high- and low-resolution copies. The lower-resolution version supports efficient streaming, while the high-resolution file is available for playback. This behavior is model-specific, so check your camera’s instructions and select the high-resolution clip when detail matters.
Why does the camera Wi-Fi say there is no internet?
A camera’s Wi-Fi network may be a local connection for moving footage rather than an internet connection. VIOFO says that a phone may show “Connected without Internet” on its camera Wi-Fi and advises users not to disconnect for that reason alone. This warning applies to VIOFO’s documented workflow; other cameras may show different messages. If the app cannot find or download the clip, check the model-specific connection steps rather than assuming that the no-internet notice itself means the transfer failed.

- Turn off the camera and remove its card safely. Follow the removal instructions in the dash cam manual; do not assume every model handles card removal the same way.
- Choose a compatible reader. Match the reader to the card and the phone’s physical connector. A USB-C microSD reader is an option for a compatible USB-C phone; a Lightning phone or another connector needs a matching reader or adapter.
- Connect the reader and open the card. Use a phone-supported app to browse or import the clip. Apple documents SD-card access through compatible readers and apps, with supported storage formats: Apple: Import photos and videos.
- Locate and copy the recording. Browse the card in the app and save or import the desired file. The precise folder structure and app controls depend on the camera and phone.
The video copied, but my phone will not play it
Copying a file and playing it are separate steps. A card may be readable even when a particular phone app cannot play the video format. Apple’s import guidance notes that media in an unsupported format may not be viewable in iOS. Try a video player that supports the file, or transfer it to a computer for playback. Keep the original file if you need to preserve the recording while troubleshooting.

- Match the card reader or adapter to both the microSD card and the phone connector.
- Make sure the phone app supports the video format if a copied clip will not open.
