This download is a machine-readable snapshot containing HTML and JSON files. Depending on the information available for your account, it can include posts, Direct Messages, media, follower and following lists, Lists, profile details, address-book data, inferred interests and demographics, and information about ads you saw or engaged with. The archive is broader than the profile timeline, which X says displays up to 3,200 of your most recent posts.

What an X archive gives you
An X archive is a downloadable copy of account information that X makes available through its data-access controls. X describes it as a snapshot rather than a promise that every record ever associated with an account will be present. The archive is intended for browsing and analysis on your own device, not as a guarantee of permanent storage by X.
Posts beyond the visible timeline
X’s New user FAQ says a profile timeline displays up to 3,200 of a user’s most recent posts. That is a display limit, not evidence that older posts were deleted. X’s archive guidance says the download can be browsed from your first post. In practical terms, the timeline is a limited, online view, while the archive is a file-based export with a wider historical scope.

X lists examples of information that can appear in the export:
- Profile and account information
- Posts
- Direct Messages
- Moments
- Attached images, videos and GIFs
- Follower and following lists
- Address-book information
- Lists
- Inferred interests and demographic information
- Information about advertisements you saw or engaged with on X
The exact contents can vary by account and by the data X makes available at the time of export. Treat the result as the snapshot X describes, not as a universal copy of every conceivable account record.
Timeline or archive: which should you use?
Use the timeline when you need to find a recent post quickly on the website or app. Use the archive when you need a local, machine-readable copy, older posts, or account-data categories that do not appear on the profile page.

The official guidance does not establish that every archive contains every category for every account, nor does it call the export a permanent backup. Keep your own copy if you need long-term retention.
Prepare before requesting the export
A little preparation prevents the most common download problems.

- Make sure you can sign in. You will need the account whose data you are requesting, and you must remain signed in when downloading the finished archive.
- Confirm the account email address. X advises confirming the email address before making the request because the ready notification and download link are sent to the confirmed address on the account.
- Have access to the verification method. The request flow sends a verification code to the email address and/or phone number on file.
- Plan enough storage. The result is a ZIP file that may contain media as well as text. Check that your device has room for the download and the uncompressed files.
- Choose a private location. Messages, contacts and other account details can be sensitive. Use a device and folder that other people cannot casually browse.
Request your X archive in the mobile app
The labels below match the current archive-specific X help instructions. X can change wording between app versions, operating systems and account types, so choose the account-data and archive-request controls that appear in your interface.
- Open your account menu. Launch the X app, tap your profile icon, and select Settings and privacy.
- Open account data. Tap Account, then find Your X data under Data and permissions.
- Verify your identity. Choose the option to send a verification code to the email address and/or phone number on file. Enter the code when X asks for it. If the code does not arrive, check the correct inbox, look in spam or junk folders, and confirm that the phone number can receive messages.
- Start the archive request. In Download your data, tap Request data beside X. This submits the export request for the signed-in account.
- Wait for the ready notice. X says it will send an email or app notification when the archive is prepared. The email includes a download link to the confirmed address on the account.
- Download while signed in. Open the notification or email, return to X if necessary, and download the archive ZIP while logged in to the same X account. X specifically advises being logged in to the account in the browser used for downloading.

The browser route uses the same account-data controls, although the menu names can differ. An additional X help page describes an alternate or older path using Your account and Download an archive of your data. If you do not see the exact labels in the mobile instructions, open your account settings, look for Your X data or a similarly named data-and-permissions area, and select the archive-download control shown there.
- Sign in to the X account you want to export.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Enter the account or data-and-permissions section.
- Open Your X data, Download your data, or the equivalent archive option displayed by X.
- Complete email or phone verification.
- Choose Request data beside X and wait for the ready notification.
- Follow the notification link while still signed in to that same account, then save the ZIP file.
X’s additional account-data explanation is available at How to access and download your X data. Because settings labels can shift, the controls currently displayed for your account take precedence over an older wording of the route.
What happens after you request it
Preparation is asynchronous
The request does not create an instant download. X says preparation may take a few days. Leave the account’s confirmed email address accessible during that period and watch both the inbox and X notifications for the ready message.

The download is a ZIP archive
When X marks the export ready, download the ZIP from the provided link. Keep the original ZIP unchanged as your reference copy before opening or reorganizing anything. If the download is interrupted, restart it from the signed-in X page rather than relying on an incomplete file.
Identity and session checks still apply
A ready notification is not a public link to your data. X’s instructions require you to be logged in to the account in the browser used for the download. If the link sends you to a sign-in page, authenticate to the same account that made the request and then retry the download.
Open and inspect the files
HTML for human browsing
X describes the archive as containing HTML files. These are useful for reading posts and navigating account information in a web browser. After extracting the ZIP, look for an HTML index or navigation page and open it locally. If your operating system asks which application to use, select a browser; the files do not need to be uploaded to another service just to read them.
JSON for structured data
The archive also contains JSON files. JSON is text formatted for software and data tools, so it is useful if you want to search, sort or analyze posts and other records. A text editor can display the files, while a programming environment or data-analysis application can parse them. Do not edit the originals if you may need to verify their contents later; work on a duplicate.
Media and message records
Images, videos and GIFs attached to posts may be represented alongside the relevant account data. Direct Messages are a separate sensitive category: protect the extracted folder as carefully as the ZIP because it may contain private conversations. The presence of a category in X’s list means it can be included, not that every account will have a populated file for that category.

Keep a durable personal copy
If the export matters for legal, professional, family or historical reasons, keep more than one copy under your control. A practical arrangement is the untouched ZIP in a private folder plus a second copy on another storage device. An external drive is optional, but it can provide a second location if your computer fails. Label the copy with the account and download date, and record whether it is still the original ZIP or an extracted working copy.
Use access controls appropriate to the sensitivity of the files. Anyone who can open the archive may be able to read messages, contact information, media and inferred-account data. Avoid placing it in a shared folder or sending it through an unencrypted channel. If you later move or delete a copy, check that another usable copy remains first.

You cannot find “Your X data”
Look under Settings and privacy for Account and then Data and permissions. On some interfaces, the route may use Your account or Download an archive of your data instead. X’s labels are not identical across every interface, so use the archive-request control currently shown in your account.
The verification code never arrives
- Check that you are looking at the confirmed email address or the phone number shown for the account.
- Search spam, junk and filtered folders for the message.
- Wait briefly before requesting another code so that an older code is not mistaken for the current one.
- If you no longer control the listed contact method, update account contact information through X’s available account-recovery process before attempting the export again.
The archive is not ready yet
X says preparation may take a few days. Check the account’s email and notifications during that period. If you receive no ready notice after the stated preparation window, sign in to the account-data page and see whether the request is still pending or whether X offers a new request option. Do not assume that repeatedly starting requests will make the first export finish faster.

The download link asks you to sign in
That is consistent with X’s requirement that the download be made while logged in. Sign in to the same account that requested the archive, then open the link again in that browser. Avoid downloading through a different account session.

The ZIP will not open
First check that the file finished downloading and that its name ends in .zip. A partial download can look like a valid file but fail during extraction. Download it again from the signed-in X page, then use the built-in ZIP extractor on your operating system. Preserve the failed file only if you need it for troubleshooting; do not treat it as your archive copy.
You expected an old post but cannot see it
Check the archive’s HTML and JSON rather than relying only on the profile page. X says the timeline displays up to 3,200 recent posts, while the archive is described as browseable from the first post. Neither statement guarantees that every historical record is available in every account export, so an absent item should not by itself be treated as proof of deletion.
Important limits to understand
- It is a snapshot. The files represent account information available when X generated the export. Activity that happens afterward will not appear until a later export.
- It is not an instant service. X says preparation may take a few days.
- It is not a guaranteed complete legal record. X lists examples of included information but does not guarantee every category or every historical record for every account.
- The timeline limit and archive scope differ. The 3,200-post figure applies to the profile timeline; it should not be used as a count of how many posts the archive contains.
- Access depends on account control. Verification and a signed-in download are part of the process, so losing access to the account or its confirmed contact methods can prevent completion.

Bottom line
Request the export from Settings and privacy → Account → Your X data, complete the verification code, and choose Request data under Download your data. Wait for X’s notification, then download the ZIP while signed in to the same account. Open the HTML files for browsing and retain the JSON and original ZIP if you need a durable, searchable record of your posts and other account data.
