The Arch User Repository (AUR) is not a vetted app store. It publishes user-submitted build recipes, and running makepkg executes shell code from those recipes and their companion files. Use an AUR package only after you have read the exact revision, traced its sources and commands, verified available checksums and signatures, and decided that every action is acceptable. Build as an unprivileged user, keep Arch current, and prefer a clean chroot when you need reproducibility or diagnosis.
Votes, an old package, or a familiar maintainer can provide context, but none replaces a line-by-line review. A valid upstream signature authenticates signed data; it does not prove that the PKGBUILD itself is harmless.

What the AUR is—and what it is not
The AUR is a community repository of package descriptions. A user downloads a repository containing a PKGBUILD and related files, runs makepkg to fetch, compile, and package the software, then installs the resulting package with pacman. The AUR is unofficial and unsupported by the Arch project. There is no Arch security review that certifies each recipe, and inclusion does not guarantee that the advertised software or the build instructions are safe.
That changes the trust decision. You are not merely downloading a binary; you are choosing to execute instructions that can download code, run programs, create files, and influence the package that will later be installed. Treat an AUR checkout as source code. Review the current revision, not a cached copy or a previous version you remember.

ArchWiki warning: “Warning Carefully check the
PKGBUILD, any .install files, and any other files present in the package’s git repository for malicious or dangerous commands.”
Popularity is only context. Votes, comments, the maintainer’s name, and the age of a package cannot tell you what changed in the revision you are about to build. A compromised or careless update can be introduced into a popular package, while a less popular package may have straightforward, auditable instructions. Your decision should be based on the code and sources you can explain.
What actually runs during an AUR build
makepkg reads shell variables and functions in the PKGBUILD. It may download entries in the source array, verify checksums and optional signatures, unpack archives, and execute the package’s build functions. The usual functions are:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →prepare(), which applies patches or performs source preparation;build(), which compiles or otherwise creates the software;check(), which runs the project’s tests when provided; andpackage(), which copies files into the package directory and sets metadata.
These functions are shell code. Command substitutions, pipelines, loops, environment-variable expansion, downloaded helper scripts, and tools called by those scripts all matter. A harmless-looking variable can change a destination path; a command in prepare() can fetch and execute another script; and a package function can place files in locations that affect later system operation.
Review the files that accompany the PKGBUILD as executable material too. An .install file can contain package lifecycle hooks. Patches can alter code in ways that are not obvious from the PKGBUILD. Systemd units, hooks, helper scripts, and embedded shell, Python, or other language files may run during building or installation. Do not assume that a file is safe because it is not named PKGBUILD.
Prepare the system before reviewing or building
Update Arch first
Bring the system up to date before starting. A current system reduces failures caused by stale compilers, libraries, and packaging tools and ensures that official repository dependencies match the environment for which the recipe was written. Do not mix a partially upgraded system with an AUR build.

Install the complete base-devel group
Arch’s guidance recommends the complete base-devel group for building AUR packages. Install it from the official repositories before attempting a build. If a recipe lists additional official dependencies, let makepkg resolve them with -s or --syncdeps when appropriate. Dependencies that are themselves in the AUR are not automatically made trustworthy by that option: obtain and review each one separately.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse a normal user account
Do not run makepkg as root. A malicious or faulty build then has the permissions of your ordinary account rather than unrestricted control of the system. Installation with pacman is the step that requires administrative authorization; keep the build and source review unprivileged.
Obtain and pin the exact revision you review
Use the AUR web interface or its Git repository, then record the package page, maintainer, revision, and exact commit you examined. A review is meaningful only for the files you actually inspected. If the checkout changes after your review, repeat the review or compare the new revision before building.
List every file in the checkout, including files in subdirectories. A simple file listing helps reveal an unexpected binary, an extra script, or a hook that is easy to miss in a quick web-page view. Review recent history and diffs with git show or an equivalent Git diff. Pay special attention to newly added download commands, changed source URLs, checksum changes, new privilege use, and edits to install hooks.
Read every file before executing makepkg
Start with package metadata
Read the package name, version, release number, architecture, license, dependencies, and conflicts. Check that the description and upstream project match what you intended to install. A package that advertises one program but pulls an unrelated project, a replacement shell, or a bundled service deserves a stop-and-review decision.
Trace the source array
For each source entry, identify the exact host, project, release, and file that will be downloaded. Ask whether the location is expected for the upstream release and whether a source has silently moved to an unrelated mirror. Check whether the recipe fetches additional content inside prepare(), build(), or package(); those network operations may not be visible in the main source list.

Record what each archive is supposed to contain and whether it is source code or a prebuilt binary. An opaque prebuilt artifact gives you less opportunity to inspect what will run. A package that downloads an unexplained script during the build should be treated as unsafe until someone can account for it.
Understand checksums
Match every checksum in the PKGBUILD to the source it covers. A checksum confirms that the downloaded bytes match the value recorded by the recipe; it does not establish that the recipe author selected a benign file. If a URL or archive changed, a maintainer may legitimately update the checksum, but that change must be reviewed as a new source decision rather than accepted mechanically.
Inspect all shell functions line by line
For each command, write down its purpose, inputs, outputs, and destination. Confirm that:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- environment variables are used only for expected configuration;
- commands operate inside the build or package directories unless an exception is clearly justified;
- network access is limited to expected upstream sources;
- no command invokes
sudo, changes user identity, or asks for unnecessary privileges; - temporary files, caches, and generated artifacts are not written into unrelated home or system locations; and
- the package function installs only files belonging to the advertised software.
Do not skip commands because they look like routine build tooling. A compiler invocation, archive extraction, code generator, or test runner can execute project-provided code. Explain command substitutions and scripts called indirectly by variables before allowing them to run.
Review companion files
Open every .install file, patch, hook, systemd unit, helper script, and embedded script. Determine when each one runs and what it changes. Look for service activation, user or group creation, configuration-file replacement, shell startup edits, cron jobs, path changes, and writes outside the package’s expected file set. A patch that adds telemetry, a remote download, or privilege escalation is material even if the PKGBUILD itself is short.
Verify signatures and hashes without over-trusting them
When .sig or .asc files appear in the PKGBUILD’s source array, makepkg automatically attempts to verify them with your GPG keyring. It aborts when a required key cannot be verified. Do not bypass a failed check merely to make the build proceed.

A valid signature authenticates the signed data to a key; it does not certify that the build instructions are benevolent. ArchWiki cautions: “In any case, be aware also malicious code may be signed, therefore you must vet the PKGBUILD, particularly for sections that may pull software code from outside the repositories.” A compromised release process or a malicious maintainer can sign harmful content.
Treat validpgpkeys as an assertion about which keys the recipe expects. Independently confirm that each key belongs to the upstream project or release process you intend to trust. Check that the signed file is the one the recipe uses, that the URL is expected, and that the signature is not merely attached to an unrelated archive. Hashes and signatures are complementary to code review, not replacements for it.
A safe, repeatable build workflow
- Update and prepare. Update Arch, install the complete
base-develgroup, and ensure you have enough disk space for source archives, build output, and package files. - Choose the package deliberately. Confirm the upstream project, release, license, dependencies, and reason you need the AUR recipe. If multiple recipes exist, postpone the choice until you compare them.
- Obtain the checkout. Use the AUR web interface or Git repository. Record the package page, maintainer, revision, and commit identifier.
- Inventory files. List all files, including subdirectories. Open the PKGBUILD, every
.installfile, patches, hooks, units, helper scripts, and embedded code. - Review history. Use
git showor an equivalent diff to inspect recent changes. Treat a change to a source URL, checksum, signing key, privilege boundary, or install hook as a reason for focused review. - Trace sources. Account for every
sourceentry, checksum, signature, and download performed by a build function. Confirm that each source belongs to the intended upstream project. - Explain execution. Read
prepare(),build(),check(), andpackage()line by line. Do not proceed while any command, variable expansion, network request, or filesystem write is unexplained. - Build unprivileged. Run
makepkgas a normal user. Usemakepkg -sormakepkg --syncdepswhen you want repository dependencies resolved automatically. Review AUR dependencies independently. - Prefer a clean chroot. For reproducibility, package maintenance, or difficult failures, build in a clean chroot containing only the intended base system and dependencies. If the same failure occurs there, your local configuration is less likely to be the cause and the PKGBUILD becomes a stronger suspect.
- Inspect the result. After
makepkgcreates a package, inspect its metadata and complete file list. Compare paths, services, users, permissions, and configuration files with what you expected from the review. - Install only after the comparison. Use
pacman -Uon the resulting package only when the package contents and metadata match your decision. Keep the reviewed checkout and built package so you can identify exactly what was installed.
What to inspect in the finished package
The build can be honest while the resulting file set is still broader than you expected, so perform a post-build check. Examine the package name and version, dependency declarations, license, architecture, and file list. Look for:
- executables installed into system paths that were not part of the advertised program;
- systemd units, hooks, shell startup files, cron entries, or desktop autostart files;
- setuid or setgid permissions and files owned by unexpected users;
- configuration files that overwrite existing settings; and
- documentation or licenses that do not match the upstream project.
Compare the package’s files with the paths created in package(). An unexplained file is a reason to stop, remove the build output, and ask for review rather than installing first and investigating later.
How to compare two AUR packages for the same software
When more than one recipe claims to provide a program, compare the instructions rather than choosing by votes alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Comparison point | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream source | Does each recipe point directly to the intended project and release? | Directly attributable sources reduce ambiguity and unexpected mirrors. |
| Maintainer activity | Are recent changes understandable, documented, and consistent with upstream releases? | Unexplained or abrupt changes deserve additional scrutiny. |
| Patches | How many patches are applied, and can each one be traced to a known fix? | Every patch changes the code you will run. |
| Network access | Does the build fetch anything beyond the declared sources? | Hidden downloads can bypass the review and checksum process. |
| Prebuilt binaries | Does the package bundle opaque binaries instead of building from inspectable source? | Binary-only components provide less visibility into behavior. |
| Verification | Are checksums and upstream signatures present and correctly tied to the sources? | Verification detects substitution, although it cannot bless malicious instructions. |
| Dependencies | Which official and AUR packages are required, and have their recipes also been reviewed? | Trust extends through the entire dependency chain. |
| Install hooks | What do .install files, units, and hooks do at install, upgrade, or removal time? |
Lifecycle actions can change the system after the build ends. |
| License | Does the declared license match the upstream project and included components? | A mismatch can indicate repackaging or an incomplete audit. |
| Clean-chroot result | Can the recipe build reproducibly in a clean environment? | Repeatability helps separate recipe problems from local configuration. |
Prefer the recipe whose sources are directly attributable and whose instructions you can fully explain. If neither meets that standard, do not install either one; build from upstream source yourself or seek an informed review.
Best Value
Stop conditions: when not to run makepkg
Stop before building when any of the following appears:
- obfuscated shell, encoded payloads, or code deliberately made difficult to read;
- a download of an unexplained script or archive, especially when it is executed immediately;
- writes outside expected build and package locations without a clear, documented reason;
- requests for root,
sudo, user switching, or other privilege that the software does not need to compile; - addition of an unknown repository, package source, or signing key;
- disabled or bypassed checksum, signature, certificate, or TLS verification;
- opaque prebuilt binaries with no credible upstream provenance;
- commands you cannot explain, even if the package has many votes; or
- a mismatch between the advertised software and the files, services, or network behavior in the checkout.
Delete or quarantine the checkout and seek a second review through appropriate Arch community channels when uncertain. A scanner can be useful as an extra signal, but it cannot replace manual examination of shell code, downloaded build steps, and install hooks.
Common mistakes and how to recover
“It has many votes, so I skipped the review.”
Votes measure community activity, not the safety of the current commit. Return to the exact revision, inspect its history and files, and rebuild only after you can account for its commands and sources.
Recommended Free Tools
“The signature was valid, so the PKGBUILD must be safe.”
The signature may authenticate upstream source bytes while the PKGBUILD executes a separate malicious command. Keep the signature check, then review every build function and companion file independently.
“makepkg -s reviewed all dependencies for me.”
-s or --syncdeps can resolve dependencies from official repositories. AUR dependencies still require their own checkout, revision, source, signature, and command review. Map the complete dependency chain before building.
“It works on my machine, so the recipe is sound.”
A local build can succeed because your system has undeclared tools, environment variables, or cached files. Rebuild in a clean chroot to remove those variables. A failure that persists there points more strongly to the recipe or its declared assumptions.
“The build failed, so I ran it as root.”
Do not elevate the build to bypass a failure. Read the error, verify official dependencies, inspect paths and permissions, and try a clean chroot. Root can turn a packaging bug or malicious command into a system-wide compromise.
“I checked the PKGBUILD but not the rest of the repository.”
Reopen the checkout and inspect every file, including hidden or nested files, hooks, units, patches, and scripts. The dangerous instruction may be outside the main recipe.
A practical review checklist
- Identity: I know the intended upstream project, release, license, maintainer, revision, and commit.
- Completeness: I listed and read every repository file, not only the PKGBUILD.
- Sources: I traced every URL, archive, generated download, checksum, and signature.
- Execution: I can explain every command, variable expansion, network request, privilege change, and destination path.
- Dependencies: I reviewed AUR dependencies separately and know which dependencies come from official repositories.
- Verification: Required signatures and hashes pass, and I independently checked the expected signing keys.
- Build context: I am building as a normal user, with an up-to-date system and the complete
base-develgroup. - Isolation: I used a clean chroot when reproducibility or diagnosis matters.
- Output: I inspected package metadata, file paths, permissions, services, hooks, and configuration files before installation.
- Decision: I stopped when any behavior was obfuscated, unexplained, unnecessarily privileged, unrelated, or unverifiable.
Bottom line: what “safe” means for the AUR
There is no blanket “safe AUR” status. Safety is a decision you make for one package, one revision, and one dependency graph after inspecting the code that will execute. Keep Arch current, obtain and pin the checkout, read every file, trace sources and filesystem writes, verify hashes and signatures without treating them as a guarantee, build unprivileged, and inspect the resulting package before pacman -U. If you cannot explain what a recipe does, do not run it.
