Finish any file transfer, unmount the USB drive using a control on your Galaxy phone, and unplug it only after the phone indicates it has been unmounted. Samsung documents several ways to do this; the available menu can vary by model and software version.
Why unmount a USB drive before unplugging?
Unmounting gives the phone a chance to stop using the storage before you disconnect it. Samsung warns that removing a USB drive without unmounting can risk data corruption, but does not publish a rate or say that every abrupt removal will damage files. Samsung’s DeX guidance explains the precaution.

Unmount USB storage on a Galaxy phone
- Let the transfer finish. Wait for any copy, move, or backup operation to complete before unmounting. Samsung’s transfer instructions place unmounting after the transfer.
- Check the notification panel. Swipe down from the top of the screen; swipe down again if needed to expand it. Tap the notification or control for the connected USB storage, then choose Unmount. The precise wording or placement may differ. Samsung India documents this route.
- Try My Files if the notification control is not available. Open My Files, find the external storage entry, tap its three-dot options menu, and choose Unmount. Samsung US documents this route for external storage.
- Use Settings if your model has the documented path. Go to Settings > Device Care > Storage > Advanced, then tap the eject icon beside the USB drive. This route is documented by Samsung India, but may not appear on every Galaxy model or software version. See Samsung’s instructions.
- Unplug only after unmounting. Once the phone indicates that the drive is unmounted, disconnect it.
Unmount a USB drive in Samsung DeX
When you are using DeX, use its taskbar control rather than the ordinary phone routes: select the USB icon on the taskbar, then choose Unmount. Samsung says the drive is safe to remove after this action. Samsung’s DeX instructions also explain the data-corruption precaution.

Connecting a USB drive to a Galaxy phone
A USB flash drive or SSD can connect to a Galaxy device’s charging port, but the connector may require an adapter. A Type-C drive may connect directly to a compatible Type-C port; a Type-A drive may need a USB-C OTG adapter. Check the phone’s port and the drive’s connector before choosing an adapter. Samsung US describes external storage connections, and Samsung Australia describes Type-C and OTG options.

Samsung’s cited guidance does not provide a complete compatibility list for Galaxy models, storage formats, or drive capacities. If your phone does not recognize a drive, consult support or the manual for your specific model rather than assuming every USB drive will work.

The available Samsung support instructions do not establish one universal recovery procedure for a missing control or a failed unmount. Do not treat unplugging as the documented fix; check the manual or contact support for your exact Galaxy model and software version.
