Start with the Ally X’s real size and weight
Case listings often advertise external dimensions, while the measurement that determines whether the console is protected is the usable internal space. ASUS lists the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) at 29.0 × 12.1 × 2.75–5.09 cm (11.42 × 4.76 × 1.08–2.00 inches) and 715 g (1.58 lb). The varying depth reflects the handheld’s shape; use 5.09 cm as the maximum thickness when checking a case.

The Xbox product page supplies the official co-branded product context, while the dimensions, weight, battery capacity and adapter rating above come from ASUS’s 2025 product specifications. They describe the console itself, not the size of a case or a packed travel kit.

Choose a case by internal fit, not its product name
Measure the packed setup you actually carry
Before buying or packing, place the Ally X in the configuration you use on trips. Include an attached protective shell, grip, thumb-stick caps, screen protector, charging cable, dock and any other item that will occupy the main compartment. Measure the case’s internal length, width and depth with the padding and dividers in place. A large external shell can lose several centimetres of usable space to foam, fabric and a molded tray.
Leave a little clearance around every dimension. The zipper should close without compressing the screen, sticks, triggers or shoulder buttons. If you have to force the lid down, the case is too small even when the published measurements appear to match. Compression can also transfer pressure from a charger or dock to the display.
Prioritize a rigid or semi-rigid exterior
A rigid or semi-rigid shell resists crushing when the case is under a seat, in an overhead bin or beside other bags. Pair it with a padded lining that holds the handheld in place instead of letting it touch the shell. A soft sleeve can work inside a larger bag, but it does not provide the same resistance to a hard object landing on the console.

Inspect the zipper and lid design
The zipper should run around the shell without sitting directly on the display area. Look for a padded lip between the zipper track and the handheld. Close the empty case first, then close it with the console installed; a zipper that snags on a stick, trigger or cable is a warning that the fit is too tight.
Give hard accessories their own protection
Use a separate padded pocket for the 65 W USB-C adapter, cables and dock. Do not place a dock or power bank loose beside the console where it can strike the screen during a drop. A compartment with a zipper, elastic restraint or fitted divider is preferable to a large open pouch in which accessories can move freely.
Check restraint and handling features
A handle is useful only if it can be held securely and does not cause the case to swing into other luggage. For car travel, look for a shape that can sit flat on the floor or fit inside a snug bag. For air travel, compare the closed case’s outside dimensions with the operating airline’s current personal-item and carry-on limits.

Will a large case fit as a personal item or carry-on?
There is no universal cabin-bag size. The airline operating your flight sets the applicable limits, and a connecting carrier may enforce a different rule. A case can be acceptable as a carry-on yet too large for the smaller personal-item allowance intended to fit under the seat. Check the current allowance on the operating carrier’s website immediately before departure, including any limits on height, width, depth and weight.

Measure the case in its travel configuration
- Close every zipper, latch and expansion panel.
- Measure the exterior at its widest, longest and deepest points, including handles, feet and protruding pockets.
- Record the packed weight with the Ally X, charger, dock, cables and accessories inside.
- Compare those numbers with the airline’s published allowance for the specific ticket and flight.
Do not rely on a seller’s label such as “carry-on size.” That phrase may describe a different airline’s limit or the case without its contents. If the case is close to the limit, avoid overstuffing expandable pockets; bulging fabric can make the measured depth exceed the allowance at the gate.
Use the cabin rather than checked baggage
Keep the Ally X accessible in a personal item or carry-on so it can be removed for screening if requested. Checked baggage exposes a precision electronic device and its case to impact, crushing and loss. It also creates a battery-handling problem: spare batteries and power banks must not go into checked baggage.
Plan for security screening
Put the case where you can reach it without unpacking the rest of your luggage. At the checkpoint, follow the officer’s instructions. You may be asked to remove the handheld or open the case. Keep cables coiled and the adapter in its own pocket so the inspection can be completed without stacking hard items on the console.
Handle the Ally X battery and power banks correctly on a plane
Keep lithium batteries in the cabin
FAA PackSafe states: “Power banks, spare batteries, and lithium batteries with a capacity of less than 160 Wh must remain with passengers in the aircraft cabin.” The Ally X has a built-in 80 Wh battery, which is below that threshold. Keep the handheld in your cabin bag, and put every separate power bank or spare battery in the cabin as well.
Protect exposed battery terminals from short circuits. Use the battery’s original packaging, a dedicated battery case or individual protective sleeves; do not let loose cells share a pocket with coins, keys or other metal objects. Airline procedures can be stricter than the general domestic rule, so check the carrier’s battery instructions before travel.

Do not travel with a damaged or recalled battery
FAA guidance says a damaged or recalled battery-powered device that could spark or generate dangerous heat must not be carried aboard unless the battery has been removed or otherwise made safe. Stop packing if the Ally X or a battery is swollen, punctured, unusually hot or subject to a recall. Contact the airline and the manufacturer for instructions rather than placing the device in either checked or cabin baggage without clearance.
Prevent accidental activation inside the case
Shut the Ally X down or use the device’s normal travel power state before closing the case. Keep the power button from being pressed by a divider, charger or tight lid. Do not pack the console while it is hot from gaming or charging; give it time to cool, then close the case with ventilation openings unobstructed.
How to place and protect the case on the aircraft
Under the seat
Under-seat storage is convenient when the case fits without force. Orient it so the shell is not bowed by the seat frame and so the zipper, screen and controls are not pressed against a rigid obstruction. Do not wedge a case into a space that prevents it from being removed quickly or that blocks required floor space.
In the overhead bin
Use the overhead bin only as directed by the crew. Keep the case closed, place it flat when possible and avoid putting heavy luggage on top. If the case has a handle or external pocket, position those features so they do not catch on other bags when the bin is opened.
During the flight
Do not open the case in a crowded aisle or leave the handheld loose on a tray table. If you need to use the Ally X, remove it carefully, keep the case in a stable location and return the console to its padded compartment before the aircraft begins descent.
Secure the case in a car
Use the passenger compartment
Place the closed case on the floor behind a front seat or inside a restrained bag. This keeps it away from loose hard luggage that can become a projectile during sudden braking. A floor position also lowers the chance of the case sliding off a seat.

Stop movement with a seat belt or strap
If the case must ride on a seat, route a seat belt around it and tighten the belt so the shell cannot slide. A luggage strap or snug compartment can serve the same purpose when used according to the vehicle and strap manufacturer’s instructions. Check the restraint after loading and again after the first few minutes of driving.

Separate the console from hard accessories
Keep the dock, charger and other rigid items in their own pockets. If they share the main cavity, a sudden stop can drive an accessory into the display even when the exterior shell remains intact. Do not leave a cable looped across a trigger or thumb stick.
Manage heat and cold
Keep the case out of direct sunlight and do not leave it in a parked vehicle’s heat. A closed car can become hot enough to stress electronics and batteries even when the outside temperature feels moderate. After a cold or hot trip, let the Ally X move toward room temperature before charging or powering it on. Avoid condensation by allowing the device to acclimate while it remains protected in the closed case.
Reduce theft risk
Never leave a visible case unattended in a vehicle. A dedicated gaming-handheld case signals that valuable electronics are inside. Take it with you or place it out of sight before arriving at your destination, not after parking where someone can watch you hide it.

These profiles are categories, not guarantees. The actual result depends on the case’s internal layout and the airline’s published allowance. A larger case can protect better but be harder to stow; a slim case is easier to carry but may exclude an installed shell or charger.

A packing procedure that avoids pressure and movement
- Inspect the device. Check the screen, shell, sticks, triggers, ports and battery condition. Do not pack a swollen, punctured, unusually hot or recalled battery-powered device.
- Power down and cool. Shut the Ally X down or place it in its normal travel power state, then let it cool before closing the case.
- Prepare the main compartment. Remove loose objects and confirm that the padding is seated correctly. Make sure the deepest part of the tray accommodates the 5.09 cm maximum body thickness.
- Install the console without force. Place the Ally X so the screen faces the padded side specified by the case design. Confirm that no stick, trigger or button is under pressure.
- Secure the handheld. Use the case’s retention strap, molded cradle or divider. It should prevent movement without squeezing the display.
- Pack accessories separately. Put the 65 W USB-C adapter, dock and cables in their dedicated padded pockets. Protect a power bank or spare battery from contact with metal objects and keep it in the cabin for flights.
- Close and test the case. Zip or latch it slowly. If the lid bows, the zipper catches or an accessory touches the console, repack or choose a larger case.
- Measure and weigh the finished bag. Record the exterior dimensions and weight, then compare them with the operating airline’s current allowance.
- Choose the travel position. For a plane, keep the case accessible as cabin baggage. For a car, put it on the restrained passenger-compartment floor or secure it with a seat belt.
Common problems and fixes
The case fits the console but not the installed shell
Measure the Ally X with the shell or grip attached and compare that measurement with the case’s usable cavity, not its external dimensions. If the padding must be removed or the lid presses on the shell, use a case with more internal clearance. Do not treat a tight fit as extra protection.
The charger makes the lid press down
Move the adapter and dock into a separate pocket. If the case has no protected accessory compartment, use a separate padded pouch rather than placing hard items over the handheld.
The case is too large for the personal-item allowance
Check whether the operating airline permits it as a carry-on and whether your ticket includes that allowance. If it does not, choose a smaller case that still protects the console, or carry the handheld in a compliant bag with a fitted protective sleeve. Never solve an airline-size problem by checking a bag containing the handheld or spare batteries.

Move it to the floor behind a front seat. If that is not possible, secure it with a seat belt or luggage strap and keep heavy accessories in separate pockets so they cannot impact the display.
The device is hot after the drive
Remove it from direct sunlight, leave it switched off and allow it to return toward room temperature before charging or powering it on. Do not place a hot device immediately into a tightly packed case.
You discover battery damage before departure
Do not fly with the device as packed. Isolate it from combustible materials, avoid charging it and contact the airline and manufacturer for safe handling instructions. FAA guidance requires a damaged or recalled device that could spark or generate dangerous heat to have its battery removed or otherwise made safe before carriage.
Final pre-departure checklist
- The case’s internal clearance exceeds 29.0 × 12.1 × 5.09 cm, with additional room for any shell or grip.
- The zipper or latch does not press the screen, sticks, triggers or power button.
- The Ally X is secured in a padded cradle or retention system.
- The 65 W USB-C adapter, dock and cables are separated from the display.
- The closed case’s external dimensions and packed weight meet the operating airline’s current cabin allowance.
- The 80 Wh built-in battery, every power bank and every spare battery remain in the cabin, with terminals protected.
- No battery-powered device is swollen, punctured, unusually hot or recalled.
- For a car, the case is on the passenger-compartment floor or restrained by a seat belt or luggage strap.
- The case is not visible in an unattended vehicle.
- You have checked for stricter airline or international requirements immediately before departure.
A measured, padded hard-shell ROG Xbox Ally X travel case gives the best balance of impact protection and organized packing, but only when its packed dimensions fit the carrier’s allowance. Keep the console and batteries with you on a plane, and keep the closed case restrained, cool and out of sight when driving.
