Store rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in a cool, dry room at normal indoor temperature, away from sunlight, hot vehicles, water and anything that burns. Keep spare or loose batteries from touching metal, charge only with the supplied or reputable compatible charger, and stop using any battery that becomes unusually hot, swells, cracks, leaks, smells strange, hisses or changes color.
Those precautions reduce the conditions that can trigger thermal runaway, a self-heating chain reaction that can spread from one failing cell to neighboring cells. If a lithium-ion battery is smoking or burning, leave immediately and call 911; do not try to extinguish it yourself.

What safe battery storage means
This guide focuses on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, power tools, e-bikes, scooters, drones and portable power stations. Lithium-ion packs contain cells, wiring and protective electronics; damage to any part can create heat or an internal short circuit. Disposable alkaline, nickel-metal hydride and other chemistries have different failure behavior, but their terminals should still be protected from short circuits and they should be kept away from heat and moisture.
For lithium-ion batteries, safe storage has four parts:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Temperature control: Keep batteries at room temperature whenever possible. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and NFPA guidance says not to charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C).
- Physical protection: Prevent crushing, puncturing, dropping and water exposure.
- Electrical protection: Keep exposed terminals from contacting keys, coins, tools or other conductive metal.
- Early detection: Inspect batteries and chargers for damage, swelling, odor, discoloration or excessive heat.
Room-temperature storage is a practical target, not a promise that a battery can never fail. A manufacturing defect, a damaged cell or a faulty charger can still create a dangerous condition, so inspection and correct charging remain necessary.
How thermal runaway starts and spreads
Thermal runaway is not simply a battery getting warm during normal use. OSHA defines it as a chain reaction in which heat released by the failure of one cell damages nearby cells. As neighboring cells heat up, they can vent gas, ignite or fail in turn. FAA summarizes the hazard plainly: “All lithium ion batteries are capable of overheating and undergoing a process called thermal runaway.”
Possible initiators identified by OSHA and FAA include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Manufacturing defects inside a cell or pack
- Mechanical damage from a fall, crush, puncture or impact
- Excessive heat or cold
- Improper charging, including an incompatible or damaged charger
- Water exposure or other contamination
- Failure to protect terminals, allowing an external short circuit
Heat can build faster than it can escape, especially when a damaged battery is surrounded by other materials or cells. A battery that appears to have stopped burning can reignite, which is why emergency responders should handle a suspected thermal-runaway event.
Choose a safe place to store batteries
Use a cool, dry indoor location
A cabinet or shelf in a dry room is generally preferable to a vehicle, attic, boiler room, furnace closet or unventilated shed. Keep batteries at ordinary room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Never leave a spare battery on a dashboard, in a parked car or beside a radiator; temperatures in those locations can exceed the recommended charging range and accelerate damage.

Keep batteries away from things that burn
Do not store batteries under piles of paper, clothing, bedding, cardboard or other combustible materials. Leave enough space to see and inspect each battery. Avoid placing a large battery pack where a failure could block an exit or expose sleeping occupants to smoke.
Keep storage dry
Water exposure is one of the conditions FAA identifies as a possible contributor to thermal runaway. Keep batteries away from sinks, damp basements, rain and condensation. If a battery or pack has been wet, stop using it and ask the manufacturer or an approved recycling program how it should be handled.
Separate batteries so damage is visible
Do not bury loose cells together in a drawer where a swollen or leaking unit could go unnoticed. Arrange batteries so labels, casing and terminals can be inspected without moving a heavy stack. Keep different devices’ chargers and batteries identified; using an unknown charger with the wrong voltage or chemistry creates avoidable risk.
| Storage condition | Safer practice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | Room temperature; do not charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C) | Extreme temperatures can damage cells and increase charging risk |
| Sun and vehicles | Keep out of direct sun and hot cars | Enclosed spaces can become dangerously hot |
| Moisture | Store dry; isolate any battery exposed to water | Water exposure is a possible thermal-runaway initiator |
| Combustibles | Keep clear of paper, fabric, fuel and other burnable material | Limits the consequences of a fire |
| Visibility | Leave packs accessible for routine inspection | Swelling, cracks, leaks and discoloration are easier to detect |
Charge batteries without creating unnecessary heat
Use the right charger
Use the charger supplied with the device or a compatible charger from a reputable supplier. Follow the device manufacturer’s instructions for charging, cable use and allowable accessories. A connector that fits physically is not proof that the charger has the correct voltage, current or communication protocol.
Charge on a stable, noncombustible surface
Place the device on a hard surface with ventilation around it while charging. Do not charge under a pillow, blanket or pile of clothing, where heat cannot escape. Keep the charger and cable away from water and inspect them for cuts, crushed sections, loose plugs or scorch marks.

Do not extend charging beyond the instructions
Do not leave a battery charging longer than the manufacturer recommends. If the instructions specify a charging time, temperature range or supervision requirement, follow those limits. Unplug the charger when the cycle is complete if the manufacturer instructs you to do so; do not use a damaged charger simply because the battery still appears to work.

Watch the battery during charging
Normal charging can make a device slightly warm, but a battery that becomes excessively hot, swells, emits an odor, makes an unusual noise or changes color is a stop-use warning. Disconnect power only if you can do so without touching a hot, smoking or damaged battery. Otherwise leave the area and call emergency services.
Protect loose batteries from short circuits
Loose cells and spare battery packs need terminal protection. FAA-approved methods include retaining the retail packaging, covering terminals with tape, or using a battery case, sleeve or protective pouch. The goal is to prevent positive and negative contacts from touching metal or each other.
- Identify the battery’s exposed terminals and inspect the casing for cracks, dents, leaks or swelling.
- Cover exposed terminals with nonconductive electrical tape, without wrapping a battery so tightly that its casing is crushed.
- Place each loose battery in its own compartment or protective package; do not mix unprotected cells with coins, keys, tools or screws.
- Keep protected batteries upright or otherwise arranged so terminals cannot rub against conductive objects.
- Inspect the tape, case and battery before each use; replace protection that is loose, torn or contaminated.
A lithium-ion battery storage case is useful when it isolates terminals, resists crushing and puncture, fits the battery’s dimensions and chemistry, and still allows inspection. A case is not a repair or containment system for a damaged, swollen, recalled or leaking battery. Remove such a battery from normal service and obtain handling instructions from the manufacturer or a local hazardous-waste or recycling program.
Recognize warning signs and decide what to do
USFA and OSHA identify several warning signs of battery failure. Treat any one of these as a reason to stop normal use:

- Leaking liquid, visible gas, vapor or smoke
- Popping, hissing or other unusual sounds
- Unusual chemical or sweet odor
- Discoloration, soot or melted plastic
- A battery that repeatedly shuts down, overheats or behaves abnormally
If the battery is warm but not visibly damaged
Stop charging and stop using the device. Disconnect it only if the plug or connector can be removed safely without handling a hot or distorted battery. Keep people and combustible items away, allow the device to cool naturally in a safe location, and contact the manufacturer if the heat returns or the cause is unclear.
If the battery is swollen, cracked, leaking or recalled
Do not puncture, squeeze, bend, open, repair or place the battery back into service. Do not put it in a household trash or recycling bin. Keep it away from heat and combustible materials without touching leaking fluid or a damaged casing, then contact the manufacturer, retailer collection program, municipal hazardous-waste service or battery-recycling center before transporting it. Tell the service that the battery is damaged, swollen or recalled so it can provide appropriate instructions.
If you see smoke, vapor, flames or hear hissing
Move away immediately and keep others away. Do not pick up, carry or cover a suspected thermal-runaway battery. A fire can reignite after it appears to be out, so wait for trained professionals and tell firefighters that a lithium-ion battery is involved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do during a lithium-ion battery fire
USFA’s direction is explicit: “If a lithium-ion battery fire occurs, don’t try to put it out. Evacuate and call 911 immediately.” Leave by a safe exit, close doors behind you if doing so does not delay escape, warn others and stay outside at a safe distance. Do not return for the device, attempt to move the battery outdoors, or use improvised water, sand or tools.
When calling 911, describe the device and battery if you know them, report smoke or flames, and mention whether the battery is in a vehicle, building or near other hazardous materials. Firefighters have equipment and procedures for cooling, isolating and monitoring batteries that may reignite.

Transporting spare batteries on an aircraft
FAA guidance treats spare lithium-ion batteries as carry-on items with specific watt-hour limits. Spare batteries over 101–160 Wh are limited to two per person on passenger aircraft, while batteries over 160 Wh are forbidden. Airlines can impose stricter requirements, so check the operating carrier’s current rules before traveling.
Protect every spare battery against short circuits by leaving it in retail packaging, covering terminals with tape, or placing it in a battery case, sleeve or protective pouch. Do not pack a loose spare battery where it can contact keys, coins, tools or another battery. If a battery is swollen, damaged, leaking or recalled, do not take it to the airport; ask the manufacturer or an approved disposal service for handling instructions.
Dispose of batteries through an approved channel
Never place lithium-ion batteries in household trash or ordinary curbside recycling. A battery can be crushed in a collection truck or sorting facility and start a fire. Use a local battery-recycling center, a retailer collection bin, a municipal program or an e-waste event, and confirm that the site accepts your battery’s chemistry and condition before delivery.

- Check the receiving program’s rules for lithium-ion batteries, loose cells and damaged packs.
- Protect terminals with tape or approved packaging if the program directs you to do so.
- Transport the battery exactly as instructed; do not mail or ship it unless the carrier and receiving program expressly permit that condition.
- For recalled or damaged batteries, contact the manufacturer first and follow its specialized instructions.
Acceptance rules vary by location and facility. A collection bin that accepts intact household batteries may reject swollen or damaged lithium-ion packs, so confirming in advance prevents an unsafe handoff.
Use standards and product information as risk checks
Safety markings are not a substitute for correct use, but they can help you evaluate a device or replacement battery. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission lists UL 1642 (6th Edition), UL 2743 (2nd Edition) and UL 62133 (2nd Edition) among relevant voluntary standards. Check the product documentation for the exact model, battery chemistry, charger requirements and warnings rather than relying on a generic listing or a connector that merely fits.
Keep the manufacturer’s instructions available for charging temperature, storage, inspection and disposal. If instructions conflict with an accessory seller’s claims, follow the device manufacturer and ask for clarification before charging.
A practical home storage checklist
- Choose a dry, room-temperature location away from direct sun, heaters and vehicles.
- Keep batteries visible and separated from paper, fabric, fuel and other combustibles.
- Store loose batteries in retail packaging, taped-terminal protection or a suitable case.
- Keep coins, keys, tools and metal fasteners away from exposed terminals.
- Use the supplied or reputable compatible charger on a hard, ventilated surface.
- Do not charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C).
- Inspect batteries and chargers for heat, swelling, cracks, leaks, odor, discoloration, smoke or unusual sounds.
- Stop using damaged, swollen, leaking or recalled batteries and obtain handling instructions.
- Evacuate and call 911 for smoke, fire, vapor, popping or suspected thermal runaway.
- Recycle batteries through a confirmed local program, never household trash.
These steps cannot eliminate every manufacturing or cell-level defect, but they remove common sources of heat, short circuits, mechanical damage and delayed detection.
