If your Chromebook is still responding, use the restart button in the update notification. If it is genuinely frozen, connect the charger if practical, then turn the Chromebook off and back on. That normal restart is Google’s first troubleshooting step and is far safer than a hard reset or ChromeOS recovery. Do not assume the update is frozen after a particular number of minutes: Google does not publish a fixed waiting threshold.
First decide whether the update is actually stuck
An update can appear quiet while ChromeOS finishes installing files. Before forcing anything, check whether the Chromebook accepts input or shows signs of activity. A responsive computer should follow the ordinary restart path, even if the screen has not changed for a while.

- Move the pointer, press a key, or try the touchpad. If the pointer moves or a menu opens, the system is responding.
- Look for an update notification that offers a restart. Google’s normal completion instruction is: “To complete the update, restart your Chromebook.”
- Notice whether the display changes, the keyboard responds, or the device reacts when you connect its charger.
- If an application still responds, save open work and close it normally before restarting.
- If nothing responds, the display is completely static, or the Chromebook will not open the power menu, treat it as unresponsive rather than merely waiting for the update.
Google’s support pages do not define an official number of minutes that proves an update is frozen. Keep the Chromebook connected to power when possible, but do not invent a timer-based rule or repeatedly interrupt a device that is still responding. A quiet screen alone is not enough to justify a forced shutdown.

Prepare for the least-destructive restart
If the Chromebook is still usable, make the restart as orderly as possible. Save documents to their normal location or approved cloud storage, record any visible error wording, and make sure you know the Wi-Fi network you normally use. If the device is managed by a school or employer, note that before taking any step beyond a normal restart; an administrator may have a required process.
Connect the charger whenever practical. Google recommends a power connection to help prevent interruptions while ChromeOS updates. Power does not cure a frozen interface, but it removes a low-battery interruption as one possible complication. Do not buy recovery equipment or start a reset simply because an update notification appeared.
Use the least destructive restart first
When the screen and controls respond
- Save any open work if applications still allow it.
- Select the restart option in the update notification, or open the system menu and choose the on-screen power or restart command available on your Chromebook.
- Leave the charger connected while ChromeOS restarts and completes the update.
- Let the normal shutdown and startup sequence run. Wait for the sign-in screen to return before pressing keys, closing the lid, or trying another command.
- After signing in, confirm that the desktop loads and that your network and essential applications work.
This path lets ChromeOS shut down services and finish the installation normally. A normal restart is the appropriate action when the Chromebook is responsive; there is no reason to use a hardware key combination just because an update notification appeared. Dismissing the notification repeatedly also does not complete the update—the intended completion path is to restart when ChromeOS asks.

- Connect the charger if you can do so safely and conveniently. Google recommends a power connection to help prevent interruptions during updates.
- Hold the physical power button until the Chromebook turns off. The exact button location varies by model.
- After it has shut down, press the power button once to start it again.
- Allow ChromeOS to boot and check whether the update resumes, completes, or displays an error.
Google’s freeze guidance starts with turning the Chromebook off and back on. It does not prescribe a special “interrupt update” procedure or a mandatory waiting period. Avoid repeatedly forcing power-off cycles; one controlled restart gives the system the best chance to recover cleanly. If the power button does not produce a response, do not immediately assume that recovery is required; proceed to the later troubleshooting steps instead.
See Google’s hardware and system-problem troubleshooting for the general freeze procedure and escalation guidance.
What to do after the normal restart
The next action depends on what appears after boot. Use the branch that matches the symptom instead of jumping directly to recovery. Keep any error message on screen or written down; exact wording helps a manufacturer or administrator identify the next supported step.

The update completed
Sign in and verify that the Chromebook reaches the desktop normally. Check that your network connection and essential applications work. Open important local files, including anything you keep in Downloads, and confirm that they are present. No further reset is needed if the update finished and the device is responsive.
An update error appears or the download fails
Google’s update troubleshooting sequence moves from a restart to connection troubleshooting, then to a Chromebook reset, and only afterward to recovery. Reconnect to a reliable Wi-Fi network, confirm that the charger is attached, and retry the update from the notification or Settings. If the same error returns, follow the reset instructions in Google’s update guide rather than improvising with repeated hard shutdowns.
Connection troubleshooting belongs before a hard reset because a failed download can be a network or power interruption rather than a damaged operating system. Complete each less-invasive step and observe the result. If the reset step is reached, read its warnings carefully and back up accessible local files first.
The Chromebook still freezes
Use the additional checks in Google’s hardware-and-system troubleshooting page. If the problem continues after those steps, Google recommends contacting the Chromebook manufacturer for model-specific support. Keep the model name, the point at which the freeze occurs, and any on-screen error text available when you contact support. Manufacturer guidance is especially important when the standard Refresh-and-Power combination differs on a particular model.
Restart, hard reset, and recovery are not interchangeable
These actions escalate in both invasiveness and data risk. Choose the least destructive option that addresses the symptom, and do not treat a more destructive operation as a faster version of a normal restart.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Action | When to use it | What it changes | Data risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal off/on restart | First response to a freeze or update error; also the normal way to finish a responsive update | Shuts down and starts ChromeOS through its ordinary power controls | Google’s first-line guidance does not state that it erases files |
| Hardware hard reset | Only after other troubleshooting has failed and the Chromebook remains problematic | Resets hardware components rather than following a normal software shutdown | May delete files in the Downloads folder |
| ChromeOS recovery | Last resort after less-invasive fixes fail or ChromeOS is damaged | Removes and reinstalls ChromeOS | Permanently erases local data on the Chromebook’s drive |
The normal restart is the only one of these three that is part of the ordinary update-completion path. The hard reset is a later troubleshooting measure, and recovery is a reinstall. Moving down the table without first trying the earlier row increases the chance of unnecessary data loss.

Use a hardware hard reset only as a later step
Google describes a hard reset as a way to reset Chromebook hardware after other fixes fail. It is different from turning the Chromebook off and back on, and Google warns that it might delete files in Downloads. Copy important local files elsewhere first if the Chromebook can still start or respond. Files stored elsewhere, such as approved cloud storage, are not the specific target of Google’s Downloads warning, but verify your backups before proceeding.
- Turn the Chromebook off completely.
- Press and hold the Refresh key. On most Chromebooks this is the key with a circular-arrow icon in the top row.
- While holding Refresh, tap the Power button.
- Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.
Some models use different hardware-reset instructions. If this key combination does not match your device, use the model-specific directions in Google’s Chromebook hardware-reset guide instead of trying combinations at random. Do not use the hard reset merely because the update is taking longer than you expected; there is no published time threshold that makes it mandatory.
If the machine boots normally afterward, inspect the Downloads folder and confirm that important files are present before retrying the update. If the hard reset does not solve the freeze, return to Google’s troubleshooting sequence and manufacturer support rather than repeating the key combination indefinitely.
Reserve ChromeOS recovery for a last resort
Recovery is substantially more destructive than either kind of restart. It removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases data stored on the Chromebook’s internal drive, including downloaded files. Back up anything you can still access before starting. Recovery is not a routine update restart and is not warranted solely because the first reboot did not immediately show the desktop.
When recovery is justified
- The update and connection troubleshooting steps fail repeatedly.
- The Chromebook cannot boot into ChromeOS or remains unusable after a hard reset.
- Google’s troubleshooting instructions direct you to reinstall ChromeOS.
What you need
If the recovery process uses external media, Google specifies a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating recovery media erases that USB drive as well, so use one that contains no needed files. The drive is a conditional recovery expense, not a requirement for an ordinary restart or a normal update. No particular manufacturer or model is required by the guidance cited here.
Important ownership and administration checks
Managed work or school Chromebooks should be handled by the organization’s administrator. Recovery can affect enrollment and locally stored data, and an administrator may have a required process or backup. Personal Chromebook owners should still read the on-screen warnings and confirm that local files have been copied before proceeding.

Follow the current procedure in Google’s Chromebook recovery guide. Do not begin recovery merely because an update took longer than expected, because the screen was briefly quiet, or because the first restart did not immediately show the desktop. Once recovery starts, the internal-drive erasure cannot be undone.

Common situations and the safest response
The update notification offers “Restart”
Choose that on-screen restart. It is the normal completion path and preserves the intended update sequence.
The screen is frozen, but the Chromebook is plugged in
Power helps prevent interruptions, but it does not make a frozen interface responsive. If controls do not react, perform the controlled off/on restart described above. Do not confuse being plugged in with proof that the update is still progressing.
The Chromebook restarts to the same update error
Move to network troubleshooting and the later steps in Google’s update sequence. Do not escalate directly to recovery unless those less-invasive steps fail or Google’s instructions call for it. Record the recurring error so support can distinguish a download problem from a broader system problem.
A hard reset seems necessary, but Downloads contains important files
Do not use the hard-reset key combination until you have copied those files, if the Chromebook can still be made usable. Google’s warning specifically identifies Downloads as a possible casualty. If the files cannot be copied, weigh that risk before proceeding and seek manufacturer or administrator guidance.
You have no backup and recovery is the only remaining option
Stop and assess whether the device can boot far enough to copy files. Recovery permanently erases local storage; proceed only after accepting that loss or after an administrator or support professional confirms the next step. Also remember that creating recovery media erases the USB drive used for setup.

You are considering buying a USB drive immediately
Do not buy one for a normal restart. An 8 GB-or-larger USB flash drive matters only if the official recovery process later requires external media. Recovery still erases the Chromebook’s local data, so the purchase does not make recovery a low-risk option.
Preventing another interrupted update
- Start updates when the Chromebook can remain connected to its charger.
- Use a stable internet connection and avoid moving out of Wi-Fi range during the download.
- When ChromeOS displays a restart request, select it rather than repeatedly dismissing the notification.
- Keep important files out of Downloads only, or copy them to approved cloud or external storage before maintenance.
- For managed devices, follow your school or employer’s update policy and contact the administrator when errors recur.
These precautions reduce interruption risk but cannot guarantee that an update will never fail. If a failure does occur, return to the least destructive branch: normal restart, connection and reset troubleshooting, hard reset only later, and recovery last.
Quick decision checklist
- Responding? Save work if possible and use the update notification’s restart command.
- Unresponsive? Connect power if practical, turn it off, then turn it on once.
- Error after reboot? Troubleshoot the connection and follow Google’s reset sequence.
- Still frozen after other fixes? Consider the hardware hard reset, remembering the Downloads warning and checking model-specific instructions.
- Nothing else works? Back up what you can, involve an administrator when applicable, and use ChromeOS recovery only as the final measure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google specify how long to wait before calling an update frozen?
No. Google’s Chromebook help pages do not publish a fixed number of minutes. Judge the situation by whether the screen and controls still respond, not by an invented timer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill a normal restart erase my Chromebook files?
Google’s first-line freeze and update instructions do not say that a normal off/on restart erases files. The explicit data-loss warnings apply to later hard-reset and recovery procedures.
Can I recover a Chromebook without a USB drive?
Google says external recovery media may require a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Follow the recovery guide for the method available to your model.
Should I hard-reset a Chromebook as soon as an update appears stuck?
No. First use the normal restart if controls respond, or turn the Chromebook off and back on if it is frozen. Google places the hardware hard reset after other fixes and warns that it might delete files in Downloads.
What should I do if the update fails again after restarting?
Follow Google’s sequence: troubleshoot the connection, then use the Chromebook reset step, and consider recovery only afterward. Contact the manufacturer if the Chromebook continues to freeze.
Recommended Free Tools
Is recovery safe for a work or school Chromebook?
Do not start it without consulting the administrator. Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local data, and managed devices may have enrollment or backup requirements.
The Bottom Line
Use the restart offered by ChromeOS when the Chromebook responds. If it is frozen, connect power if practical and turn it off and on once. Troubleshoot connection and reset issues before considering a hard reset, and reserve recovery—with its permanent data erasure and possible 8 GB USB requirement—for the final step.
