You can receive gifted bitcoin without buying any yourself. You need either a receiving address generated by a wallet you control or a deposit address supplied by a custodial service. Give the sender only that public address, verify the complete address before the transaction is broadcast, and wait for confirmations before treating the payment as settled.
The wallet does not contain physical coins. Bitcoin remains recorded on the network; the wallet stores or accesses the keys that authorize spending. Your main safety decisions are who controls those keys, how you back them up, and how you verify that the sender paid the intended destination.

What you need before someone sends the gift
A sender cannot pay you using your name, email address, or a phone number alone. They need a Bitcoin receiving address, usually shown as a long string of letters and numbers or as a QR code. Your wallet generates the address; you copy or display it for the sender.

An address is public payment information. You may share it with the person sending the gift. A private key and recovery phrase are different: they are secrets that authorize control of the bitcoin associated with the wallet. A PIN, wallet password, or device-unlock code is also private. Never send any of these to the giver, a support agent, or a website claiming to verify your payment.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Addresses should ideally be used only once for privacy. Most current wallets can generate a fresh address whenever you select Receive. Use the address shown by the wallet for this specific gift rather than copying one from an old transaction.
Decide who will control the keys
Before receiving anything, choose between self-custody and custodial storage. With self-custody, your wallet gives you control of the private keys and recovery phrase. You are responsible for protecting them and for restoring the wallet if your phone or computer is lost. With a custodian, a company holds the keys while you access the balance through an account. That can be simpler, but your access depends on the company’s security, solvency, identity checks, and withdrawal rules.
This choice is not permanent in every case: you may later withdraw bitcoin from a custodian to a self-custody wallet, subject to the custodian’s policies and fees. Do not assume that an account balance at a service is equivalent to holding keys yourself.
Self-custody and custodial storage compared
| Question | Self-custody wallet | Custodial account |
|---|---|---|
| Who holds the keys? | You, through the wallet and its backup | The provider; you receive account access |
| What happens if your device is lost? | Restore from the wallet’s documented recovery method | Use the provider’s account-recovery process, if available |
| Main failure to plan for | Lost or stolen recovery phrase, malware, or an incorrect backup | Provider breach, insolvency, frozen withdrawals, or account loss |
| Setup | More responsibility during initialization and backup | Usually faster account setup, often with identity checks |
| Fees | Receiving has no Bitcoin network fee; later spending still requires a network fee | Deposit, conversion, withdrawal, or account fees may apply under the provider’s schedule |
| Privacy | On-chain activity is public and can become linked to your identity | The provider may associate transactions with your account and may require identity information |
Neither arrangement removes all risk. Choose the one whose recovery process you can actually follow. A small gift that you expect to spend soon may be manageable in a well-protected wallet app. A larger amount that you intend to hold for years may justify an offline signing device and a carefully tested backup, provided you understand the extra responsibility.
When a hardware wallet makes sense
A hardware wallet keeps key operations on a dedicated device that is normally kept offline. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as “the best balance between very high security and ease of use.” That is a general security description, not a guarantee that every device or seller is safe. You still have to verify addresses on the device, protect the recovery phrase, install authentic software, and obtain the device through a trustworthy channel.
Hardware storage is optional. It does not make funds invulnerable, and it can create new failure modes if you lose the device and its backup or misunderstand the restore process. For a modest amount, a reputable wallet app with a properly protected backup may be proportionate to your risk. For savings, separating an offline signing device from the everyday phone or computer can reduce exposure to online malware.
How to receive the bitcoin safely
1. Set up the wallet or custodial account
For self-custody, download the wallet from its official source, initialize it, and follow its setup flow. During setup, the wallet will normally show a recovery phrase or another documented backup method. Write it down privately before generating the receiving address. Do not let anyone watch, photograph, or record this step.

For a custodian, create the account through the provider’s normal sign-up process and complete any required verification. Find the Bitcoin deposit or receive screen, not a deposit screen for another network or asset. Different services support different address formats and networks; the sender must use the Bitcoin network that the destination explicitly identifies.
Do not create a “test” transfer merely because a guide suggests it. Fees, address formats, minimum deposits, and wallet interfaces vary. If you decide a test payment is appropriate, agree on its amount and network with the sender first and treat the resulting transaction like any other payment.
2. Generate a fresh receiving address
- Open the wallet or account and select Receive, Deposit, or the equivalent Bitcoin option.
- Confirm that the asset is Bitcoin and that the displayed network is Bitcoin. Do not use an address for a different cryptocurrency or a different network.
- Generate a new address for this gift. If a payment request lets you specify an amount or expiration, check those details before sharing it.
- Copy the address using the wallet’s copy control or show the QR code directly. Keep the screen private enough that another person cannot substitute an address.
Receiving bitcoin itself does not incur a Bitcoin network fee according to Bitcoin.org’s individual-user guidance. That statement does not cover a custodian’s deposit, conversion, withdrawal, or account charges, nor does it mean that sending the bitcoin later is free.
3. Send the receiving information through a safe channel
Send the address or payment request to the giver in a channel where you can clearly identify the message. If you use a QR code, have the sender scan the one displayed by your wallet rather than one copied from an old image. The address is safe to share publicly, but avoid posting it unnecessarily because address activity is visible on the public ledger.

A legitimate wallet or support team does not need those secrets to send you bitcoin.
4. Verify the complete address before broadcast
Bitcoin transactions are difficult to reverse. Before the sender presses Send, compare the entire destination address in the sender’s confirmation screen with the address generated by your wallet. Checking only the first and last few characters is not enough.
Address-poisoning scams place transactions to lookalike addresses in a wallet’s history. A scammer hopes you will copy a familiar-looking address from an old transfer instead of generating a new one. Always use the fresh address from the current Receive screen and perform the full comparison. If the sender’s screen shows a different address, stop and resolve the discrepancy through a channel you already trust.

For a large gift, make the verification a two-person procedure: you read the address from your wallet while the sender independently confirms every character on the send screen. A hardware wallet can display the destination address for an additional check, but you should still understand what the device is showing.
5. Record the transaction identifier
After the sender broadcasts the payment, the sender’s wallet should provide a transaction ID, often called a TXID. Keep it for troubleshooting, but do not treat possession of a TXID as proof that the payment is final. You can look up the transaction in your wallet’s details view or, when necessary, in a reputable Bitcoin block explorer. Avoid entering your recovery phrase into any explorer or “verification” page.
How to know the bitcoin arrived
Pending is not confirmed
Your wallet may show an incoming transaction as pending or unconfirmed as soon as it sees the broadcast. That means the network has detected it; it has not yet been included in a block. A confirmation occurs when miners include the transaction in a block. Each later block adds another confirmation.
Bitcoin.org’s general explainer says a first confirmation often takes about 10 to 60 minutes. That is an undated operational estimate, not a promise. Block production is probabilistic: there is no guaranteed minimum or maximum delay. A transaction with low fee priority may wait longer, especially when the network is busy.
How many confirmations are enough?
The appropriate number depends on the gift’s value, your ability to tolerate a reversal risk, and any rule imposed by a service that will accept the funds. Bitcoin.org’s vocabulary guidance says one confirmation may be considered secure for a low-value transaction, while higher-value transfers may warrant six or more. Its separate user guidance describes six confirmations as a minimum recommendation for high-value transfers.
Recommended Free Tools
These are Bitcoin.org’s educational guidelines, not a universal guarantee or a threshold enforced by every wallet. For a gift you are simply holding, wait for the number of confirmations you and the sender agreed on before considering the transfer settled. If a custodian shows a deposit as pending, its own crediting policy may require more confirmations than your wallet does.
If the transaction remains pending
- Confirm that the sender used the Bitcoin network and the address you generated, not an old or mismatched address.
- Check the transaction ID in the wallet or a reputable explorer to see whether it is visible on the network.
- Look at the fee and fee rate if the wallet displays them. A low-priority transaction can take longer.
- Do not pay anyone who claims they can “unlock” a pending transaction by sending a release fee. A request for additional bitcoin to release a gift is a scam warning.
- If the transaction is not visible at all, ask the sender to verify that the send action was actually broadcast and to provide the TXID through your established channel.
Protect the recovery phrase and plan for recovery
Anyone who obtains the recovery phrase can generally restore and control the corresponding wallet. Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance states: “no legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key.” Treat an unexpected request for either as an attempted theft.

Make an offline backup
- Write the phrase exactly as displayed, in the exact order, using the wallet’s documented format. Do not add words, remove words, or rely on memory.
- Keep the written backup offline and private. Do not photograph it, email it, store it in a notes app, paste it into a website, or place it in cloud storage as an unencrypted file.
- Protect it from theft, fire, water, and accidental disposal. For a valuable balance, consider two secure locations so one disaster does not destroy the only copy, while ensuring that no unauthorized person can assemble or access it.
- Read the wallet’s recovery instructions and understand whether it uses an additional passphrase, account type, derivation path, or another setting. A phrase alone may not restore the same addresses if those details are omitted.
- Where the wallet supports a safe recovery check, verify the backup according to its instructions before depositing a substantial amount. Never type the phrase into a random “backup checker.”
Bitcoin.org recommends secure backups, multiple secure locations to avoid a single point of failure, and encryption for any backup exposed to a network. Encryption reduces exposure but does not defeat every form of malware or keylogging. A device infected with malware can still capture a phrase when you type it.
Secure the device and wallet
- Use a strong, unique device and wallet password, and enable the strongest multi-factor authentication available on a custodial account.
- Install operating-system and wallet updates from the wallet’s normal update path.
- Keep everyday browsing, gaming, and unknown downloads away from the device used for substantial self-custody funds when practical.
- Verify payment addresses on the wallet or hardware device itself; clipboard malware can replace an address after you copy it.
- Do not disclose your PIN or password to someone offering remote support.
Scams to recognize before and after the gift
“Send some back” or “pay a release fee” requests
A stranger may claim that a gift was sent accidentally, that you must return part of it to prove ownership, or that a tax, miner, insurance, or release fee is required before you can use it. Do not send a second payment based only on a message or a pending wallet notification. Verify the original transaction and the sender’s identity through an independent channel. Because Bitcoin payments are difficult to reverse, a hurried return can leave you out of pocket even if the first transaction later disappears or was never broadcast.

Fake support and recovery services
Support impersonators commonly ask for a seed phrase, private key, remote access, or a screenshot of your wallet. Refuse. Close the conversation and contact the service through the contact path shown inside the official wallet or account interface. No legitimate support team needs your recovery secret.
Lookalike addresses and QR codes
Malware, compromised messages, and altered QR codes can substitute an attacker’s address. Generate a fresh address in your wallet, compare the complete string before broadcast, and confirm the network and asset. Do not trust an address merely because it resembles one used previously.

Keep a small spending balance in a wallet app
A wallet app can be practical for an amount you could afford to lose if the phone is compromised, lost, or incorrectly restored. Keep only the amount needed for near-term use, maintain the documented backup offline, and separate the app from the device where you perform risky downloads or enter unknown websites.
Move long-term savings to offline storage
For savings, an offline signing device can reduce online attack exposure. Buy through an authentic channel, inspect the device and its initialization instructions, and verify receiving and change addresses on the device when making transactions. The security benefit depends on your operational discipline: a stolen recovery phrase defeats the device, and a lost or incorrect backup can make the balance unrecoverable.
Leave the balance with a custodian deliberately
A custodial account may be reasonable when you value easier access or do not feel able to manage a recovery phrase. Enable strong multi-factor authentication, learn how account recovery works, and read the provider’s withdrawal limits, holds, fees, and supported Bitcoin networks. Keep records needed to recover the account, but never store the provider’s password and recovery phrase together in an exposed location. Remember that a custodian can pause withdrawals or fail, so the balance carries provider risk in addition to Bitcoin price risk.

Costs, privacy, and tax questions
Costs
There is no Bitcoin network fee simply for receiving a payment, according to Bitcoin.org’s individual-user guidance. Fees can arise when the sender broadcasts the transaction, when you later spend it, or when a custodian converts, withdraws, or transfers it. A wallet’s displayed fee estimate may change with network conditions. Check the actual fee and network before approving a later send.
Privacy
Bitcoin’s ledger is public. An address does not automatically show your name, but address activity can become associated with your identity through a custodian, messages, or public postings. Use fresh addresses, avoid publishing the address with personal details, and understand that combining transactions can reveal relationships between addresses. Do not promise yourself or the sender anonymity simply because a payment uses a Bitcoin address.
Taxes
Tax treatment for a gifted bitcoin depends on your jurisdiction, the giver’s jurisdiction, the gift’s value and basis, and what you do with the bitcoin later. There is no universal tax conclusion. Keep the date, amount, transaction ID, and any information the giver can provide about acquisition and value, then consult a qualified local tax professional before selling, exchanging, or spending the bitcoin.

The sender says it was sent, but nothing appears
- Ask for the TXID and confirm that the destination address exactly matches your current receiving address.
- Check that the sender selected Bitcoin rather than another asset or network.
- Refresh the wallet or allow time for it to synchronize, then check a reputable explorer.
- If there is no transaction on the network, the sender may have saved a draft or failed to broadcast it; contact the sender’s wallet support without sharing your secrets.
The address shown by the sender is different
Stop the transfer. Generate a new address, send it through a trusted channel, and compare the complete string again. Do not attempt to “fix” a mismatched address by editing characters. If malware repeatedly replaces copied addresses, stop using the affected device for the transfer and investigate it from a clean device.
You lost the phone or computer
Install the same wallet software from its official source on a clean replacement device and follow its documented restore procedure using your offline backup. Confirm that the restored wallet shows the expected addresses before transacting. If the device or phrase may have been exposed, move funds to a newly initialized wallet as soon as you can do so safely. For a custodial account, use the provider’s account-recovery process and revoke old sessions where possible.
You exposed the recovery phrase
Assume the wallet is compromised. From a clean environment, create a new wallet with a new recovery method, secure its backup, and transfer the funds to a fresh address. Do not continue using the exposed wallet merely because the balance has not yet moved; an attacker may be waiting.
Final receiving checklist
- Choose self-custody or a custodian before the sender pays.
- Generate a fresh Bitcoin receiving address or the correct custodial deposit address.
- Share only the address or payment request, never the recovery phrase, private key, PIN, or password.
- Compare the complete destination address and network before broadcast.
- Keep the TXID and distinguish pending from confirmed.
- Wait for a confirmation level appropriate to the gift’s value and your risk tolerance.
- Keep the recovery backup offline, private, and protected against physical loss.
- Ignore requests for release fees, urgent returns, remote access, or recovery secrets.
The safest process is deliberate rather than complicated: generate the destination yourself, verify every character, confirm the transaction on the network, and store the recovery method as carefully as the bitcoin itself. Choose a wallet or custodian whose risks and recovery rules you understand, then keep only the exposure you are prepared to manage.
