Observe crocodiles and bats from a distance, stay quiet, and let the animals choose where to move. Do not approach, touch, feed, attract, or unnecessarily illuminate them. There is no single safe viewing distance for every species or location: follow local rules and leave more space if an animal reacts to you.
Start with distance, quiet, and local rules
Before visiting, check warning signs and the guidance for the specific park, waterway, or wildlife site. Distances and restrictions vary by place. The U.S. National Park Service advises that if wildlife reacts to your presence, you are too close; use binoculars or camera zoom rather than moving nearer. - Keep a clear route open for the animal to leave. Do not crowd, follow, or position yourself or a boat to block its path.
- Keep voices low. Do not use calls, food, or other attractants to bring wildlife closer.
- Avoid unnecessary artificial light, especially around nocturnal animals. California wildlife officials note that artificial light can disturb nocturnal wildlife and change insect behavior.
- Use binoculars or zoom, and do not let a better view become a reason to approach or use flash.
How to watch crocodiles safely
On or near the water
Crocodiles require especially conservative viewing because close encounters can be dangerous. In Queensland, recreational boating guidance says to keep arms and legs inside a boat, use the boat as a barrier near water, avoid kayaks, paddleboards, and other small craft in crocodile habitat, and never bring a boat within 10 metres of a wild crocodile. That is Queensland boat-safety advice, not a universal distance for people, other activities, or other locations. Do not change the crocodile’s behavior
Never feed, touch, provoke, or try to attract a crocodile. Keep clear of its route to water, and do not pursue one that is swimming. Keep noise and wake low; never throw anything to bring an animal closer for a photograph. If a crocodile approaches or its behavior changes, increase distance or withdraw rather than trying to hold a viewing position.

Commercial viewing rules in Queensland
Queensland’s version 1.01 Code of Practice: Wildlife management: Commercial Crocodile Viewing sets additional requirements for commercial operators. These figures apply to that code, not to visitors generally or to other jurisdictions.

The code also requires operators not to attract or touch crocodiles or block their escape route. Operators must idle in neutral if a crocodile is in a moving vessel’s path or approaches, and stop or withdraw if its behavior changes. Night-viewing rules are separate from daytime viewing requirements.

How to watch bats without disturbing a roost
Watch quietly from a respectful distance. Do not handle bats or approach a roost to improve your view. California Department of Fish and Wildlife says bats should be handled only by trained professionals using personal protective equipment and recommends keeping pets confined or leashed. Keep lighting to what is necessary; the available guidance does not set a universal flashlight brightness, beam duration, or viewing distance for bats. Avoid flash and do not shine a light into a roost. If a bat appears sick or injured, leave it alone and contact local wildlife authorities. If a person or pet has had direct contact with a bat, do not handle it; follow local public-health guidance. California’s advice directs people to notify the local health department after a bite, scratch, or saliva exposure.

Check protections for roosts and resting places
Rules depend on where you are. In the UK, bats and their breeding and resting places are protected; prohibited actions include intentional or reckless disturbance in a shelter and damaging or destroying a breeding or resting place. The legal framework can differ among UK nations, and licensing rules may apply. Outside the UK, check the relevant local authority rather than assuming the same legal protections apply.

- Local rules and distance: Does the site explain its applicable restrictions and keep visitors at a suitable distance?
- Animal movement: Can the animal leave freely, without a visitor, vessel, or viewing setup blocking its route?
- Noise, wake, and light: Does the method avoid loud activity, unnecessary wake, and artificial illumination?
- Sensitive areas: Does it keep clear of nests, hatchling groups, bat roosts, and other breeding or resting sites?

For coastal wildlife visits in England, the Marine and coastal wildlife code: advice for visitors recommends distant viewing with binoculars or zoom. Choose a lawful, low-impact option where one is available, and let local park or wildlife guidance take precedence.
