To move cryptocurrency into a genuinely new hardware wallet, initialize the destination as a new wallet, write down its newly generated recovery words offline, and transfer assets to new receive addresses. Restoring the old recovery phrase on the destination does not move funds or create new keys—it recreates access to the existing wallet. For a large balance, verify every address and network on the device itself, send a small test transaction, wait for confirmation, and only then move the remainder.
First decide whether you need a restore or a migration
Two procedures are often described as moving crypto, but they have different security results.

| Goal | What you do | Keys and addresses | Blockchain transfers and fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replace a lost, damaged or inconvenient device | Restore the existing recovery phrase on a compatible device or wallet application. | The same wallet keys and addresses return. The phrase is not made new. | Usually no on-chain transfer is needed. |
| Rotate to a fresh wallet | Initialize the destination hardware wallet as a new wallet, back up its new recovery words, then send assets from the old wallet. | New keys and new receive addresses are created. | Every asset moved on-chain incurs the applicable network fee and requires careful address and network checks. |
If you are only replacing hardware and still trust the old recovery phrase, restoring is operationally simpler. If the phrase may have been exposed, you want to retire the old keys, or you deliberately want a clean wallet, create a new wallet and transfer the funds. Trezor’s migration guidance describes this approach as setting up a new wallet and transferring funds to it: official migration instructions.
What you need before sending anything
- The destination hardware wallet, its current official setup software, and a cable or connection method supported by that device.
- A private place to write and store the destination recovery words. Anyone who obtains these words can generally control the wallet.
- Access to the old wallet and enough of the network’s native currency to pay transaction fees. A token balance alone may not be enough to send that token.
- An inventory of every asset, account, network, collectible, staking position and decentralized-application position held by the old wallet.
- Time to perform a small test transfer and wait for its blockchain confirmation before moving a large balance.
Do not begin by entering a recovery phrase into a website, chat, email, browser form or unsolicited support page. Keep both the old and new phrases offline and private. If a person or service asks you to reveal a phrase or private key, stop.

Step 1: initialize the destination as a new wallet
- Obtain the hardware wallet through a trustworthy channel and inspect its packaging and device prompts. Follow the manufacturer’s current setup flow rather than an unverified video or search advertisement.
- Choose the option to create a new wallet, not restore an existing wallet. The device should generate a fresh recovery backup internally. Trezor states that its new-wallet backup is generated offline on the device: Trezor’s guide.
- Write the recovery words exactly as displayed, in the order shown, on the supplied or otherwise durable offline backup medium. Complete the device’s backup-verification exercise before continuing.
- Store the backup where it cannot be photographed, copied or reached by unauthorized people. Do not keep the only copy in cloud storage or a password manager unless you have deliberately accepted the security trade-off.
- Set the device PIN or other local access control required by the hardware wallet. This protects the physical device, but it does not replace the recovery backup.
- Install only the wallet application needed for the assets you intend to manage, and update the device firmware and application through the vendor’s current official process.
Do not confuse a PIN, passphrase or app password with the recovery words. Losing the recovery backup can permanently remove access if the device is lost or damaged; exposing it can let an attacker spend the funds without the device.
Step 2: make a complete asset and account inventory
Before generating addresses, record what the old wallet actually contains. A wallet can control multiple accounts and networks, and the visible portfolio total may omit positions held elsewhere.
| Inventory item | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Native coins | Asset, account, network and approximate balance | The receiving account and fee currency must match the network. |
| Tokens | Token name, contract or mint identifier, account and network | Identically named tokens can exist on different networks; unsupported or incorrect networks can make funds inaccessible. |
| Collectibles | Collection, token identifier, chain and holding account | They require their own transfers rather than being included in a fungible-token transaction. |
| Staking or delegated funds | Validator or delegation, lock or unbonding status, and destination support | These positions may require an unstake, withdrawal or separate migration action. |
| DeFi and connected-app positions | Protocol, chain, claimable balances and open positions | A wallet transfer does not automatically move a position controlled by a smart contract. |
| Dust and fee reserves | Small balances and native currency left for transaction fees | Sending every unit can leave no currency to pay the final transaction. |
Check the destination wallet’s current asset and network support for each line item. Support can differ by device, firmware, companion application and network; an asset being visible in the old wallet does not establish that the destination supports it. BitBox’s migration instructions likewise recommend listing accounts, assets and networks before creating a fresh wallet: BitBox guidance.

Do not select a network merely because its fee is lower. Step 3: create and verify a receiving address
- Unlock the destination hardware wallet and open the account for the exact asset and network in its companion application.
- Select the receive function and display the full address. Do not rely only on an address copied from a computer screen.
- Compare the address shown by the application with the address shown on the hardware wallet’s own trusted display. Approve only when they match character-for-character. Trezor specifically advises verifying the receiving address on the device: Trezor’s migration guide.
- Copy or scan the verified address into the old wallet’s send form. Avoid manually retyping a long address.
- Confirm the network label on both sides. An address format that looks familiar is not proof that the network is correct.
Address-replacement malware can alter a clipboard address after you copy it. Checking the complete destination on the hardware screen is the control that catches this class of error. If the application and device show different addresses, cancel the operation and investigate; do not approve a transaction to resolve the discrepancy.
Step 4: send a small test transaction
For any substantial balance, test the complete route before committing the rest.
- In the old wallet, choose the asset and account recorded in your inventory.
- Paste the verified destination address and select the same network shown by the destination account.
- Enter a small amount that is large enough to identify the transfer but small enough that an error is tolerable. Include the expected network fee in your calculation.
- Review the destination address, asset, network, amount and fee on the old wallet and, where applicable, confirm the transaction details on its signing device.
- Submit the transaction and save its transaction ID or hash.
- Wait for the network to confirm it. Then open the destination account and verify that the correct asset and amount arrived.
A wallet interface may show a pending transaction before the network has finalized it. Do not treat a pending status as receipt, and do not send the remainder until the destination account shows the confirmed transfer. Confirmation requirements and waiting times vary by network; consult the current official documentation for the specific chain.

- Open the destination account for the exact asset and network.
- Verify the receive address on the hardware wallet’s display again, especially if you generated a new account or the application has been reinstalled.
- In the old wallet, select the matching asset, account and network. Enter the intended amount and leave enough native currency for the fee.
- Before signing, inspect the full destination address, network, amount, fee, nonce or transaction details shown by the wallet. On-chain transactions generally cannot be canceled or reversed after submission; Kraken explains this limitation in its wallet FAQ: Kraken Wallet FAQs.
- Sign only on the old wallet’s trusted device or confirmed interface. Never approve a transaction whose details you did not initiate.
- Record the transaction ID, wait for confirmation, and mark the item as received in your inventory.
Send fungible tokens separately from collectibles or other positions unless the wallet explicitly provides a safe, documented batch function. A token transfer does not move a staking delegation, liquidity-pool position or other contract-controlled asset. Follow the relevant protocol’s withdrawal or migration procedure, and verify that the destination supports that position before closing the old wallet.
Fees, reserves and network mismatches
There is no universal migration fee. The amount depends on the network, congestion, transaction size, fee market and the asset or operation being sent. A token transfer commonly requires the network’s native coin in the sending account, even when the token itself has a different name. Keep a fee reserve until the inventory audit is complete.
- Insufficient native balance: obtain a small amount of the network’s native currency through a trusted route, or reduce the amount sent so the fee can be paid.
- Unsupported network: stop rather than choosing a similarly named network. Determine whether the destination supports the original network; if not, use a documented exchange or bridge only after understanding its separate risks.
- Wrong token contract: compare the contract or mint identifier, not just the ticker symbol. Do not send an unverified token to an address simply because the address format looks correct.
- Fee spike: wait for more favorable conditions or use the wallet’s documented fee settings if you understand the effect on confirmation time. Never alter a fee by changing the destination address or network.
Step 6: audit the destination before retiring the old wallet
- Reconcile the destination wallet with your original inventory. Check every native coin, token, collectible, account and network.
- Confirm that staking withdrawals, delegated balances, contract positions and claimable assets were handled separately where necessary.
- Review transaction IDs on the relevant block explorers or in the wallet’s transaction history, using the correct network.
- Keep the old wallet available until all expected balances and positions are confirmed and you have preserved any records needed for tax or accounting purposes.
- Only after the audit is complete should you reset, uninstall or retire the old wallet. Phantom’s instructions similarly advise confirming that the old wallet is empty before resetting the application: Phantom’s new-wallet transfer guide.
Resetting an application does not erase a blockchain transaction, and deleting the old wallet interface does not prove that every position moved. The recovery phrase for the old wallet should be destroyed or retained according to your security and record-keeping plan; do not discard it while any asset or contract position still depends on it.
Common failure modes and safe responses
The destination shows no balance after sending
Check the transaction ID on the correct network, its confirmation status, and whether you opened the destination account for the same asset and network. A token may require adding its verified contract or mint to the wallet interface before it becomes visible. Do not send another transaction until you know whether the first one confirmed.

The address changed between receiving attempts
Some wallets generate multiple valid addresses or accounts. Use the address displayed for the specific destination account you intend to fund, and verify it on the hardware device each time. An address change is not automatically a problem, but sending to an address you did not verify is unsafe.
The transaction is pending for an unusually long time
Use the network’s official explorer or the wallet’s transaction details to distinguish pending, dropped and confirmed states. Do not assume that resubmitting is harmless; replacement behavior differs by network. Contact the wallet’s official support only through its published help channel, and never disclose recovery words or private keys.
A website asks for the recovery phrase to complete the transfer
Close it. A normal hardware-wallet send should be authorized on the device, not by typing the recovery backup into a website. Treat requests for a phrase, private key or remote-control session as a likely theft attempt.
An asset or position is not supported by the new wallet
Leave that item in the old wallet while you identify a compatible destination or a documented withdrawal path. Do not mark the migration complete merely because the largest balance arrived. Support and exact menu steps vary by device, application and network, so consult the current official instructions for that combination.

A practical safety checklist
- Decide explicitly: restore the trusted old wallet, or migrate to fresh keys.
- Initialize the destination as new when rotating keys.
- Write and verify the new recovery words offline; never share or type them into a site.
- Inventory all accounts, assets, networks, collectibles, staking and contract positions.
- Confirm destination support for each item before sending.
- Generate the receive address for the exact asset and network.
- Verify the complete address on the hardware wallet’s own screen.
- Send a small test amount and wait for confirmation.
- Recheck address, network, asset, amount and fee before every larger transaction.
- Maintain enough native currency for fees.
- Record transaction IDs and reconcile the destination against the inventory.
- Retire or reset the old wallet only after every intended balance and position is accounted for.
When a fresh migration is worth the extra work
A fresh wallet is most useful when the old recovery phrase is no longer trusted, has been exposed, was created in a potentially compromised environment, or you want a clean separation between old and new activity. The price of that security change is operational: each supported asset must be transferred, fees must be paid, and positions that cannot be sent directly need separate handling.
Restoration is appropriate when the phrase remains confidential and the objective is continuity after a device failure or replacement. It is faster because the addresses remain the same, but it does not remediate a compromised phrase. Choosing between the two is therefore a trust decision first and a hardware decision second.
What this process cannot guarantee
A hardware wallet protects private-key use; it cannot correct a wrong address, wrong network, fraudulent token contract or malicious transaction that you approve. It also cannot automatically migrate assets held by an exchange, smart contract, staking service or separate wallet. Exact supported networks, confirmation rules, fee amounts and interface labels change over time, so verify those details in the current official documentation for your device and asset before signing.
