How to Safely Install Packages Used by AI Coding Agents

Never install a package solely because an AI coding agent suggested it. Verify the package’s identity and registry, inspect its scripts and full dependency tree, preserve a reviewed lockfile or hash-pinned requirement, run the installation with only necessary privileges, and review the resulting code and configuration changes.

This matters because an agent can hallucinate a package name, select a malicious look-alike, or execute a package-manager command using your shell access and credentials. The safe workflow treats the agent’s proposal as an untrusted change request—not as proof that the package exists, is the intended project, or is safe.

Why an AI package suggestion needs human verification

AI coding systems can produce plausible but nonexistent package names. OWASP describes the resulting risk as slopsquatting: an attacker registers a name that a model has invented or is likely to suggest, then publishes a malicious package under it. Typosquatting is the more familiar version, in which a name closely resembling a legitimate project is registered to catch spelling errors.

Even a real package can be the wrong project. Several projects may have similar names, a package can change ownership, or a public package can be selected when your organization intended an internal one. Download counts and popularity are useful context, but they do not establish identity, maintenance quality, or safety.

An agent also has operational reach that autocomplete does not. OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance notes that coding agents may run shell commands, edit files, call APIs, and use connected tools with the developer’s privileges and credentials. Approving npm install, pip install, or an equivalent command can therefore authorize code execution and changes outside the editor.

OWASP’s practical mitigation is direct: verify that every dependency exists, is the correct package rather than a typosquat, and has a reasonable publication history before installing it. Apply that check even when the suggestion appears in an otherwise correct solution.

A safe installation workflow at a glance

Stage What to establish Evidence to keep
1. Pause The exact package name, version, registry, and command the agent wants to run Agent transcript or proposed diff
2. Verify identity The registry entry is the intended project and has credible ownership, documentation, releases, and maintenance Registry and project links, release history, maintainer information
3. Inspect behavior Lifecycle scripts and package contents are expected; no unnecessary install-time actions or dependencies appear Manifest, script list, resolved dependency tree
4. Pin and authenticate The source and exact resolution can be reproduced and checked for integrity Lockfile or hash-pinned requirements file
5. Install narrowly The command runs in an isolated, least-privilege environment with only required network and credential access Command log and environment details
6. Review and monitor The manifest, lockfile, generated files, and vulnerability status are acceptable Code-review record, inventory or SBOM, follow-up alerts

1. Pause before accepting the generated command

Copy the proposed command into a review note instead of immediately approving it. Record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the exact package spelling, scope or namespace, and requested version;
  • the package manager and registry that will resolve it;
  • whether the command adds a production, development, optional, or global dependency;
  • the working directory and files the command may modify; and
  • whether the agent is also proposing scripts, configuration edits, or credential use.

Ask what problem the dependency solves and whether the project already has a standard-library or existing-dependency alternative. A smaller dependency footprint reduces the number of components that must be trusted and maintained.

Do not let urgency bypass this pause. A package suggested during debugging is still a supply-chain change, and a command generated in a terminal has the same consequences whether or not a human typed every character.

2. Verify the package’s identity and source

Check the exact registry record

Search the intended registry for the exact spelling and namespace. Confirm that the entry exists, that its description and documentation match the feature you need, and that its repository and homepage point to the project you recognize. Check the publisher or organization, release history, security contact, and recent maintenance activity.

Compare the registry metadata with the project’s official documentation. A matching name alone is not enough: verify that the documented installation command, import name, package scope, and supported runtime correspond to the project you are modifying.

Use popularity only as context

Download counts, stars, and community activity can help identify anomalies, but none proves that a package is safe. ENISA recommends considering community engagement and documentation together with project maintenance and security information. A heavily downloaded package can still be compromised, abandoned, or unsuitable for your use.

Look for signs of a look-alike

  • One-character spelling differences, unexpected punctuation, or an unrecognized scope.
  • A newly published package whose name matches a model-generated suggestion but has little history.
  • Documentation copied from another project, broken links, or a repository that does not mention the published package.
  • Maintainers, release cadence, or ownership that do not match the project’s official channels.
  • A package selected from a different registry than the one your project normally trusts.

For private and public packages, verify where the name is resolved. Google Cloud identifies dependency confusion as a risk when internal and public dependencies share names. A public package with an internal-looking name must not silently win resolution.

3. Inspect what installation will execute

Review lifecycle and install scripts

Many package ecosystems support scripts that run before or after installation. Inspect the package manifest and registry metadata for preinstall, install, postinstall, and equivalent hooks. Determine whether each script compiles native code, downloads an external binary, changes configuration, contacts a service, or performs an action unrelated to the package’s stated purpose.

ENISA recommends inspecting and restricting installation scripts to reduce attack surface. Restricting or disabling them is a control to consider in a hardened or isolated environment, not a universal fix: some legitimate packages rely on these scripts and may lose functionality when they are blocked. Test the package in a disposable environment before deciding whether a restriction is acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the full dependency tree

A direct dependency can bring several layers of transitive packages. Review the resolved tree, not only the package named in the agent’s command. Look for unexpected networking, shell, credential, native-code, or build components; duplicate versions; abandoned packages; and dependencies that are not required for the feature you are implementing.

Keep only the dependency edges the project needs. If the package offers optional integrations, install the smallest supported feature set. Removing an unnecessary direct dependency can also remove many indirect packages.

Understand build-time versus run-time behavior

Separate packages needed to build or test from those shipped in production. A development tool may require broad file or process access in CI, while the production application may not need it at all. Record this distinction in the manifest and review whether a build script is being executed on developer machines, in CI, or in a deployment image.

4. Control the registry and prevent dependency confusion

Use the registry or proxy approved for the project, and make the source explicit in configuration. Do not rely on a package manager silently choosing between public and private endpoints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Separate installation steps when private and public packages use overlapping names.
  • Configure an internal repository or proxy to prioritize approved internal artifacts.
  • Verify package hashes or signatures where your ecosystem and repository provide them.
  • Review registry configuration files in the proposed change; an agent can alter them as easily as it alters source code.
  • Do not add a new registry merely to make an unavailable package resolve.

Google Cloud’s guidance treats source selection as part of dependency security, not as a one-time setup detail. A lockfile that records the wrong artifact or an internal name that resolves publicly can make a repeatable installation repeat the wrong decision.

5. Pin the resolution and verify integrity

Use a reviewed lockfile

Commit the lockfile or equivalent pinned record appropriate to the ecosystem. Google Cloud explains that npm and Yarn lockfiles record specific downloaded versions for subsequent installations. Review lockfile changes together with the manifest; a one-line direct dependency can add a large transitive change.

For repeatable installs, use the package manager’s lockfile-enforcing mode in CI and deployment rather than resolving fresh versions each time. Re-resolve intentionally, review the resulting diff, and record why the update is needed.

Use hash checking for Python requirements when appropriate

PyPA’s pip documentation, version 26.2.1 when consulted, documents hash-checking mode. A requirements file used with --require-hashes must pin every dependency and include a hash for every required distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
python -m pip install --require-hashes -r requirements.txt

Example requirement entries belong in the reviewed file, with a pinned version and trusted hash for each allowed artifact. A hash supplied only by a remote index is not the local trust decision required for hash-checking mode: obtain and review the hashes through a controlled process, then keep the file under version control.

Do not confuse reproducibility with safety

A lockfile or hash proves that you repeatedly install the same selected artifact; it does not prove that the original selection was the intended or benign project. Identity verification, script inspection, source controls, and code review remain necessary before pinning.

6. Install with least privilege

Run the first installation in a disposable branch, container, virtual environment, or other isolated workspace. Use an account that cannot modify production systems, read unrelated secrets, or publish artifacts. Remove unnecessary cloud credentials, SSH keys, package-publishing tokens, and API access from the environment.

Limit network access to the registries and services the package genuinely needs. If the agent is connected to tools through an IDE, MCP server, or automation layer, grant only the tools required for the task. OWASP’s warning about agent privileges applies even when the package command looks routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before execution, read the final command character by character. Check flags that permit global installation, scripts, arbitrary registries, shell evaluation, or configuration replacement. If the command combines installation with unrelated file edits, split it into separately reviewable actions.

After installation, inspect the process and file changes. Unexpected outbound connections, new executables, credential reads, modified shell profiles, or changes outside the project are stop conditions. Preserve logs and revert the environment rather than attempting to clean an uncertain installation in place.

7. Review the resulting change as code

Review manifests and lockfiles together

Check the direct dependency declaration, version constraint, registry source, and lockfile diff. Confirm that transitive additions are expected and that no package manager configuration was changed to bypass the approved source.

Review generated and configuration files

Inspect build scripts, CI workflows, environment files, generated code, native binaries, and documentation changes. An agent may add a dependency and also alter a startup script or pipeline so that the new code runs with more privileges than intended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate the feature independently

Run the project’s tests and security checks in the isolated environment. Confirm that the package is actually used for the stated requirement, that failure handling is appropriate, and that it does not silently transmit sensitive data. Do not treat a passing test suite as evidence that the package itself is trustworthy; tests establish application behavior, not publisher identity.

GitHub documents dependency review in pull requests. Use that review to see added and changed dependencies before merging, while remembering that a vulnerability severity score alone cannot determine impact in your particular application.

8. Keep an inventory and monitor after installation

Installation is the beginning of dependency management, not the end. Maintain a dependency inventory and, where appropriate, an SBOM that includes direct and transitive components. ENISA recommends SBOM creation and vulnerability checks in CI/CD.

  • Scan the resolved dependency set for known vulnerabilities on every relevant build.
  • Review alerts in the context of how your application uses the affected component, rather than applying severity blindly.
  • Watch for ownership, publication, and maintainer changes in critical packages.
  • Review every automated update as a code and lockfile change.
  • Remove unused dependencies and retire packages that no longer receive credible maintenance.

GitHub documents dependency inventories, vulnerability alerts, pull-request dependency review, and update pull requests through Dependabot. These features improve visibility and workflow discipline; they do not guarantee that a package is safe or that every vulnerability will be detected.

Package-manager checklists

For npm and other JavaScript projects

  1. Confirm the exact package name, scope, registry, and version before accepting the agent’s command.
  2. Inspect the package manifest for lifecycle scripts and review the complete resolved dependency tree.
  3. Review the manifest and lockfile diff, including every newly introduced transitive package.
  4. Use the project’s lockfile-enforcing installation mode in CI or deployment after the resolution is approved.
  5. Check registry configuration for accidental public fallback when private packages are present.
  6. Run tests and security checks in an environment without production credentials.

For Python projects

  1. Verify the distribution name, project links, supported Python versions, and publication history.
  2. Use a virtual environment and keep development-only packages separate from production requirements.
  3. Pin requirements and, when the project’s workflow supports it, use python -m pip install --require-hashes -r requirements.txt.
  4. Ensure every dependency in hash-checking mode has a reviewed hash; a remotely supplied index hash is not a substitute for local trust.
  5. Review the resolved dependency set and generated files before the change leaves the isolated environment.
  6. Record the final dependency inventory and scan it continuously.

What to do when something looks wrong

The package does not exist

Stop. Do not register the name yourself or substitute a similarly named package without repeating identity and source verification. Ask the agent to explain the requirement, then look for an established project or an implementation using dependencies already approved by the team.

The package exists but has suspicious maintenance or scripts

Do not install it in a credentialed environment. Save the metadata and script findings, seek a maintainer or security review, and evaluate an alternative. Script restrictions can be tested in isolation, but blocking them may break legitimate functionality.

The lockfile changes far more than expected

Reject the change provisionally and inspect the dependency tree. Identify which direct package introduced each unexpected branch, remove optional features that are not needed, and re-resolve only after the scope is understood.

A private name resolves to a public package

Stop the installation, correct registry or proxy precedence, and separate private and public resolution where necessary. Verify the intended internal artifact by hash or signature before retrying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The install changed files outside the project

Terminate the isolated environment, revoke any credentials it could access, preserve logs, and investigate from a clean workspace. Do not trust a cleanup performed by the same agent or package before determining what ran.

Choose controls that fit the workflow

Control approach Best fit Security benefit Operational cost or limitation
Manual identity and script review Individual development and first evaluation Catches hallucinated names, look-alikes, unexpected publishers, and install behavior before execution Requires time and informed judgment; popularity cannot replace the review
Lockfile-enforced installation Teams, CI, and deployment Repeats an approved dependency resolution and exposes unexpected diffs Requires deliberate update reviews and does not validate the original selection
Hash-pinned requirements Python workflows needing strong artifact repeatability Rejects distributions that do not match every approved hash Every dependency must be pinned and hashed; hash preparation and updates add maintenance
Script restriction or isolation Higher-security builds and untrusted first installs Reduces install-time execution and limits damage from a malicious hook Some packages depend on scripts, so functionality may break and require testing
Dependency review, inventory, and CI scanning Shared repositories and long-lived products Provides change visibility, known-vulnerability monitoring, and ownership of transitive risk Alerts need application-context triage; scanners cannot guarantee safety

A concise approval rule

Approve an AI-proposed package only when you can answer all of these questions:

  • Is this the exact project and registry entry we intend to use?
  • Is its maintenance, ownership, documentation, and publication history credible?
  • What will its install scripts and transitive dependencies execute or access?
  • Can the approved artifact and dependency resolution be reproduced and integrity-checked?
  • Will the installation run with no more privileges, credentials, or network access than necessary?
  • Have the manifest, lockfile, generated files, and ongoing monitoring been reviewed?

If any answer is unknown, defer installation and resolve that uncertainty first. The safest response to an agent’s package suggestion is not an automatic yes or no; it is a controlled verification process that makes the package, source, behavior, and long-term ownership visible.
