How to Safely Install Arch User Repository Packages and Review PKGBUILDs

Short answer: treat every AUR package as untrusted build code until you have read its PKGBUILD, referenced files, sources, checksums, signatures and install hooks. Build it as a normal user with makepkg --syncdeps, inspect the resulting package, then install the local artifact with makepkg --install or pacman -U. Repeat the review for every update.

What makes an AUR package different

The Arch User Repository is a collection of community-maintained PKGBUILDs, separate from Arch Linux’s official package repositories. An AUR entry is therefore not an Arch-built binary that has passed the official repository’s build and signing chain. It is a recipe and a set of instructions that you execute locally.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A PKGBUILD is Bash-interpreted build code. It can assign variables, run arbitrary shell commands, download additional files, modify the build environment and install files into the package. The normal tools do not make that code harmless: makepkg reads the file, obtains and validates sources, runs its build functions and creates a local .pkg.tar.zst package. pacman can then install that local artifact and resolve its dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters for trust. A signature on an official repository package and a package you built from an AUR recipe answer different questions. The default local-file policy does not turn a user-built artifact into an official signed package. You are trusting the PKGBUILD, every file it references, the upstream sources and the checks you performed.

The safe workflow at a glance

  1. Prefer an official repository package or a directly documented upstream binary when one meets your needs.
  2. Open the AUR page and establish the package’s provenance before downloading anything.
  3. Read the complete PKGBUILD and every referenced helper, patch and .install file.
  4. Verify source URLs, checksums, detached signatures and validpgpkeys where available.
  5. Check metadata and dependency intent for surprises.
  6. Build in a dedicated directory as an unprivileged user.
  7. Install only the local artifact you inspected, then examine its file list and hooks.
  8. On every update, review the complete diff before rebuilding.

Arch Linux’s homepage notice dated June 12, 2026, reports a high volume of malicious package adoptions and updates in the AUR and explicitly encourages users to review all PKGBUILD and install-script changes when updating. That warning makes update review part of the normal process, not an optional precaution.

Before downloading: establish provenance

Start with the AUR entry

Check the package name, current version and release number against the project’s own documentation. Confirm that the source domain in the PKGBUILD is the domain used by the upstream project, rather than an unrelated mirror or a newly added download host. A package that changed hands, was recently adopted or has a sudden maintainer change deserves a fresh, full review even if you have used it before.

  • Review the maintainer and co-maintainer history.
  • Read recent comments for build failures, source changes and reports of unexpected behavior.
  • Check whether the package is flagged out of date or has other status warnings.
  • Look at the linked source repository and its recent activity.
  • Compare the project name, version and release channel with upstream documentation.

Popularity, votes and an old submission date are not security guarantees. A popular package can be compromised in a later update, and a new package can be legitimate but require more scrutiny because there is less history.

Choose deliberately when several AUR packages exist

When two recipes provide the same software, compare the properties that affect your ability to trust and reproduce the build.

Comparison point Questions to ask
Upstream provenance Does the recipe obtain code from the project’s documented release or repository, and does the domain make sense?
Maintainer continuity Is there a clear maintenance history and useful review discussion, or was the package recently adopted?
Release versus VCS Does it build a fixed release, or does a VCS recipe fetch changing development code?
Integrity controls Are checksums present and maintained? Are detached signatures supplied and constrained with trusted fingerprints?
Build complexity How many patches, helper functions, downloads and install hooks must you audit?
Dependency footprint Are dependencies expected for the upstream project, or do they add unrelated interpreters, network clients or privileged services?
Reproducibility Can another user rebuild the same package from the displayed sources and instructions?
Alternatives Is there an official repository package or an upstream binary that avoids a community build recipe?

How to read a PKGBUILD safely

Read the file as code, not as a metadata form. The PKGBUILD manual for Pacman 7.1.0 (dated May 6, 2026) identifies pkgname, pkgver, pkgrel and arch as the mandatory fields for a minimally functional PKGBUILD. A minimally functional file can still be unsafe, so mandatory fields are only a starting point.

Inspect variables and metadata

Read every assignment, including arrays and quoted values. Confirm these fields match the software you intend to install:

  • pkgname, pkgver, pkgrel and arch.
  • license and the stated upstream project information.
  • depends, makedepends, checkdepends and optdepends.
  • conflicts, provides and replaces.

Dependencies should have an understandable relationship to the upstream software and its build system. Investigate an unexpected shell, network utility, service, credential tool or privileged component instead of accepting it automatically. For split packages, check the global dependency declarations as well as each individual package function: makepkg checks global requirements before it processes the separate outputs.

Read every build function

Inspect all functions that are present. The usual build surfaces are:

  • prepare() may apply patches, rewrite files or alter build configuration.
  • build() compiles or packages the software and can execute arbitrary commands.
  • check() runs tests, but its presence does not prove that the rest of the recipe is safe.
  • package() copies files into the package directory and can create services, hooks or permissions.
  • Split-package functions can produce several packages from one source tree and may contain different installation logic.

Search the file and its helpers for commands that download content not declared in source=(), pipe remote content directly to a shell, write outside $srcdir or $pkgdir, alter users or services, access credentials, or invoke sudo. A command can be legitimate in context, but it must have an explanation you can verify.

Do not overlook the install file

If the PKGBUILD sets an install=... file, read that file before building. Pacman can execute package-specific pre-install, post-install, upgrade and removal hooks from it. These hooks can enable services, create users, migrate configuration or perform cleanup after installation, so reviewing only the main PKGBUILD leaves a significant executable surface unread.

Verify sources, checksums and signatures

Check every source declaration

Read each entry in source=(), including renamed sources and VCS fragments. Make sure the URL, filename and version correspond to the upstream release you expect. Look for downloads that are not obvious from the package description, such as a second archive fetched by a helper function.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand checksum arrays

Match sha256sums or another integrity array to values published by upstream whenever possible. The order of checksum values must correspond to the order of the source entries. A checksum confirms that the downloaded bytes match the expected digest; it does not by itself prove that the upstream account or hosting service was uncompromised.

SKIP is an explicit loss of checksum verification for that source. Treat it as a decision requiring justification, especially for a release archive. Version-control sources may use a different integrity model because the fetched revision can change, but that does not make the source automatically trustworthy.

The Arch manual cautions that values generated with makepkg -g should be checked against developer-provided values. Generating a digest from whatever you downloaded and immediately placing it in the PKGBUILD only proves that your local file hashes to your newly generated value; it does not establish that the file is authentic.

Validate detached signatures

A source ending in .sig, .sign or .asc is treated by makepkg as a PGP signature. When signatures are provided, identify the signer and compare the fingerprint with the upstream project’s published key information. The validpgpkeys array restricts the fingerprints that makepkg will accept; read it rather than assuming that any key in your keyring is appropriate.

A missing signature is not proof of maliciousness, but it removes one useful authenticity check. A signature from an unknown key, a key that changed without explanation or a fingerprint that is not constrained should stop the process until you can resolve the discrepancy.

Prepare a controlled, non-root build

Use a dedicated working directory and a normal user account. Do not run makepkg as root. Arch documents that PKGBUILDs can contain arbitrary commands and that root builds are unsafe; makepkg refuses to run as root for this reason. Building unprivileged limits the damage a malicious or broken recipe can do during its build phase.

Keep the working directory, build logs and resulting package until you understand the installation and have confirmed that the software works. Do not copy a PKGBUILD into a system directory or make it writable by unrelated users.

  1. Create or enter a private build directory owned by your normal account.
  2. Obtain the PKGBUILD and associated files from the AUR entry using the project’s documented method.
  3. Read the files before executing any build command. If the package is an update, compare the new files with the previously reviewed versions.
  4. Run the dependency-resolving build command only after the review is complete:
makepkg --syncdeps

--syncdeps asks the package manager to install missing dependencies needed for the build. Review the dependency transaction before accepting it, particularly when the recipe introduces an unexpected package or service. Build failures should be investigated in the recipe and upstream sources; do not reflexively bypass failed checks or remove integrity validation.

Inspect the build result before installation

A successful build means that the instructions ran to completion, not that the software is safe or appropriate. Review the generated .pkg.tar.zst and the build output before putting it on the system.

  • Confirm the package name, version, architecture and dependency metadata.
  • Read the package file list and look for unexpected paths.
  • Pay special attention to files under /etc, systemd unit directories and package-manager hook directories.
  • Look for setuid or setgid binaries and ask whether the upstream project needs those privileges.
  • Recheck any .INSTALL behavior and service-enabling actions.
  • Keep logs so you can explain what was downloaded, built and installed.

Unexpected system-wide configuration, a new daemon, a privileged executable or a credential-related file is a reason to stop and investigate, even if the package compiled successfully.

Install only the local artifact you reviewed

After inspection, install the package from the working directory. You can ask makepkg to install the artifact it just built:

makepkg --install

Alternatively, install a specific local package file with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
pacman -U package.pkg.tar.zst

The local-file installation path lets pacman manage dependencies and future removal, but it does not change the origin of the package. It remains an artifact built from a community PKGBUILD, not an official repository binary. Read the transaction summary and verify the package filename before confirming.

What pacman does—and does not—verify

pacman verifies packages according to the repository or local-file trust configuration you are using. That verification should not be confused with an audit of the AUR recipe. Pacman does not decide whether a PKGBUILD’s shell commands are sensible, whether a source URL is the project’s legitimate host, or whether an install hook is appropriate.

The AUR workflow has two separate validation stages:

Stage What is being checked What it cannot establish
PKGBUILD and source review Recipe logic, source locations, checksums, signatures, keys, dependencies and hooks. That every upstream system involved was uncompromised or that the software itself has no vulnerabilities.
Local package installation Package metadata, dependency handling and any configured local-file signature policy. That a user-built artifact has the official repository’s build and signing provenance.

Think of makepkg as the tool that executes and packages the recipe, and pacman as the tool that installs and manages the resulting package. Neither division removes your responsibility to read the code you chose to execute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review updates as a new package

Never assume that a previously reviewed AUR package remains unchanged. Before each update, fetch the new PKGBUILD and inspect the complete diff. Include changes to:

  • Source URLs, renamed files and VCS revisions.
  • Checksums, detached signatures and validpgpkeys.
  • Dependencies, conflicts, provides and replacement rules.
  • prepare(), build(), check() and package() functions.
  • Split-package functions and any new helper files.
  • The .install file and service or hook behavior.

A small-looking version bump can conceal a new download host, changed key, command substitution or install action. If the maintainer changed, the package was adopted or the source moved, perform a full review rather than limiting yourself to the visible version number.

Warning signs and how to respond

The recipe downloads extra code during the build

Find the command that performs the download and determine why it is not represented in source=(). Verify the destination, expected version and integrity mechanism. If you cannot account for the bytes that will be executed or packaged, do not build.

A checksum is replaced with SKIP

Identify the source and ask whether there is a reproducible reason. Request or locate an upstream checksum when possible. Do not treat SKIP as a harmless placeholder: it means that source will not receive checksum verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The package asks for sudo or modifies users and services

Determine whether the action belongs in the package’s documented installation design. A recipe that needs administrative changes during an unprivileged build is especially concerning. Stop and inspect the install hooks and package file list instead of granting elevated access.

The build fails an integrity or signature check

Do not disable the check just to finish. Compare the downloaded file with the upstream release, verify that the PKGBUILD is current and investigate key or URL changes. A failed check can indicate a legitimate upstream change, a stale recipe or tampering; the error itself does not tell you which.

The package adds an unexpected daemon or privileged file

Pause before installation. Confirm the feature in upstream documentation, inspect the relevant function and review the final file list. If the behavior is not necessary for the software you intended to install, discard the build and find an alternative package or source.

A practical decision checklist

  • Provenance: Does the AUR entry, upstream project and source domain agree?
  • History: Have you checked maintainer changes, comments and flagged status?
  • Code: Have you read every function, helper, patch and .install file?
  • Sources: Have you accounted for every download, including renamed and VCS sources?
  • Integrity: Are checksums valid, and have you understood every SKIP?
  • Signatures: Are detached signatures present where expected, with fingerprints constrained by validpgpkeys?
  • Dependencies: Do build-time and run-time dependencies make sense?
  • Build context: Are you using a dedicated directory and a normal user?
  • Artifact: Have you inspected metadata, file paths, permissions, services and hooks?
  • Updates: Have you reviewed the complete diff since the last installation?

If any answer is no, the safe choice is to stop, gather the missing information and review again. The time saved by skipping a check is rarely worth installing code you cannot explain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

An AUR package is a community build recipe, not an official Arch binary. Read the PKGBUILD and all referenced files as executable Bash, verify sources and integrity controls, build without root, inspect the local package, and review every update diff. Use makepkg --syncdeps to build after the review, then install the inspected artifact with makepkg --install or pacman -U. That workflow does not make third-party code risk-free, but it keeps the important trust decisions visible and under your control.
