How to Safely Handle User-Uploaded SVG Files in Next.js

Treat every uploaded SVG as active, untrusted markup—not as a harmless image. A safe Next.js design validates the bytes and parsed structure on the server, sanitizes with an SVG-aware allow-list, stores files under generated names on an isolated origin, serves them as downloads by default, and uses a restrictive CSP plus a narrow rendering sink when previews are required.

If users only need a logo or thumbnail, rasterizing the upload to PNG or WebP and discarding the SVG is the simplest browser-side risk reduction. Keep SVG only when its vector quality or semantics are genuinely needed.

Why an uploaded SVG is different from an uploaded bitmap

SVG is XML-based markup with capabilities that overlap HTML and CSS. It can contain elements, styles, links, references and scripting-related features. A file named logo.svg can therefore be a delivery mechanism for active content if an application places it in a browser context without controlling what the document contains and how it is served.

Next.js documentation describes the issue directly: “SVG has many of the same features as HTML/CSS, which can lead to vulnerabilities without proper Content Security Policy (CSP) headers.” The framework disables SVG optimization by default for this reason. Enabling SVG handling is an explicit security decision, not a cosmetic image setting.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

The practical consequence is that file extensions and browser-declared MIME types are not security boundaries. A safe implementation has several independent controls:

  • Authenticate and authorize the upload request before reading its body.
  • Limit the request size and reject empty, malformed or unsupported documents.
  • Parse and validate the document root, namespace and allowed feature set.
  • Sanitize with an SVG-aware policy before persistence or rendering.
  • Store under a generated object key, outside executable application directories.
  • Prefer download responses and an origin that cannot read application cookies.
  • Use a restrictive CSP and a passive browser sink such as <img> for any preview.

These controls address different failure modes. A sanitizer cannot compensate for an unsafe serving origin, and a CSP cannot make an untrusted document valid for every possible browser sink.

Choose the least powerful representation that meets the feature

Start with the product contract rather than the upload widget. Decide whether users need an editable vector document, an inline preview, animation, accessibility metadata or only a static picture. Every additional SVG feature increases the policy and testing burden.

Download-only SVG

For files that users retrieve for use elsewhere, return an attachment rather than opening the document in the browser. This gives the broadest compatibility and the lowest browser execution risk. The trade-off is that users do not get an in-app preview.

Sanitized inline SVG

This preserves vector quality and allows a preview, but requires a maintained sanitizer, a narrowly defined allow-list, strict control over the rendering sink, a CSP and recurring dependency review. Inline preview should be an explicit requirement, not the default.

Rasterized output

Rendering the accepted SVG to PNG or WebP on the server removes SVG markup from the browser delivery path. It simplifies serving and caching, but loses vector fidelity, animation and some accessibility semantics. Keep the original only if a separate, controlled workflow truly needs it.

Option Feature fidelity Browser attack surface Operational work Best fit
Download-only SVG Original vector file Lowest of the three when attachment headers are enforced Low; still validate and sanitize if the file may later be rendered Archives, exports and user downloads
Sanitized inline SVG Vector preview and selected SVG semantics Higher; depends on sanitizer, CSP and sink controls High; policy, dependency and browser testing are ongoing Trusted product features that require an inline preview
Rasterized PNG/WebP Static visual appearance only SVG markup is removed from the browser path Medium; adds server-side conversion and storage Avatars, thumbnails and decorative graphics

Build the upload boundary in a Next.js server route

Receive the body in a Route Handler or another server-side endpoint. Do not rely on a client component to enforce limits or clean content; an attacker can call the endpoint directly. Apply the user’s authentication and authorization checks before accepting the body, and make the upload policy explicit for each route.

1. Enforce a small byte limit

Set a maximum request size appropriate to the feature and reject the request before expensive parsing or conversion. Check the actual bytes received, not only a Content-Length header, because that header can be absent or inaccurate. Reject an empty body and stop processing as soon as the limit is exceeded.

2. Generate the storage key

Never use the supplied filename as a path or object key. Generate a random server-side identifier, retain the original name only as display metadata, and normalize that metadata for logs and downloads. Keep uploaded objects outside directories that execute application code, and prevent user-controlled paths from reaching filesystem APIs.

3. Parse the content, not just the label

Check that the parsed document has the expected root element and SVG namespace. A filename ending in .svg and a browser declaration of image/svg+xml are useful hints, not proof. Reject documents that are empty, truncated, malformed or not actually SVG.

Your parser and policy should explicitly address XML constructs and features that the product does not need. Common examples to reject include document type declarations, entity definitions, processing instructions, script elements, event-handler attributes and external references. Also decide whether to reject foreignObject, animation, filters, style blocks, embedded fonts and any network-fetching reference. If a feature is not required, excluding it makes both review and testing clearer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Keep the allow-list reviewable

Write down the permitted elements, attributes, namespaces, URL schemes and style properties. A policy that says “allow SVG” is not specific enough to audit. Revisit the list when the sanitizer, parser, Next.js or browser support changes. Version-sensitive image behavior and sanitizer defaults should be checked again after upgrades.

Sanitize with an SVG-aware policy

Use a sanitizer designed for the formats you accept. Cure53 describes DOMPurify as “a fast, standards-aware XSS sanitizer for HTML, MathML and SVG.” On the server, configure the runtime and parser deliberately, then sanitize before storing a representation that might ever be rendered.

A minimal DOMPurify SVG profile

DOMPurify supports SVG profiles. A typical call is:

The profile is not a substitute for your feature contract. If filters, styles or animation are unnecessary, remove them from the policy rather than enabling them for convenience. Keep the library’s default URI, namespace and DOM-clobbering protections unless you have a documented reason to change them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sanitize for the exact sink

Cure53’s threat model gives the essential rule: “Sanitize for the exact sink you use, and keep HTML in HTML, SVG in SVG.” Sanitized output is context-specific. Do not take a string sanitized for an SVG document, insert it into an HTML template, or pass it through a second XML, HTML or templating transformation that can reintroduce interpretation differences.

Persist the sanitized representation that your application intends to serve, or keep the original in a quarantined store that is never exposed directly. Do not modify the sanitized string afterward by concatenating markup, injecting user labels, changing namespaces or applying ad hoc regular expressions. If you need a different representation, parse and sanitize again for that new context.

Serve uploads defensively

Use a separate upload origin

Serve user objects from an origin that cannot read application cookies. A separate hostname is stronger when it is configured without the application’s session-cookie scope; a separate storage bucket or CDN path can support the same separation. Check redirects, custom error pages and cache behavior so that an upload response cannot unexpectedly become an application-origin response.

Force downloads unless preview is required

Next.js specifically recommends setting contentDispositionType to force the browser to download an SVG and setting contentSecurityPolicy to prevent embedded scripts from executing. For a download response, use headers equivalent to:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="download.svg"
Content-Type: image/svg+xml
X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; script-src 'none'; sandbox;

Return Content-Type: image/svg+xml only when the client needs an SVG response. Otherwise, attachment disposition is the safer default. nosniff prevents MIME-type guessing but does not sanitize the file or replace CSP.

Understand the CSP boundary

The policy default-src 'self'; script-src 'none'; sandbox; is the documented defensive pattern for SVG responses. It blocks script execution and applies a sandbox to the document. Review whether your application needs any additional capabilities; do not broaden the policy merely to make a problematic file render. CSP is defense in depth, not permission to skip validation and sanitization.

Render previews through a narrow browser sink

Prefer an <img> element for a passive preview of a sanitized file. Avoid direct navigation to the SVG URL, <object>, <embed>, inline HTML injection and iframe contexts unless that exact context has its own threat model and defenses. Different sinks can give the same bytes different capabilities, so a sanitizer that is acceptable for one sink is not automatically acceptable for another.

Keep the preview URL on the isolated upload origin, use the sanitized object, and ensure that the response still has the intended CSP and disposition headers. Test the real deployed path rather than assuming that a local development response has the same headers, redirects, cache rules or cookie behavior.

Configure Next.js image handling deliberately

SVG support through next/image is opt-in. The relevant settings include:

  • dangerouslyAllowSVG: true, which acknowledges that SVG handling needs explicit review.
  • unoptimized: true when the source is already a known, sanitized SVG and should not be transformed by the optimizer.
  • remotePatterns and, where applicable, local image patterns that constrain which hosts and paths may be loaded.
  • contentDispositionType: 'attachment' and a restrictive contentSecurityPolicy for optimizer responses when downloads are the desired behavior.

An example configuration shape is:

const nextConfig = {
  images: {
    dangerouslyAllowSVG: true,
    unoptimized: true,
    contentDispositionType: 'attachment',
    contentSecurityPolicy: "default-src 'self'; script-src 'none'; sandbox;",
    remotePatterns: [
      { protocol: 'https', hostname: 'uploads.example.test', pathname: '/**' }
    ]
  }
};

export default nextConfig;

Replace the example host with an origin you control and constrain the path as narrowly as your application allows. These options do not validate upload bytes, sanitize markup or secure a separately implemented download route. Treat them as security code and inventory them with the rest of the application’s server entry points.

A complete handling sequence

  1. Define the contract. Decide whether the feature needs download, preview, animation, external references, accessibility metadata or editing. Reject unsupported SVG features, or rasterize when no SVG semantics are needed.
  2. Authorize first. Verify the account, tenant and permission before reading the upload body.
  3. Apply byte and request limits. Reject empty, oversized and obviously invalid requests before parsing.
  4. Parse and validate. Confirm the document root and namespace, reject malformed XML and disallowed constructs, and inspect references and URL schemes.
  5. Sanitize. Use an SVG-aware allow-list, retaining namespace and URI protections. Produce the exact representation needed by the intended sink.
  6. Generate storage metadata. Create a random object key, store the original name only as metadata, and keep the object outside executable paths.
  7. Persist safely. Store the sanitized output for rendering; quarantine any original for a workflow that never exposes it directly.
  8. Serve with headers. Prefer attachment disposition, add nosniff, apply the restrictive CSP at the upload boundary, and keep the origin isolated from application cookies.
  9. Render narrowly. Use <img> for previews and avoid active or context-changing sinks.
  10. Test the deployed route. Exercise upload, download, preview, cache, redirect and error paths, including the headers and cookie behavior users will actually receive.

Failure modes and how to fix them

“The extension is .svg, so it is safe.”

Extensions are user-controlled metadata. Parse the bytes, verify the root and namespace, enforce the feature policy and sanitize before persistence or rendering.

“The browser says image/svg+xml.”

MIME declarations can be forged. Treat them as routing hints only, and set the response type yourself after server-side validation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The sanitizer ran, so any display method is safe.”

Sanitization is sink-specific. Keep the sanitized SVG in an SVG context and use a passive image sink. Do not navigate to it, embed it as an object or inject it as HTML without separately defending that context.

“We sanitized, then added a title with string replacement.”

Post-sanitization edits can invalidate the sanitizer’s assumptions. Build metadata before sanitization or parse and sanitize the final document again for the exact sink.

“CSP alone blocks the problem.”

CSP is valuable defense in depth, but it does not correct malformed content, unsafe references, data exposure, open redirects or an application-origin upload host. Keep validation, sanitization, origin isolation and sink control in place.

“Next Image will secure the file.”

Next.js image settings govern framework image behavior; they do not replace an upload policy. A direct object-storage URL, redirect, error response or custom route may bypass those settings, so test every serving path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing checklist for production

Exercise the upload endpoint directly and test the exact responses delivered through your CDN or storage layer. Include:

  • Event-handler attributes and script elements.
  • foreignObject, style blocks, filters and animation if those features are not required.
  • External URLs, javascript: URLs and data: URLs in every relevant attribute.
  • Malformed or missing namespaces, truncated XML and parser errors.
  • Oversized bodies, empty files and polyglot files that resemble another format.
  • Direct navigation, <img>, iframe, object and embed attempts.
  • Cache hits, redirects, custom 4xx/5xx pages and content-type changes.
  • Presence of Content-Disposition, CSP and X-Content-Type-Options on every intended response.
  • Confirmation that application cookies are not sent to the upload origin.
  • Authorization checks for reading, replacing and deleting another user’s object.

Record the expected result for each case. A blocked upload, a forced download and a rendered preview are different outcomes; the test should verify the one your product contract requires.

Maintenance after launch

SVG security is not a one-time configuration. Next.js image behavior and DOMPurify allow-lists are version-sensitive. Recheck the deployed versions, release notes and your policy after upgrades. Review new SVG features before adding them, rotate or invalidate objects when authorization changes, and keep monitoring focused on upload-route errors, unexpected content types and responses from the upload origin.

When a vulnerability or policy mistake is discovered, disable inline preview first, switch responses to attachment, quarantine existing objects and rebuild sanitized or rasterized derivatives from trusted inputs. This gives the incident response team a containment option without deleting every user asset immediately.
