Keep people and pets away, do not disturb the bees, and leave a safely located cluster alone. A honeybee swarm is usually a temporary gathering while scout bees search for a permanent nest site, but “usually gentle” does not mean risk-free. If the cluster is beside a doorway, play area, public path, or another place people cannot avoid, contact a local beekeeper who collects swarms. If bees are entering a wall, eave, or other cavity, treat the situation as a possible established colony and arrange specialist help instead of trying to seal or spray the opening.
What a honeybee swarm is—and why it is in your yard
A swarm forms when part of a honeybee colony leaves its original nest to establish a new one. The bees gather in a temporary cluster while scout bees search for a suitable permanent site. You may see the cluster hanging from a branch, shrub, fence, play structure, or another exposed object. The cluster can look alarming because hundreds or thousands of bees may be packed together, yet it is not necessarily an established nest.

University extension guidance describes a clustered swarm as often less defensive than bees protecting a nest. That is a reason to remain calm, not an invitation to approach. Bees can still sting when they are provoked, handled, sprayed, struck, or trapped. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises people to keep their distance and avoid disturbing a swarm (guidance on seeing a honeybee swarm).

The most important clues are the bees’ location and behavior. A hanging cluster in the open is consistent with a temporary swarm. Bees repeatedly flying into and out of a hole, wall, eave, chimney, or other cavity may be establishing a colony inside a structure. Those two situations require different responses and different kinds of help.

What to do in the first few minutes
- Move people and pets away calmly. Bring children indoors or to another part of the property. Put dogs, cats, and other animals behind a closed door or in a secure area. Do not send anyone closer for a better look or photograph.
- Create a practical no-go area. Keep everyone away from the cluster and the flight path around it. The sources do not establish one universal safe distance, so use the largest separation that is easy to maintain and avoid any place people must pass.
- Do not touch, shake, poke, swat, hose, or spray the cluster. Do not throw objects at it and do not try to collect it in a box, bag, bucket, or other container. Disturbance can provoke defensive behavior and increase the chance of stings.
- Observe only from a safe location. Note whether the bees are hanging in an exposed cluster or repeatedly entering a structural opening. Do not walk underneath the cluster, climb a ladder, move a branch, or open a wall to investigate.
- Decide whether the area can be avoided. If the swarm is away from routine foot traffic and nobody needs to work near it, leave it undisturbed. If avoiding it is unrealistic or someone could be exposed accidentally, begin arranging professional help.
Jon Zawislak, extension assistant professor of apiculture and urban entomology at the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, puts the core rule plainly: “Leave it alone — don’t throw rocks at it or squirt it with a garden hose or spray it with an insecticide.” The statement appears in the university’s April 16, 2026 guidance (Spotted a honey bee swarm? Stay calm and call a beekeeper).
Should you wait or arrange removal?
The correct choice depends on whether the site can be safely avoided, whether the bees are merely clustered, and whether the location creates unavoidable contact. Use this decision table rather than trying to estimate a departure time.
| What you see | Immediate choice | Reason and next step |
|---|---|---|
| Cluster hanging on a branch or similar object, away from paths, doors, play areas, and work areas | Leave it alone and keep people and pets away | Scouts may relocate the swarm. Monitor only from a safe distance and wait for it to move. |
| Cluster beside a doorway, driveway, playground, schoolyard, public walkway, or another unavoidable route | Keep everyone clear and call a beekeeper who collects swarms | The site creates a real exposure risk. Ask a county extension office or local beekeeping association for a referral if you do not know whom to contact. |
| Bees repeatedly entering a wall, eave, roof void, chimney, or other cavity | Keep away and contact a specialist | This may be an established colony rather than a temporary hanging swarm. Do not plug the opening or spray into it. |
| Bees are actively attacking people or an animal | Get away immediately and take shelter | Go into a house, vehicle, or shed. Do not swat or jump into water. Call 911 if someone is being attacked. |
Clemson Cooperative Extension specifically frames a swarm near a public walkway, doorway, playground, schoolyard, or public park as a problem location requiring safe removal (Frequently Asked Questions About Honey Bee Swarms). A swarm that is safe to avoid does not need to be chased away simply because it is visible.

Will the swarm leave by itself?
Often, a temporary swarm moves when the scouts find a suitable nest site, but no reliable departure clock applies to every swarm. Clemson Extension says a swarm may remain for a few hours, a day, or several days depending on conditions. Treat that as a range of observed possibilities, not a promise that your cluster will be gone by a particular hour or date.
While waiting, maintain the no-go area and keep checking only from a distance. Do not stand nearby to watch the cluster, repeatedly walk under it, or attempt to make it leave. If circumstances change—such as a doorway becoming the only entrance to the house, children needing to cross the area, or bees moving into a cavity—switch from waiting to contacting a professional.
How to tell a temporary swarm from a colony in a structure
| Sign | More consistent with a temporary swarm | More consistent with an established colony |
|---|---|---|
| Where the bees are | A visible mass hanging from a branch, shrub, or other exposed object | Bees disappear through a crack, wall opening, eave, roof void, chimney, or similar cavity |
| Movement | A cluster remains together while scout bees search for a site | Bees repeatedly enter and leave the same opening over time |
| Appropriate help | A beekeeper who collects accessible swarms may be able to retrieve it | A specialist experienced with structural colony removal is needed |
| What not to do | Do not shake, hose, spray, or attempt a do-it-yourself capture | Do not plug the entrance or inject chemicals into the cavity |
The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension discusses both situations in Honey Bee Swarms and Bees in Walls. A cluster can change location, so if you are unsure, describe what you see to an extension office or qualified professional rather than assuming it is harmless or temporary.

Who can remove a swarm safely?
For an accessible cluster in a risky location, look for a local beekeeper who explicitly collects or rescues swarms. Availability, response time, service area, and fees vary by community; no universal price or free-service rule applies.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Contact your county or regional Extension office. Explain that you have a honeybee swarm and ask for a referral to a local swarm collector or an appropriate specialist.
- Contact a local beekeeping association. Many associations maintain member contacts, but confirm directly that the person accepts swarm calls and can handle the exact location.
- Describe the situation before anyone travels. Give the approximate height, the object supporting the cluster, whether people must pass nearby, and whether bees are entering a wall or other cavity. A clear description helps the responder bring suitable equipment and decide whether the job is a swarm collection or structural removal.
- Confirm practical details. Ask whether the provider serves your area, when they can respond, whether collection is possible at that height or location, and whether a fee applies. Do not assume that a volunteer referral guarantees same-day service.
- Keep the site unchanged until help arrives. Continue to keep people and pets away. Do not try to make the job easier by cutting branches, moving objects, opening siding, or spraying the bees.
Local advice matters in regions where Africanized honey bees may be present. University of Georgia guidance says residents in those areas should contact county Extension or the state agriculture department rather than automatically asking an ordinary beekeeper to collect a swarm (Honey bee swarms and bees in walls – Beekeeping Resources). An Extension office can explain which local agency or professional is appropriate.
Why common do-it-yourself fixes are unsafe
- Insecticide or homemade sprays: Spraying can agitate the bees, may create a larger defensive response, and does not solve a colony hidden in a wall. Extension sources specifically warn against insecticide and other sprays.
- Garden hoses or pressure washers: Water can knock bees into a defensive state, scatter the cluster, damage property, and push bees into places that are harder to remove. It is not a safe way to make a swarm leave.
- Swatting, throwing objects, or shaking a branch: Physical disturbance is a direct provocation. It can turn a stationary cluster into flying, defensive bees around the person who disturbed it.
- Attempting a capture without training and equipment: Beekeeping swarm-catching instructions are written for equipped, experienced beekeepers. Following them as a homeowner can expose you, bystanders, and pets to stings.
- Plugging a hole where bees are entering: If a colony is inside, sealing the opening can trap bees in the structure or force them to find another exit. Arrange specialist help instead.
Do not mistake a calm appearance for a guarantee. “Usually gentle” describes a common tendency of a clustered swarm, not a risk-free condition. Keep the same precautions even if the bees appear quiet and no one has been stung.

What to do if the bees start attacking
Active attack changes the priority from identification to escape. Move away quickly and seek an enclosed shelter such as a house, vehicle, or shed. Continue moving toward cover rather than stopping to swat at bees. Do not jump into water; bees can remain around the surface when you come back up.
Do not attempt to rescue a person by walking into the attacking bees without protection. Once everyone is sheltered, call 911 if someone is being attacked, following the bee-safety guidance from University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, San Diego County (Bee Safety).

Protecting children, pets, and visitors
- Tell children in simple terms that the cluster is off-limits and bring them indoors rather than relying on a warning near the bees.
- Keep dogs and other pets inside or in a secure area. Barking, chasing, or pawing at a cluster can disturb it.
- Temporarily reroute deliveries, yard work, mowing, and outdoor play so nobody needs to pass close to the bees.
- Warn visitors, contractors, and neighbors about the location. A person who does not know about the swarm may approach it accidentally.
- If the swarm is near a shared path or public area, notify the responsible property manager or authority while you arrange professional help.
These precautions are especially important when the cluster is above a frequently used doorway or path, where people may walk underneath without noticing it.
After the swarm moves or is collected
Continue watching the original area from a distance. If bees begin using a crack, wall, eave, or other cavity, do not assume they are the same temporary cluster or that they will leave soon. Repeated entry and exit can indicate a colony that needs structural-removal expertise.
Keep any opening accessible to the specialist you have contacted, but do not enlarge it, seal it, or apply chemicals. If nobody can safely avoid the location, tell the professional that the site remains an active access route so the response can be prioritized appropriately.
Quick Recap
A simple decision checklist
- Cluster visible in the open? Keep away and identify whether the location can be avoided.
- Safe to avoid? Leave the swarm undisturbed and allow time for scouts to choose a site.
- Near unavoidable traffic? Contact a beekeeper who collects swarms through local Extension or a beekeeping association.
- Bees entering a structure? Treat it as a possible established colony and call a specialist; never plug or spray the entrance.
- Bees attacking? Get into a building, vehicle, or shed, avoid swatting and water, and call 911 if someone is being attacked.
