No publicly documented standalone APK download is identified on xAI’s current download page. Avoid files described as “modded,” “cracked,” “premium unlocked,” or “unlimited.”
Is there an official Grok APK?
Google Play normally installs Android app packages in the background, so you do not need to download an APK manually. xAI’s official Grok page sends Android users to Google Play rather than to a separately published APK file.

The listing showed 100M+ downloads, a 4.8-star rating, and an update dated August 17, 2026, when reviewed on August 18. Those figures change and are useful signals only; they are not proof by themselves. Compare the developer, description, icon, reviews, and the link from xAI’s website.
Install Grok from Google Play
- Install available Android and Google Play services updates.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Search for Grok AI, or open the official listing directly.
- Confirm that the developer is xAI and that the listing corresponds to
ai.x.grok. - Read the current permissions and Data safety section before installing.
- Tap Install. Google’s general path is to find the app, review its information, and tap Install: Google Android Help.
- Tap Open after installation and sign in with an X or email account.
- Try a basic text prompt first. Grant photo, microphone, file, or notification access only when a feature genuinely requires it.
xAI’s current listing describes answers, image and video generation, voice conversations, real-time information from X, and image uploads. Features and availability can change.
Review privacy and permissions before using it
The Play listing’s developer-provided Data safety section says the app may share photos and videos, app activity, and other data with third parties; collect location, personal information, and other data; encrypt data in transit; and allow deletion requests. These disclosures can vary by region, use, age, and later policy updates, so read the live listing.

Checklist for an APK you already have
Verify the source
- Prefer a direct release from xAI or an organization that can cryptographically establish xAI’s provenance.
- Reject unsolicited ads, pop-ups, Telegram posts, social links, file-sharing pages, and redirect-heavy download buttons.

- Be cautious with split APK bundles that require an unfamiliar installer.

Review permissions
Stop if a supposed Grok app requests SMS access, accessibility control, notification access, device-administrator privileges, call logs, contacts without a clear reason, overlays, installation of other apps, cryptocurrency-wallet access, or payment access. Google identifies internet-sideloaded apps requesting sensitive permissions such as RECEIVE_SMS, READ_SMS, NOTIFICATION_LISTENER, and ACCESSIBILITY as high-risk because those permissions are frequently abused for financial fraud.
If you must sideload
Menu names differ by Android version and manufacturer. These steps describe the risk-managed process, not an endorsement of an unverified Grok file.

- Verify the source, signature or checksum, filename, and permissions before opening the file.
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled.
- Open the APK from the browser or file manager.
- If prompted, open that specific source app’s Install unknown apps setting.
- Enable Allow from this source temporarily.
- Return to the file and install it.
- Disable Allow from this source immediately afterward.
- Review the installed app’s permissions and run a Play Protect scan.

Why Android or Google Play refuses the install
Grok is not available
Check country and Google-account region, device certification, Android compatibility, storage, parental or work-profile restrictions, Play Store synchronization, and network, VPN, DNS, or firewall interference. A device without Google Play may need the web version instead. Do not assume a VPN or falsified Play country will solve the problem; it can create account, update, payment, or licensing complications.
Download pending
- Check the connection and available storage.
- Pause or cancel other Play downloads.
- Restart the phone.
- Update or clear Play Store data only after checking your manufacturer’s menu labels.
App not installed
Possible causes include insufficient storage, incompatible Android software or hardware, a conflicting installation, a corrupt file, a split-package mismatch, a Play Protect or developer-verification block, or a work-profile policy. Do not keep trying random APK versions.
Play Protect blocks the file
Stop, note the filename and source, and delete the file unless its origin and integrity can be independently established. If it was installed, remove it, review permissions, and change credentials that were used with it.
The app redirects to Google Play
This can reflect licensing, integrity, or anti-tampering checks. Do not attempt a bypass. Install the official Play version or use grok.com.

Use Grok without installing an APK
Open grok.com when the Play listing is unavailable, the device lacks Google Play, or you do not want sideloading risk. xAI identifies Grok as available on the web and Android. The browser experience may differ from the native app, but it avoids an unverified package.
Android developer verification changes
Google says developer-verification protections are scheduled to begin September 30, 2026, initially in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with broader expansion planned globally in 2027, on certified Android devices running Android 8 and newer. This is a rollout plan, not a claim that every user already sees the same prompt.
Verified developers can still distribute outside Google Play. Advanced users may use an additional risk-acknowledgment flow for unverified developers, and ADB remains available for developers installing apps on their own devices. If a fake Grok APK is already installed
- Disconnect the app from sensitive accounts if it is running.
- Revoke its permissions and uninstall it.
- Check for new companion apps, device-admin privileges, accessibility services, notification access, VPN profiles, and unknown accounts.
- Run Google Play Protect.
- From a separate trusted device, change passwords entered into the app and enable multifactor authentication.
- Review banking, email, social, and password-manager activity.
- Contact your financial institution immediately if payment or banking data may have been exposed.
- If the app cannot be removed or the phone behaves abnormally, back up essential files and consider a factory reset.
xAI’s FAQ also warns that third-party apps using Grok credentials can create safety concerns; revoke credentials and change them if you used such an app.
