Use Windows’ own storage controls, review every category, and delete only what you recognize. Start at Settings > System > Storage to see what is consuming space. Then use Temporary files, Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, or Disk Cleanup. Treat Downloads, cloud files, and especially Previous Windows installation(s) as separate decisions rather than harmless cache data.
What counts as a temporary file?
Windows and applications create short-lived data for updates, installation work, error reporting, thumbnails, web content, and other tasks. Some of it can be regenerated; some categories shown in the cleanup screens are not temporary at all. The storage pages can also list personal files, old operating-system files, large files, and unused applications.

That distinction matters because the amount shown beside a category is not a blanket recommendation to delete it. Read the category name and its description, consider whether you still need the files, and select only items you understand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The paths below use Microsoft’s current Settings terminology; if your screen uses slightly different wording, choose the equivalent storage category rather than guessing.

Before you start: make the cleanup decision reversible where possible
Close applications that are actively installing, updating, or saving files. A program may recreate a cache while you are cleaning, which can change the final amount of free space. If a category contains files you may need, copy those files to a known location before selecting the category.
For ordinary temporary data, Windows’ built-in controls are the safest starting point because they show categories and estimates before confirmation. Do not download a third-party “cleaner” simply because the drive is full. Microsoft’s built-in workflows address the temporary-file task without adding another program that could make broader deletion choices.
Remember that cleanup is not a substitute for a backup. If a file is important, keep a separate copy before removing anything, especially when the item is in Downloads, a synced cloud folder, or a previous Windows installation.
Check what is using space before deleting anything
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Wait for Windows to calculate the drive breakdown. The system drive is normally C:, but the drive letter can differ on a customized installation.
- Inspect the categories and note whether the pressure comes from temporary data, applications, documents, pictures, videos, cloud content, or another category.
- Open Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations to see the individual selections and the amount Windows says each could free.
Do not begin by selecting every checkbox. The initial storage view is a diagnosis step; it prevents you from trying to solve a personal-file problem by deleting system caches.
Storage Sense’s automatic work is focused on the system drive. If another internal or external drive is full, review that drive separately in Settings and do not assume that a Storage Sense run on C: will clean it.
Choose the safest built-in cleanup method
| Tool | How it works | Best use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary files in Settings | Shows categories you can inspect and select manually. | A one-time cleanup when you want to see each category first. | Some entries are not disposable caches; read descriptions before selecting. |
| Cleanup recommendations | Suggests removable temporary items and can identify large or unused files and unused applications. | Finding several types of space consumers from one screen. | Large files and unused apps are not necessarily temporary files and may contain data you want. |
| Storage Sense | Automates selected cleanup on the system drive, usually C:. | Ongoing maintenance after you have reviewed its settings. | Downloads and cloud-provider files are not managed by default, but enabling those options can change what is removed or made online-only. |
| Disk Cleanup | Classic Windows utility for choosing temporary and system-file categories. | A manual fallback when Storage Sense is unavailable or you prefer its interface. | System categories still require careful review, particularly the previous Windows installation. |
The practical difference is automation versus review. Storage Sense can run according to a trigger or schedule, while Temporary files, Cleanup recommendations, and Disk Cleanup put a list in front of you for a deliberate decision. Use manual review first if you have never inspected the categories on this PC.

Method 1: review and remove Temporary files in Settings
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Temporary files. Windows may take a moment to calculate the list.
- Read each category name and its description. Check only categories you intend to remove.
- Look at the total estimated space to be freed. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed result or a performance benchmark.
- Select Remove files (or the equivalent confirmation button) and wait for Windows to finish.
- Return to the Storage page and allow it to recalculate. If the drive is still nearly full, identify the largest remaining category instead of repeatedly deleting the same temporary entries.
Categories that need extra attention
- Downloads: These can be files you deliberately saved. Do not select a Downloads option unless you have checked the folder and backed up or moved anything you want to keep.
- Recycle Bin: Emptying it permanently removes its contents. Restore anything needed before confirming. Storage Sense can clean the Recycle Bin automatically after a period when that setting is enabled, so review the rule rather than assuming deleted items will remain available.
- Windows update or installation files: They may be recreated later, but removing them can affect your ability to use a pending update or repair workflow. Read the description Windows provides.
- Previous Windows installation(s): This is not routine cache cleanup. It contains files used to return to the earlier Windows version.
- Other categories containing personal data: A category can be listed alongside temporary files without being disposable. If the description is unclear, leave it unchecked and investigate its location first.
Windows may display a different set of categories after an update, a feature installation, or a second scan. Treat each new list as a fresh review rather than relying on a previous selection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Previous Windows installation: the irreversible decision
After an upgrade, Windows can list a previous installation. Removing it deletes the files required to roll back to the earlier version. Microsoft states that this deletion cannot be undone.
Before selecting it, decide whether the current installation is stable and whether you have finished testing drivers, applications, and hardware. If you may need to return to the prior Windows version, leave the category selected off and keep the files. If you do remove it, the rollback option that depended on those files is gone; that is a recovery decision, not ordinary temporary-file maintenance.
Do not treat the size of this category as proof that it is safe to remove. A large amount of reclaimable space can be a reason to investigate, not a reason to click confirmation immediately. If the upgrade was recent or a device has unresolved problems, preserving the previous installation may be more valuable than recovering the space today.
Method 2: configure Storage Sense without surprise deletions
Storage Sense is Windows’ automated storage feature. It works on the system drive and, with its default behavior, can run when the device is low on disk space to remove unnecessary temporary files. Microsoft describes Storage Sense as off by default, although Windows may enable handling of selected temporary files during a low-space situation.

- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Storage Sense.
- Review the schedule or trigger shown for automatic cleanup. The exact choices depend on your Windows build.
- Review every option concerning temporary files, the Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud content before turning the feature on or changing its schedule.
- Leave personal-file locations under manual control unless you have a deliberate retention policy and a backup.
- Run the available cleanup command, or allow the selected schedule to operate, only after confirming the settings.
Downloads and cloud-provider files are opt-in decisions
Storage Sense does not manage Downloads or cloud-provider files by default. Settings can enable cleanup of files in those locations or make cloud content online-only. Those actions may be appropriate for a device with a known backup and a clear synchronization policy, but they are not automatically safe merely because Storage Sense offers them.

Rechargeable and reusable friendly compared to traditional disposable compressed air can, and no liquid or ice forms during the cleaning process, protecting your electronic devices from damage. More powerful and economical.
Check which account, folder, age rule, and online-only behavior the setting applies to. Open the relevant folder or cloud service first, verify that important files are synchronized or backed up, and then enable the narrowest rule that meets your goal. “Online-only” also changes local availability: a file may remain represented in the cloud while no longer being stored on the PC for offline use.
If several people use the computer, make sure everyone who relies on the Downloads folder or synced files understands the rule. Automatic cleanup is convenient only when its scope and timing match the household or organization’s retention policy.
Method 3: use Cleanup recommendations
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Cleanup recommendations if it appears.
- Review each group separately. Windows may show temporary files, large or unused files, and unused applications.
- Expand a group to inspect file names, locations, or applications before selecting anything.
- Keep personal files and applications you still use unchecked, then confirm the selected cleanup.
Cleanup recommendations is useful when temporary files are only part of the problem. Do not describe every recommendation as a temporary file: deleting an unused application or moving a large video is a different action with different consequences. An application may also have settings, saved projects, or libraries that you need even if Windows considers it unused.

If a large file is unfamiliar, note its location and identify the program that created it before deciding whether to remove it.
Method 4: use Disk Cleanup when you want manual control
Disk Cleanup is Microsoft’s documented fallback when Storage Sense is unavailable. It is also useful when you prefer a traditional list of file types.
- Open Start and search for Disk Cleanup.
- Launch the utility and choose the drive Windows asks you to clean, normally the system drive.
- Review the file-type list and the estimated space for each entry.
- Select only the categories you recognize and intend to remove. Open the description for an unfamiliar item before checking it.
- Confirm the cleanup and wait for the utility to finish.
If Disk Cleanup offers an option for system files, the list may change after Windows rescans the drive. Review the expanded list again rather than assuming the earlier selections are still the complete set. Apply the same caution to the previous Windows installation and to any category that could contain personal data.

Disk Cleanup is not a license to remove every item marked as system-related. The fact that a category is offered by the utility means Windows can describe an action; it does not mean the action has no recovery or workflow consequences.
What to do when the problem is personal files
Temporary-file cleanup cannot solve a drive filled by photos, videos, project folders, virtual machines, installers, or other files you want to retain. In Storage, open the categories that are largest and inspect the files before deleting anything.
Microsoft suggests moving retained personal files to separate storage such as a USB drive or SD card. This is optional and separate from deleting temporary files. You do not need to buy external storage to remove temporary files; consider it only when personal files are the genuine source of the space pressure.
- Choose a destination with enough capacity and a file system compatible with the devices that must read it.
- Copy the files rather than deleting the originals immediately.
- Open several copied files from the external drive to verify that the transfer succeeded.
- Keep the external drive safely connected until verification is complete, then delete the original only if you have decided the second copy is an adequate backup.
Do not move folders used by Windows or applications merely because they are large. Use the application’s own storage or library settings for data that must remain in a specific location. If you cannot identify a folder’s owner, leave it in place while you investigate.
How to avoid common cleanup mistakes
- Deleting everything with one checkbox: Categories have different purposes and risks. Select deliberately.
- Assuming “temporary” means “personal-data-free”: Downloads, browser-related data, crash files, and application caches can include information you may need.
- Enabling aggressive Storage Sense rules: Automatic cleanup is convenient only when its folder, age, and cloud behavior match your backup plan.
- Removing the previous installation immediately after upgrading: Wait until you are confident you will not need to roll back; deletion is irreversible.
- Expecting a speed boost: The documented purpose is reclaiming storage. No fixed performance improvement or typical space-saving amount is guaranteed.
- Repeating cleanup without checking the largest category: If the drive remains full, investigate applications and personal files rather than repeatedly clearing small caches.
- Cleaning the wrong drive: Storage Sense is centered on the system drive. Confirm the drive letter before using Disk Cleanup or another manual tool.
- Deleting while a backup or transfer is incomplete: Verify copied files and synchronized cloud content before removing the original.
A cautious decision checklist
- Have you opened Settings > System > Storage and identified the category using space?
- Did you read each selected category and its estimated amount?
- Did you inspect Downloads and confirm what can be removed?
- Did you review cloud-storage behavior before enabling any Storage Sense option?
- Are you intentionally giving up rollback by removing Previous Windows installation(s)?
- Have you copied and verified personal files before deleting originals?
- Did you recheck Storage after cleanup to confirm which problem remains?
Which method should you use?
| Your situation | Recommended path |
|---|---|
| You want a one-time, visible review of temporary categories. | Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files. |
| You want Windows to suggest several kinds of removable content. | Cleanup recommendations, with large files and unused apps reviewed separately from temporary files. |
| You want recurring maintenance on the system drive. | Storage Sense, after checking its Recycle Bin, Downloads, and cloud settings. |
| Storage Sense is unavailable or you prefer the classic utility. | Disk Cleanup, with a fresh review after scanning for system files. |
| Personal files are the main source of usage. | Move selected files to verified external storage or another suitable location; temporary-file removal alone will not address the cause. |
| You are unsure whether a category is safe. | Leave it unchecked, read Microsoft’s description, and investigate its location before deciding. |
After cleanup: verify the result
- Return to Settings > System > Storage and wait for the totals to refresh.
- Confirm that free space increased by roughly the amount Windows estimated, allowing for recalculation and files recreated by running applications.
- Open essential applications and confirm that their libraries and recent work are present.
- If an application reports missing data, stop deleting files and restore from the Recycle Bin or your backup where possible.
- For continuing low-space warnings, use the category breakdown to investigate large applications or personal files instead of escalating automatically to more destructive cleanup.
A smaller-than-expected change does not necessarily mean the cleanup failed. Windows can recalculate categories, and applications can recreate temporary data. The useful next step is to identify the largest remaining category, not to repeat every deletion blindly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to delete all temporary files in Windows?
Not automatically. Review each category in Settings or Disk Cleanup first. Downloads, Recycle Bin contents, cloud-provider files, and a previous Windows installation can have consequences beyond clearing a cache.

Will Storage Sense delete my Downloads folder?
Not by default. Storage Sense does not manage Downloads or cloud-provider files unless you enable settings that apply to them. Read the folder, age, and synchronization options before turning those rules on.
What happens if I delete Previous Windows installation(s)?
Windows removes the files needed to return to the earlier Windows version. Microsoft says that deletion cannot be undone, so keep the category until you are confident the current installation works properly.
Which is better, Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup?
Storage Sense is the automated option for the system drive. Disk Cleanup is a manual fallback when Storage Sense is unavailable or when you prefer to inspect a traditional list of file types. Either way, review selections before confirming.
Why did cleanup free less space than Windows estimated?
The displayed amount is an estimate. Storage totals can be recalculated after cleanup, and running applications may recreate temporary files. Check the updated category breakdown before taking further action.
Do I need an external drive to clean temporary files?
No. External storage is optional and is relevant when personal files, such as photos or videos, are filling the drive and you want to keep them. Copy and verify retained files before deleting the originals.
Can I use Cleanup recommendations to remove unused apps?
Yes, if the option appears, but unused applications are a separate category from temporary files. Check the app name and confirm that you no longer need its data or projects before removing it.
What should I do if Storage Sense is missing?
Use the Settings storage categories that are available, or search Start for Disk Cleanup. Select the drive, review the file types, and confirm only categories you recognize.
