Can I take a 20,000 mAh power bank on a plane?
For U.S. passenger flights, a power bank is treated as a spare lithium-ion battery. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says spare batteries must travel in the cabin, not checked baggage. Whether a particular 20,000 mAh unit is allowed depends on its watt-hour rating and the operating airline’s rules. A capacity in mAh alone is not enough to determine Wh because the voltage matters.

Look for a Wh marking on the power bank’s label or casing. If Wh is not shown, calculate it using the battery’s voltage and capacity:

Wh = volts × amp-hours
Convert milliamp-hours to amp-hours by dividing by 1,000. For example, the FAA’s guidance illustrates the calculation with a 12-volt, 8-Ah battery: 12 × 8 = 96 Wh. That is only a formula example, not the rating of a 20,000 mAh power bank. Use the voltage and rating shown for your own unit. See the FAA’s watt-hour calculation guidance.
Know the FAA capacity limits
FAA passenger guidance sets these limits for spare lithium-ion batteries. Airlines may impose stricter rules, so check with the airline operating your flight before you travel.

These are FAA limits for U.S. passenger travel, not a guarantee that every airline or non-U.S. authority will accept the same battery. Confirm the applicable policy with your operating airline and check for any relevant security or international requirements. - Keep the power bank accessible in your cabin bag so you can remove it if the bag is gate-checked.
- Protect it from damage and keep its terminals from touching metal objects or other items that could cause a short circuit.
- Use one of the FAA’s suggested protections: original retail packaging, tape over the terminals, a battery case or sleeve, or a snug separate plastic bag. These are examples of ways to protect the battery; a special pouch is not stated as a required purchase.

Do not carry a damaged or recalled power bank
Leave a damaged or recalled battery behind if it is likely to spark or generate dangerous heat, unless it has been made safe—for example, by removing the battery where appropriate. A lithium-ion battery can enter thermal runaway after damage, overheating, water exposure, overcharging, inadequate protection, or a manufacturing defect. If a battery or device overheats, swells, smokes, or burns during the flight, tell a cabin crew member immediately. Do not wait to see whether the condition resolves on its own.

Before you leave for the airport
- Read the label: Find the Wh marking, or calculate Wh from the stated voltage and amp-hours.
- Check the limit: Confirm the rating falls within FAA passenger limits and review the operating airline’s current battery policy, especially for a unit over 100 Wh.
- Inspect and protect it: Do not bring a damaged or recalled unit that could spark or overheat; protect its terminals against short circuits.
- Keep it in the cabin: Pack it in your carry-on and remove it if that bag is gate-checked.
