Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuying a used CPU can be a good way to save money, provided the exact chip fits your motherboard and you can verify its condition, operation, and return terms before paying. Check compatibility first, inspect the processor and packaging, ask for a credible demonstration, and treat any warranty claim as unverified until the responsible seller or retailer confirms it.
1. Confirm the CPU will work with your PC
Ask the seller for a clear photo of the processor’s model marking or written confirmation of the exact model number. Then check the motherboard maker’s CPU Support List for your specific board model and revision. Socket compatibility alone is not enough: a board may need a particular BIOS version, and not every processor for a socket is supported by every board.

For AMD systems, AMD directs buyers to the motherboard maker’s CPU Support List, memory QVL, and BIOS information. For Intel processors, use Intel’s processor identification resources and Intel ARK specifications alongside the motherboard support page. Confirm that the board has, or can be updated to, the required BIOS before purchasing.
Check the memory type and cooler requirements as well. A CPU upgrade can turn into a more expensive platform change if your board, memory, or cooling solution does not meet the chip’s needs.
#1 Best Overall

- 6 Cores and 12 processing threads, bundled with the AMD Wraith Stealth cooler
- 4.2 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 19 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform
2. Inspect the processor and packaging
Request sharp, well-lit photos of the top markings, underside contacts or pins, package edges, and retail label if one is included. Look for cracks, chips, deformation, deep scratches, missing parts, contamination, or signs of heat damage. On a pin-based CPU, check for bent or missing pins; on a contact-pad design, look for damaged or missing pads.
Intel notes that motherboard sockets may leave marks during normal use, so ordinary contact marks are not automatically evidence of damage. Distinguish those from bent contacts, chipped edges, or other visible defects. If photos are blurry or omit the underside, ask for better images before deciding.

If the CPU is in AMD retail packaging
For AMD boxed processors, compare the CPU serial marking visible through the packaging window with the serial on the secured label, scan the label’s QR code, and inspect the tamper-evident features. AMD describes this as a retail-box authenticity check; it does not establish authenticity for a loose used processor. For a loose chip, give more weight to seller documentation, recourse through the point of purchase, and a working demonstration.
3. Ask for evidence that it works
Ask the seller to show the exact model recognized in BIOS or system information and demonstrate a successful boot in a compatible system. A boot demo is useful evidence, but it does not prove the CPU will remain stable in every game or workload.

- Game Without Compromise. Play harder and work smarter with Intel Core 14th Gen processors
- 20 cores (8 P-cores plus 12 E-cores) and 28 threads. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 included
- Up to 5.6 GHz with Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 gives you smooth game play, high frame rates, and rapid responsiveness
- Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) or 700-series chipset-based motherboards
- DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games
If there is a reported problem, AMD’s troubleshooting guidance suggests swapping the processor into another known-working compatible system to see whether the issue follows the CPU. Agree on any test before meeting; do not let pressure to pay quickly substitute for reasonable checks. If you cannot conduct a fuller test until installation at home, ask for a written return window covering that period. There is no single stress-test program, duration, or pass threshold established here for every CPU generation and platform, so avoid treating an arbitrary test as a universal guarantee.
4. Check the seller, returns, and payment terms
Before paying, consider the seller’s identity and transaction history, request the original purchase date and receipt if available, and read the current return and buyer-protection terms for the actual platform, payment method, and country. Protections vary, and a platform’s rules are not a guarantee that a claim will succeed.

- Built for the Next Generation of Gaming. Game and multitask without compromise powered by Intel’s performance hybrid architecture on an unlocked processor.
- Discrete graphics required
- Compatible with Intel 600 series and 700 series chipset-based motherboards
- The processor features Socket LGA-1700 socket for installation on the PCB
- 30 MB of L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
- For a shipped CPU: Keep the listing and messages, ask for suitable protective packaging, and document the parcel as it arrives. Recording the package opening may help preserve a record of its condition, but it does not guarantee that a platform will accept the video as proof.
- For an in-person purchase: Choose a safe public meeting place and arrange the demonstration in advance. Leave if the seller rushes you or refuses reasonable checks.
5. Verify warranty instead of assuming it transfers
Intel says it does not honor warranty requests for used processors through its warranty service. Intel also excludes counterfeit or remarked parts and certain other categories. AMD’s cited warranty guidance applies to processors purchased new through retail; for separately sold processors, AMD directs authenticity and warranty questions to the point of purchase. Ask the seller for the original receipt and verify any remaining seller or retailer coverage directly. The answer can depend on the region, sales channel, proof of purchase, and current terms.
6. Confirm cooling costs before agreeing on a price
Check that your cooler supports the CPU’s socket and has adequate capacity for the exact processor and intended use. Intel’s cooling guidance also calls out proper mounting, fan power and operation, clear airflow, and thermal interface material. A cooler bundled with the CPU may be missing, worn, or unsuitable, so include any replacement cost in your total before comparing the used price with other options.
