Do not treat an online wedding invitation or ticket as genuine until you independently verify the event, the people involved, the ticketing arrangement and your ability to leave safely. Contact the venue using details you find yourself, confirm that outside guests are admitted and that the platform is authorized, keep payment inside a checkout with dispute rights, and tell someone you trust exactly where you will be. A ticket, even a paid one, does not prove that the hosts are real or that you are socially welcome.
This guide gives you a practical way to decide whether to proceed, how to check a ticket and venue, what information not to share, and what to do if the story changes or you feel pressured.

Start with the assumption that the invitation is unverified
A stranger’s wedding reached through a direct message, social profile, chat group or unfamiliar ticket page may be legitimate, but the invitation itself is not evidence. Treat every important detail as unconfirmed until you check it through a separate channel. Scammers can copy real venue names, wedding photos, ticket layouts and payment pages, then use urgency or romance to make a target act before checking.

- Is there a real wedding at this place and time? The venue or organizer must confirm this independently.
- Am I actually invited and allowed to enter? The couple, organizer or venue must explain how an unconnected guest is admitted.
A genuine event can still have a fake ticket, a duplicated transfer or a seller who is not authorized to resell. Conversely, a real ticket does not create an obligation to attend or a right to private information about the couple.

Verify the wedding with the venue, not the sender
Find contact details independently
Do not use the phone number, email address or web link supplied in the message. Search for the venue’s official website yourself, check the address against an independent map or business listing, and use the published main number. If the venue is a hotel, restaurant or public hall, call its general reception or events desk rather than a number in the invitation.
Ask specific, limited questions
Explain that you received an invitation or ticket and need to confirm logistics. Ask whether a wedding is scheduled on the stated date, whether the named couple or organizer is associated with the booking, whether unconnected guests are admitted, and whether the named ticketing platform is authorized. You do not need the couple’s private guest list, room number or personal contact details.
Venues may be unable to disclose customer information. That is not automatically suspicious. They should still be able to confirm whether an event of that type is scheduled and whether the proposed entry process exists. If staff say the date, room or organizer cannot be found, pause the plan. Do not let the sender explain away a failed venue check by claiming the event is “secret,” “off the books” or too sensitive for staff to acknowledge.

Check every detail for consistency
Compare the venue’s response with the invitation, ticket and messages. Record the date, local start time, address, room or entrance, organizer name, ticket type, seat or access category, and any identification requirement. A mismatch in spelling, date format, city, capacity, dress instructions or entry gate is a reason to stop and ask the venue to clarify—not a reason to guess.
Check whether the people are who they claim to be
Use more than a profile and a photograph
Search the names, usernames and claimed organizations independently. Look for long-standing, consistent public information rather than a newly created account with polished wedding images. The Federal Trade Commission recommends searching for information about an online contact and using a reverse-image search on profile pictures. A photograph that appears under several unrelated names, or only on low-quality reposts, deserves extra caution.
Let trust develop slowly
The Federal Bureau of Investigation advises going slowly, asking questions and involving trusted people. Ask ordinary, verifiable questions about the ceremony schedule, venue policies, how invitations were distributed and why you were contacted. Notice whether answers remain consistent over time and across channels. A person who becomes angry when you verify details, refuses a normal video call, or insists that you keep the relationship secret is creating risk.

Do not send a scan of your passport, driver’s licence, payment card, tax number, account login, one-time code or full home address to someone known only online. A venue may need identification at entry, but you can confirm the requirement directly with venue staff and show the document in person. Never send an image of an identity document through an unverified chat simply because a sender says it is needed to “register” you.

Authorization is the first test
Prefer a ticket issued through the venue’s box office, the organizer’s official site or a ticketing service that the venue confirms. The UK Home Office campaign advice is direct: “Only buy tickets from the venue’s box office or an official ticketing website.” A link supplied only through a direct message is weaker evidence than a platform reached from the venue or organizer’s independently found website.
Inspect the ticket record
Check that the ticket names the correct event, venue, date, time, entry category and purchaser or transfer status. Look for terms describing transfer restrictions, identity checks, barcode activation, resale limits and refund eligibility. A screenshot of a barcode is not proof of a valid, unused ticket; the same code can be sent to multiple people or cancelled after the screenshot is taken.
Ask the venue or authorized platform whether tickets are transferable and how an official transfer appears in the recipient’s account. Do not rely on a seller’s claim that a PDF, screenshot or unusual “manual release” is normal. If the platform’s terms say the original purchaser must attend, the ticket may be unusable even when the barcode scans.
Read refund and dispute terms before checkout
Identify who is responsible if the event is cancelled, the ticket is invalid, the venue refuses entry or the seller fails to transfer it. Note deadlines, evidence requirements and exclusions for private resale. New Zealand Consumer Protection warns that resale tickets can be fake, duplicated, unusable or difficult to refund. A platform that hides its legal identity, customer-service route or refund process is a poor choice for a high-risk invitation.
Compare sources using the same criteria
| Check | Official seller or venue-confirmed platform | Private seller or message-only link |
|---|---|---|
| Authorization | Venue or organizer confirms the seller | No independent confirmation |
| Identity confidence | Account and transfer record are verifiable | Relies on a profile, chat and screenshots |
| Payment protection | Checkout explains disputes and refunds | Often asks for irreversible payment |
| Entry rules | Transfer and identification requirements are stated | Rules change in messages or are vague |
| Data requested | Only information needed for the ticket | May request documents, codes or banking details |
| Ability to leave safely | Venue, transport and support contacts are known | Plans depend on a stranger |
Choose the source with the strongest independent confirmation, not the lowest price or the fastest answer.

Use payment methods that preserve a remedy
Keep the transaction inside protected checkout
Canada’s Competition Bureau recommends paying by a method such as a credit card that provides dispute and refund protection, and saving confirmation emails and receipts. Use the platform’s own checkout and make sure the browser address and account belong to the verified service. Save the order page, terms, seller identity, transfer instructions, confirmation email and receipt as files or screenshots.
Reject irreversible payment requests
Do not pay by bank transfer, cryptocurrency, gift card, cash courier, money-transfer service or a payment link that bypasses the ticket platform. These methods can be difficult or impossible to reverse. The FTC says, “If that person asks for money, no matter how friendly the online relationship seems, it’s probably a scam.” The FBI’s guidance is equally clear: “Never send money to anyone you have only communicated with online or by phone.”
Do not pay a second “release,” “security,” “tax,” “verification” or “refundable deposit” fee after the first payment. A demand that becomes urgent, confidential or larger after you hesitate is a strong reason to stop. Contact your card issuer or payment provider through its official app or number if you already paid and suspect fraud; do not use a recovery service recommended by the same sender.

Limit the information checkout receives
Use a payment account with transaction alerts and, where available, a virtual card number or spending limit. A legitimate ticket service should not need your online-banking password, one-time authentication code or full account credentials. Never read a verification code to a person who calls claiming to be platform support. If a site requests more identity data than the venue’s published entry policy requires, close it and verify the requirement independently.
Confirm that you are genuinely welcome
Ask the couple or organizer directly
Paying for admission does not create a social entitlement. Ask whether the couple knows you are attending, why you were invited, and whether an unconnected guest is acceptable. Confirm the dress code, ceremony and reception access, gift expectations, photography rules, plus-one policy and whether children are permitted. Ask where you should check in and whom to contact if the ticket fails.
Use a communication channel you can verify independently when possible. If all answers come through one person who refuses to let you contact the venue or organizer, decline. Hosts who cannot answer basic logistical questions without secrecy or pressure are not offering a safe invitation.

Respect privacy and boundaries
Do not publish the couple’s names, schedule, room number, guest list or photographs without permission. Avoid requesting private details that are irrelevant to entry. You can be polite while still saying no: “I cannot attend unless the venue confirms the event and the ticket is issued through its authorized channel.” A genuine host should accept that boundary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMake a personal safety plan before travel
Tell a trusted person the full plan
Give someone you trust the venue address, date, expected arrival and departure times, names and usernames of the people you will meet, ticket details, transport plan and emergency contacts. Arrange check-in times before, during and after the event. Share live location if that is comfortable and reliable, and agree on a phrase that means you need help without explaining in public.
Keep control of transport and money
Use your own transport, a reputable taxi service or public transit you have researched. Do not depend on a stranger to collect you, provide accommodation or drive you home. Keep enough charged phone power, battery backup and money for an immediate return trip. Meet first in a public, staffed area such as the venue’s reception desk; do not go to a private home, hotel room or isolated parking area because someone says the event has moved.
Protect your identity and physical safety
- Keep your phone, identification, medication and payment cards with you.
- Do not surrender an identity document as a deposit.
- Limit alcohol or other substances so you can make decisions and leave.
- Tell venue staff that you are attending alone if you need help locating the authorized check-in point.
- Do not allow anyone to isolate you from public areas or your transport.
If you feel watched, blocked from leaving, threatened or pressured to hand over money or documents, move toward staff, security or a busy public area. Call local emergency services when there is an immediate danger.
Recognize red flags and leave early
Any single warning sign may have an innocent explanation, but several together should end the plan. Leave or cancel when:
- The venue cannot confirm the event, organizer or entry process.
- The ticket details do not match the venue’s records or the transfer cannot be verified.
- The sender insists on secrecy, urgency or a same-day payment deadline.
- You are pushed toward bank transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards or cash.
- The sender requests passwords, one-time codes, identity scans or unnecessary financial information.
- The story, names, photographs, dates or locations keep changing.
- You are told to meet somewhere private or are discouraged from telling friends.
- You are asked to pay additional fees after checkout.
Do not debate a person who is applying pressure. Stop responding, preserve the messages and block the account if appropriate. If you are already at the venue and entry is refused, speak to venue security or the box office rather than confronting the seller.

What to do if the ticket is fake or the event is not real
Protect yourself first
Move to a staffed public area, contact your trusted person and arrange transport home. If someone threatens you or prevents you from leaving, call emergency services. Do not follow a stranger to an alternative location to “fix” the ticket.
Preserve evidence
Keep the original messages, profile URLs, payment records, receipts, ticket files, email headers, phone numbers and screenshots showing dates and promises. Do not edit the files. Note when you contacted the venue and what it confirmed. This information can help a card issuer, platform investigator or law-enforcement agency.
Report through independent channels
Report the account, listing and payment activity to the ticketing platform using its official support page. Contact your card issuer or payment provider promptly and ask about a dispute or fraud claim. Report suspected fraud to the relevant consumer-protection or law-enforcement authority in your country. If the scam involved identity documents, change affected passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, monitor accounts and follow your government’s identity-theft guidance.
How common is online ticket fraud?
There is no reliable figure here for fake wedding invitations specifically. A UK Home Office survey published in 2026 found that 14% of surveyed gig-goers had bought a fake ticket, 77% of those purchases were made through online platforms, and losses totaled £150 million in the prior year. Those figures concern gig tickets, not weddings, so they indicate the scale of online-ticket risk generally and should not be presented as the prevalence of wedding scams.
A practical go/no-go checklist
Proceed only when every essential answer is “yes.”
- Has the venue confirmed the event, date and entry process using contact details you found independently?
- Has the couple or authorized organizer confirmed that you are genuinely welcome?
- Is the ticket issued or transferred through a venue-confirmed platform?
- Are transfer restrictions, identification rules and refund terms clear?
- Can you pay through a method with dispute protection without sending money directly to a stranger?
- Have you saved receipts and arranged check-ins, independent transport and a way to leave?
- Can you attend without sharing passwords, one-time codes or unnecessary identity documents?
If any answer is “no,” decline or pause until the missing fact is independently confirmed. A real wedding will still be real after you take time to verify it; a scam often depends on preventing that pause.
