Install your distribution’s XWayland package, log into a KDE Plasma Wayland session, and launch the X11 application normally. KWin usually starts XWayland automatically and presents each X11 window beside native Wayland windows. On Arch Linux, the package is xorg-xwayland.
What happens when an X11 app runs on KDE Wayland
Wayland is the display protocol used by the Plasma Wayland session. X11 applications do not speak Wayland directly, so Plasma uses XWayland as a compatibility layer. XWayland is a complete X11 server that runs as a Wayland client. The application connects to XWayland as though it were connected to a traditional X server, while XWayland connects to KWin and asks the compositor to display the windows.

In the normal rootless configuration, each X11 window is integrated into the desktop as an ordinary top-level window. You can move it, resize it, minimize it, place it on virtual desktops, and switch to it with the same window controls used for native Wayland applications. You do not normally see a separate X11 desktop or start an X server by hand.

This arrangement is intended for individual legacy or X11-only programs, not for recreating every part of an Xorg desktop. XWayland can provide the X11 display service an application needs, but it does not supply an X11 window manager, an entire X11 panel, or every desktop component that an application might expect.

Requirements before you start
- A working KDE Plasma installation with a Plasma (Wayland) session available at the login screen.
- The XWayland package supplied by your Linux distribution.
- An X11 application installed in the usual way.
- A graphical login rather than a text-only virtual console or an incomplete remote shell.
Package names vary by distribution. Arch Linux identifies the package as xorg-xwayland. Other distributions may include XWayland in a package with a different name or install it as part of their Plasma or Wayland desktop dependencies. Use your distribution’s package manager and documentation when the package name is not obvious; do not assume the Arch name applies everywhere.
Step 1: log into the Plasma Wayland session
At the display manager, select your user account and open the session selector, commonly shown as a menu or gear icon. Choose Plasma (Wayland), then sign in. The exact wording can differ slightly between display managers and distribution packages.
If you choose a session labelled simply Plasma, check the session details after login rather than relying on the label. A separate Plasma (X11) entry, where available, is the traditional Xorg session and is not needed for the normal XWayland workflow.

Arch Linux
On Arch Linux, install the package named xorg-xwayland with your normal package-management workflow. For example, using the standard package manager:
sudo pacman -S xorg-xwayland
If the package is already installed, the package manager will report that there is nothing to do. Keep the package synchronized with the rest of the system through the same update process you use for other graphical components.
Other distributions
Search your distribution’s repositories for an XWayland package or consult its KDE Wayland installation guidance. The package may be pulled in automatically by Plasma, but a minimal installation can omit it. Do not install a second display server merely because an X11 application is involved: XWayland is the component that provides X11 compatibility inside the existing Wayland session.
Restart the session after installation
After adding a missing XWayland package, log out of Plasma and sign in again. Restarting the session gives KWin a clean opportunity to initialize its XWayland service. A full reboot is generally unnecessary unless your distribution’s package update specifically requests one.

Step 3: launch the X11 application normally
- Open the application launcher, a terminal, or the program’s desktop entry.
- Start the application exactly as you would in an Xorg session.
- Wait for the window to appear; you should not run an additional X server or manually start an XWayland process.
For a terminal launch, use the program’s normal command. If the application has a desktop file, selecting it from the launcher follows the same path. KWin normally starts or connects to XWayland when the first X11 client needs it, then maps the application window into the Wayland desktop.
Some programs expose an option that explicitly selects a display backend. Leave that option at its default unless the application’s documentation requires a particular backend. Forcing an X11 display variable or starting a nested server can create a second problem instead of fixing the original one.
Verify that you are actually running Wayland
Open a terminal in the Plasma session and run:
echo "$XDG_SESSION_TYPE"
echo "$WAYLAND_DISPLAY"
In a Wayland session, XDG_SESSION_TYPE should print wayland. WAYLAND_DISPLAY should normally contain a name beginning with wayland-, such as wayland-0. These values describe the session in which the terminal is running, so check them from the same desktop login where you start the application.
These variables do not prove that every individual window is native Wayland. An X11 program can run through XWayland while the overall session remains Wayland. They are the first checks to make when you are unsure which session the display manager selected.
How to identify an individual XWayland window
KDE provides window inspection and debugging facilities that can reveal whether a selected window is native Wayland or an X11 client managed by XWayland. The names and locations of these diagnostic controls can vary with Plasma releases, so use the window-inspection tools available in your installation.
An X11 test utility such as xeyes is another practical check when it is available from your distribution’s repositories. Start it from the Plasma Wayland session and observe whether it appears as a normal desktop window. A test utility confirms that an X11 client can connect, but it does not diagnose every application-specific incompatibility.
Do not infer the backend solely from visual appearance. Rootless XWayland windows are deliberately integrated to look and behave like other desktop windows.

Fix “cannot open display” errors
The message usually means that the application cannot reach a usable X11 display connection. Work through these checks in order.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Confirm the graphical session
Make sure the command is running inside the logged-in Plasma desktop, not from a text console, a service account, or a shell launched before the graphical session started. Repeat the environment checks and confirm that XDG_SESSION_TYPE reports wayland.
Check that XWayland is installed
Verify the package through your distribution’s package manager. On Arch Linux, check for xorg-xwayland. If it is absent, install it and log out and back in so KWin can initialize the service.
Inspect display-related environment variables
Do not blindly copy a display variable from an old Xorg setup. A stale DISPLAY value can point to a server that no longer exists, while a command launched through a desktop entry may receive the correct environment automatically. If you deliberately changed DISPLAY, remove the override and retry from a fresh terminal in Plasma.
XWayland normally supplies an X11 display connection to clients started in the session. If a shell script sanitizes or replaces the desktop environment, run the program without that sanitization or adjust the script so it preserves the session’s display variables.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRetry after a clean login
Close the application, log out, sign back into Plasma (Wayland), and launch it again. This eliminates a partially initialized session as a cause. If a newly installed package still is not detected, restart the computer only after the normal logout/login cycle has failed.
When the application opens but renders incorrectly
Successful connection does not guarantee perfect compatibility. XWayland implements the X11 protocol and translates the resulting windows and input into Wayland compositor operations, but some X11 behavior is not fully backward-compatible. Rendering artifacts, broken menus, missing keyboard input, incorrect focus, or unusual clipboard behavior can therefore be application-specific XWayland issues.

Separate application bugs from session problems
- Test a small X11 utility such as
xeyes. If it works while the target program fails, the basic XWayland connection is functioning. - Launch the target application from a terminal and read its diagnostic output. Errors that mention a graphics library, toolkit, plugin, or driver point toward the application stack rather than the compositor’s ability to start XWayland.
- Try a new application window and a different virtual desktop. A single damaged window state can look like a system-wide failure.
- Check whether the problem occurs only with fractional scaling, multiple monitors, a particular GPU driver, or a specific application version. Those conditions can change how an X11 client is presented, even though XWayland itself is available.
Keep the distribution, graphics driver, Plasma components, and application updated through supported channels. If the program has a documented rendering-backend switch, follow that project’s instructions rather than guessing at environment variables.

No complete X11 desktop
XWayland’s rootless mode is designed to integrate individual X11 windows. It does not reproduce every X11 desktop component. An application that expects to manage the root window, provide an X11 panel, replace the window manager, or control other clients may not work as it did under a full Xorg desktop.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Window-manager assumptions
Some older programs rely on an X11 window manager or on behavior associated with the X11 root window. KWin remains the Wayland compositor in this setup; XWayland cannot turn it into an arbitrary X11 window manager. If the application’s core function depends on those assumptions, compatibility may stop at the point where its window appears.
Global input and desktop control
Wayland intentionally restricts several forms of global observation and control. XWayland can support the X11 interfaces exposed to its clients, but it cannot promise the same unrestricted access to every desktop surface that an Xorg session historically allowed. Tools that record all keystrokes, reposition other applications, or inspect unrelated windows can therefore behave differently or be blocked.
Security implications
XWayland is still an X server. X11 clients connected to the same XWayland instance can communicate through X11 mechanisms, so an X11 application should not be treated as having the same isolation as a native Wayland application. The Wayland security model limits many forms of cross-application access, but those protections do not automatically apply inside the X11 compatibility domain.
This matters when deciding whether to run an untrusted X11 program. Use the same caution you would use with an untrusted program in an Xorg session. Avoid assuming that moving the application into a Plasma Wayland session makes it unable to inspect or interact with other X11 clients connected to that XWayland server.

Performance expectations
For many ordinary desktop applications, performance through XWayland is described as nearly identical to X11. That is a qualitative expectation, not a universal benchmark or guarantee. Results depend on the application, graphics hardware, driver, compositor version, display scaling, monitor configuration, and rendering path.
Best Value
Judge performance using the workload that matters to you. A static utility window, a continuously scrolling interface, and a hardware-accelerated application exercise different parts of the stack. If only one program is slow, compare its native Wayland mode, if available, with its X11 mode and inspect its own rendering settings before concluding that the entire Plasma session is at fault.
When switching to Plasma X11 is the right fallback
Use the Plasma X11 session when the application requires a complete Xorg environment or when a critical X11 behavior remains incompatible with XWayland. At the login screen, select the separate Plasma (X11) session if your distribution still ships it. That session runs the desktop on Xorg instead of using Wayland with an X11 compatibility server.
Switching sessions is a practical compatibility decision, not a requirement for every X11 program. If the application opens and performs correctly through XWayland, staying in Wayland lets you keep native Wayland applications in the same desktop. If it depends on an X11 window manager, root-window behavior, or an integration component that XWayland does not provide, a full X11 session is the more predictable environment.
Distribution packaging changes over time. Some systems continue to offer a Plasma X11 session while others may make it optional or remove it from default installations. If the entry is missing, consult the distribution’s current Plasma session packages rather than assuming that installing XWayland will create an Xorg desktop.
A concise diagnostic checklist
- Session:
echo "$XDG_SESSION_TYPE"printswayland. - Wayland socket:
echo "$WAYLAND_DISPLAY"prints a value such aswayland-0. - Package: the distribution’s XWayland component is installed; on Arch Linux, that is
xorg-xwayland. - Launch method: start the program from the launcher, desktop file, or a terminal inside the graphical session.
- Basic test: an X11 utility such as
xeyescan open if you need to test the compatibility layer. - Window identity: use KDE’s available window-inspection or debugging facilities to check the target window.
- Compatibility: distinguish a program-specific rendering or input fault from a failure affecting every X11 client.
- Fallback: choose Plasma X11 at login when the program needs a complete Xorg desktop and that session is still supplied by your distribution.
Common questions answered
Do I need to start XWayland manually?
No. In a normal Plasma Wayland session, KWin starts or connects to XWayland when an X11 client needs it. Manual startup is unnecessary and can produce conflicting display connections.
Can I run native Wayland and X11 applications together?
Yes. That is the purpose of rootless XWayland integration: X11 windows and native Wayland windows appear together under the same Plasma compositor.
Why does installing XWayland not fix an application that still fails?
Installation only supplies the X11 compatibility server. The application may depend on unsupported X11 desktop components, a particular graphics path, an X11 window manager, or behavior that XWayland cannot reproduce. Test another X11 client and consider the Plasma X11 session when the requirement is broader than one application window.
Is XWayland as isolated as a native Wayland application?
No. XWayland remains an X server, and clients connected to the same instance can use X11 communication mechanisms. Treat X11 applications as having weaker isolation than native Wayland clients.
