Save a .bat file that calls wkhtmltopdf.exe with quoted input and output paths, then check its exit code immediately. Using the full executable path avoids “not recognized” errors caused by Windows not finding wkhtmltopdf on PATH; checking ERRORLEVEL lets the batch file report conversion failures to you or a scheduler.
Use a batch file with a full executable path
Create convert.bat in the same folder as input.html. Change the executable path if wkhtmltopdf is installed elsewhere.

echo Conversion complete: "%OUTPUT%"%~dp0 expands to the drive and directory containing the batch file, so the input and output paths do not depend on the folder from which you launch it. The set "NAME=value" form avoids accidentally including trailing spaces in a variable value. The quotation marks around the executable and file paths matter: the example installation folder includes a space.

Choose PATH or an explicit executable path
Use an explicit path to isolate lookup problems
The sample uses an absolute path to wkhtmltopdf.exe. If that file exists there, the batch file can run it even if the installation directory is not on PATH. If Windows says the executable was not found, correct the value of WKHTMLTOPDF to match its actual location.
To test the installed executable directly, run this in Command Prompt:
"C:Program Fileswkhtmltopdfbinwkhtmltopdf.exe" --versionThe manual documents --version. If this works but the bare command does not, the issue is command lookup rather than PDF rendering.
Use PATH for a shorter invocation
If the directory containing wkhtmltopdf.exe is already on PATH, you can use the command name:

if errorlevel 1 exit /b %errorlevel%For a batch job, the absolute path is often easier to maintain: it makes the selected executable explicit rather than depending on each user’s or scheduler’s environment. If you do rely on PATH, verify it in the same environment that will run the batch file.

Convert local HTML or a remote URL
Local HTML file
Pass the HTML file as the input object and a PDF filename as the output. The sample uses paths relative to the batch file. For a file elsewhere, set the full path and keep it quoted:

The usage manual documents file-access controls; check wkhtmltopdf -H or wkhtmltopdf --help for options available in your installed build.
Remote page
Use a quoted URL as the input object:
"%WKHTMLTOPDF%" "https://example.com" "%~dp0site.pdf"Replace the example URL with the page you need. The host must be reachable from the machine running the batch file. The manual also documents options for cookies, custom headers, proxy settings, and encoding when a page needs additional request configuration.
Quote paths and handle Command Prompt characters
Quote the executable, input, output, and any directory arguments, not only paths that currently contain spaces. Microsoft documents that spaces in paths require quotation marks and that special characters need appropriate quoting or escaping. Characters such as &, |, <, >, and parentheses can be interpreted by cmd.exe rather than passed as ordinary filename characters. Keep the executable invocation on one line unless you deliberately use the batch file’s line-continuation syntax. When constructing a command from variables, quote each variable expansion at the point where it becomes an argument, as in "%INPUT%". Quoting does not make arbitrary user-supplied command fragments safe; avoid placing untrusted text into a command line.

Make failures visible to a scheduler
In Command Prompt and batch files, a successful command returns exit code zero; a nonzero code indicates failure. Microsoft documents this convention in its exit command reference. The sample tests if errorlevel 1 immediately after wkhtmltopdf, prints the code to standard error, and uses exit /b to return it to the caller.
Check the status before running another command: later commands may change ERRORLEVEL. In a parent batch file or scheduled job, a nonzero result can then be handled as a failed conversion instead of a seemingly successful run. The sample returns code 2 when its configured executable does not exist; the conversion branch returns wkhtmltopdf’s own nonzero code.

For investigation, capture diagnostics from a command prompt or redirect standard error to a log file. The usage manual documents --log-level and --debug-javascript; use only options supported by your installed build. For example:

Use a visible loop when clarity matters
For a small set of predictable files, a loop keeps each conversion and its failure point easy to inspect. This example converts every HTML file in the batch file’s directory:

exit /b 0In a saved batch file, a loop variable uses two percent signs, as in %%F. This example stops at the first conversion failure and returns that code. If you prefer to process every file even when one fails, record failures and choose a final nonzero exit code rather than silently returning success.

The wkhtmltopdf manual documents --read-args-from-stdin: each input line is treated as a separate invocation. A producer can provide one quoted input/output pair per line and pipe those lines to wkhtmltopdf. This can reduce repeated process startup when that overhead is material, but makes per-file error handling less transparent than a loop. Review the manual’s exact argument-line format and reporting behavior before relying on stdin mode in an automated pipeline.
Know the renderer’s compatibility limits
wkhtmltopdf renders HTML to PDF using the Qt WebKit engine and runs headlessly without a display service, according to the project’s documentation. That engine and the exact installed build matter for modern sites: do not assume that current JavaScript or CSS will render as it does in a current desktop browser. Validate representative pages and inspect output after changing versions or source pages.
The project’s repository documentation says the repository was archived by its owner on January 2, 2023. That fact is a reason to validate your own workload, not proof that a particular installed binary will fail. The official project overview is at wkhtmltopdf.org.
