How to Run Windows Apps on Linux with Wine, Bottles, or CrossOver

You can run many Windows applications on Linux with Wine, manage Wine environments through Bottles, or use CodeWeavers’ guided CrossOver interface. None is a universal compatibility switch: support depends on the application, its version, the compatibility-layer version, and your Linux system. Check the current compatibility report for your exact application before installing or configuring anything.

What these tools actually do

Wine is the underlying compatibility layer. WineHQ describes it as software capable of running Windows applications on POSIX-compatible systems such as Linux, macOS, and BSD. Rather than simulating an entire Windows computer as a virtual machine or emulating a processor, Wine translates Windows application programming interface (API) calls into POSIX calls that Linux can provide. Read WineHQ’s project and download information at WineHQ’s download page.

Bottles and CrossOver use the same broad compatibility-layer approach but add management and installation workflows. Bottles is a Linux application for creating and managing separate Windows environments, called bottles, along with the runners (compatibility layers) used inside them. CrossOver is CodeWeavers’ commercial interface for installing Windows programs into bottles and adding launchers to the Linux desktop.

These are not equivalent to a Windows virtual machine. A virtual machine runs a complete Windows operating system; Wine-based tools run the target application through compatibility software. That distinction usually means less operating-system overhead, but it also means that an application can fail when it depends on Windows behavior the compatibility layer or its supporting components does not reproduce.

Check compatibility before choosing a setup

Start with the application, not the tool. Wine maintains an Application Database and feature information, while CrossOver provides its own compatibility resources and installer listings. Look for the application’s current entry, the tested version, the reported Wine or CrossOver version, and any notes about required components.

A report is evidence for a particular combination, not a promise for every installation. Results can change with a new application release, a different runner, a different Linux distribution, graphics drivers, system architecture, or a changed installer. If the report is old or concerns another application version, treat it as a starting point rather than a guarantee.

A practical pre-install checklist

  • Identify the exact Windows application and version you need.
  • Read the current Wine or CrossOver compatibility entry before downloading the installer.
  • Note required dependencies, launch options, and known limitations in the report.
  • Confirm that the application’s installer is available to you and that you have a legitimate license where one is required.
  • Decide whether you prefer manual control, a graphical manager, or a guided commercial workflow.

Choosing among Wine, Bottles, and CrossOver

Dimension Wine Bottles CrossOver
What it is A compatibility layer translating Windows API calls to POSIX calls. A Linux application for managing prefixes, runners, installers, and launches. A CodeWeavers product for installing and running Windows applications in bottles.
Setup style Distribution-specific package and setup steps; follow current instructions for your distribution. The official site recommends its Flatpak package; the first launch obtains runner-related components. A vendor installer with a guided application and bottle workflow.
Application-specific help Wine’s Application Database. Community installers and their compatibility grades. CodeWeavers compatibility resources and installer scripts for listed applications.
Best comparison question Is there a useful, current report for this application and Wine version? Is there an installer for this application and the bottle architecture and environment I need? Is the application listed, and does the current CrossOver guidance match my Linux setup?

No controlled test in the available documentation establishes a universal winner for speed, reliability, or application coverage. Choose based on the application report and the amount of configuration you want to handle.

Choose Wine when you want the underlying layer

Wine is the most direct route. It exposes the compatibility layer and leaves distribution, package, prefix, dependency, and launch decisions to you. That can be appropriate when you already understand your distribution’s packaging system or need to follow instructions written specifically for Wine.

Choose Bottles when you want separated, manageable environments

Bottles gives you a graphical way to create bottles, select runners, install supported software, and launch programs. It is useful when you want separate environments for different applications or when you prefer not to maintain every Wine setting by hand.

Choose CrossOver when guided installation is worth a commercial product

CrossOver packages the bottle workflow with installer scripts, compatibility information, and desktop integration. It can reduce manual setup for listed applications, while still requiring you to verify compatibility and accept that an unlisted or newly released application may not work.

Running an application with Wine directly

Wine’s installation procedure varies by Linux distribution, repository, architecture, and current Wine release. Do not copy a command intended for another distribution. Use the current instructions on WineHQ’s download page together with your distribution’s package documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: verify the application entry

Search the Wine Application Database for the exact program and version. Read the rating, tested configuration, installation notes, required libraries, and known failures. If no current entry exists, you can still experiment, but you will be working without a documented compatibility baseline.

Step 2: install Wine using current distribution instructions

Follow WineHQ’s instructions for your distribution rather than assuming a package name or repository setup. The correct process can differ among distributions and between 32-bit and 64-bit application requirements. Keep the distribution documentation open while adding repositories, enabling architecture support, or selecting a package.

Step 3: install the Windows application in the documented way

Use the application’s legitimate installer and follow the sequence described in its Wine entry. Some applications need additional Windows libraries or a particular Windows-version setting. If the entry specifies a dependency or launch configuration, apply that instruction before judging whether the installation works.

Step 4: test the functions you actually need

Opening a window is not the same as having a usable installation. Test sign-in, file access, printing, updates, plug-ins, hardware acceleration, and the specific workflow you depend on. Record the Wine version, Linux distribution, application version, and any changes you make so you can reproduce or undo the setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When direct Wine becomes difficult

If you are repeatedly recreating environments, tracking dependencies, or trying several applications with conflicting requirements, a manager such as Bottles can provide clearer separation. Moving to Bottles does not bypass compatibility limits; it changes how the environments are organized.

Running Windows applications with Bottles

Bottles’ official documentation recommends its Flatpak package as the supported and tested installation option. Read the current instructions at Bottles’ installation guide.

Step 1: install Bottles through the supported package

Install the Flatpak build according to the documentation and your desktop’s Flatpak setup. Avoid mixing instructions from unrelated package formats unless the current Bottles documentation specifically supports that arrangement.

Step 2: complete the first launch

On first launch, Bottles downloads runner-related components and other required data before you create a bottle. The documentation describes this as a one-time setup operation. Allow it to finish; interrupting the download can leave you without the runner needed to create or run a program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: create a bottle

Use the interface to create a bottle and choose the environment appropriate to the application. A bottle keeps an application’s Windows-style files and settings separate from other bottles, so a change made for one program is less likely to affect another.

Step 4: use a community installer when one exists

Bottles provides community installers for supported applications. An installer can configure the bottle, add required dependencies, install the software, and expose the resulting program in the bottle’s program list. Review the installer’s compatibility grade and notes before selecting it; an installer automates steps but cannot make an incompatible application compatible.

Step 5: run an installer or executable manually

Bottles documents running .exe, .msi, .bat, and .lnk files through its interface. Open the target bottle, choose the option to run an executable, select the file, and follow the Windows installer. The exact labels can change between releases, so use the current file-running guide if your interface differs.

Step 6: launch from the bottle’s program list

After installation, Bottles can add the application to the bottle’s program list. Launch it there so it uses the same bottle and runner that completed the installation. If you move the application to another bottle, expect to repeat its dependencies and configuration.

Using the Bottles command line

Bottles also documents command-line methods for running supported file types, but command details can differ by build and version. Use the current Bottles documentation overview and its linked command-line guidance instead of treating an example as a universal command.

Running Windows applications with CrossOver

CrossOver installs Windows applications into bottles and can integrate their launchers with the Linux desktop. Its current guides are available in the CrossOver Linux User Guide and the CrossOver User Guide.

Step 1: check the compatibility resources

Search CodeWeavers’ compatibility resources for your exact application and version before installing CrossOver. A listed application may have an installer script and documented notes. If the application is not listed, the guide explains how to try an unlisted installer, but the absence of a listing means you have less application-specific guidance.

Step 2: install CrossOver

Use the vendor’s current Linux installer and follow the requirements for your distribution. The guide says CrossOver is tested on Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and RHEL, while being designed for Linux distributions that meet its stated requirements. This is not a blanket guarantee for every release: the guide warns that compatibility cannot be guaranteed for Linux versions released after a given CrossOver version. Recheck the current requirements before installing on a newly released distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: install a listed application

Choose the application from CrossOver’s catalog and follow the guided installer. CrossOver creates or selects a bottle, runs the installer script, and presents the resulting program for launch. The script can encode dependencies and configuration that you would otherwise have to apply manually.

Step 4: try an unlisted application when necessary

For an unlisted program, select the option to install an unlisted application, provide the legitimate installer, and choose the bottle settings requested by the guide. Treat the result as an experiment unless a current compatibility report supports your exact application and system.

Step 5: use the desktop launcher

When installation succeeds, CrossOver can integrate the application with the Linux desktop. Use the generated launcher so the program opens in its intended bottle. If the program fails after an update, return to the bottle and compatibility notes rather than creating multiple duplicate installations without recording what changed.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The installer will not start

  • Confirm that you selected the correct installer file and that its application version matches the compatibility report.
  • Check whether the report requires a particular runner, Windows-version setting, or dependency.
  • With Bottles, verify that the bottle finished creation and that runner downloads completed during first launch.
  • With Wine, return to WineHQ’s current distribution instructions instead of applying commands copied from another distribution.

The application installs but crashes on launch

  • Compare your application and compatibility-layer versions with the documented entry.
  • Test from the same bottle or environment used for installation.
  • Remove or reverse undocumented tweaks before adding more; otherwise you may not know which change caused the failure.
  • Check whether the application’s current release is newer than the version covered by the report.

The program opens but an important feature fails

Test the specific feature against the compatibility notes. A successful launch does not establish that printing, plug-ins, graphics acceleration, updates, or specialized hardware support works. If the report identifies a limitation, changing from Wine to Bottles or CrossOver may make configuration easier but does not automatically remove the underlying limitation.

A change for one application breaks another

Use separate bottles in Bottles or separate application environments rather than forcing unrelated programs into one configuration. Isolation makes it easier to retain a working setup while experimenting with another runner or dependency.

The distribution is newer than the guide

Check the current project or vendor documentation. CrossOver’s guide specifically cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed for Linux versions released after a particular CrossOver version. Wine package instructions can also change as distributions update repositories and architecture policies.

How to make the final choice

  1. Start with the application report. If the report favors a particular Wine version, runner, or CrossOver release, use that information as the primary decision point.
  2. Choose the amount of control you need. Select direct Wine for manual, distribution-specific setup; Bottles for graphical environment management and separated bottles; or CrossOver for a guided commercial workflow and desktop integration.
  3. Match the workflow to your tolerance for troubleshooting. A community installer or CrossOver script can reduce repetitive configuration, while direct Wine exposes more decisions for users who need them.
  4. Validate the complete task. Test the features that matter to you, not merely whether the application window appears.
  5. Keep a reproducible record. Note the Linux distribution, application version, runner or CrossOver version, bottle settings, and dependencies so you can recover after an update.

What the documentation can—and cannot—establish

The official sources document the architecture and workflows of Wine, Bottles, and CrossOver, but they do not provide a controlled performance comparison or a universal compatibility percentage. They also do not justify promising that any particular Windows application will work on every Linux system. Compatibility is a moving target, so consult the linked project documentation immediately before installation and again when updating the application or Linux distribution.
