In Windows 10, “run Task Manager as administrator” can mean two different things: elevating Task Manager itself, or using Task Manager to start another program with administrator privileges. For most troubleshooting jobs, use Task Manager > More details > File > Run new task, enter the program, select Create this task with administrative privileges, and approve User Account Control (UAC).

Quick answer: launch an elevated program from Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Microsoft lists this as a supported shortcut for Task Manager (Microsoft support).
  2. If you see the small simplified window, select More details. The menu bar, including File, is hidden in compact view.
  3. Select File > Run new task.
  4. Type a command or browse to an executable.
  5. Check Create this task with administrative privileges.
  6. Select OK. Select Yes at the UAC prompt, or enter administrator credentials if Windows requests them.

This normally elevates the program you start, not the Task Manager window that launched it.

The Windows 10 menu path and checkbox are also documented in this step-by-step guide: MSFTNEXT.

What you can launch

Goal Enter in the Open field Expected result
Command Prompt cmd An elevated Command Prompt window
Windows PowerShell powershell An elevated Windows PowerShell session
Registry Editor regedit Registry Editor after UAC approval
Services console services.msc The Services management console
Local Group Policy Editor gpedit.msc Group Policy Editor on editions that include it
System Configuration msconfig System Configuration
File Explorer explorer.exe Explorer starts; an elevated Explorer process is not always useful and its behavior can vary
A particular application A full path such as C:Program FilesAppApp.exe The executable starts elevated if it supports elevation

Do not run every application elevated. Most programs work normally with a standard token, and elevation does not automatically solve application-specific permissions, antivirus controls, service restrictions, or Group Policy blocks.

How to verify that elevation worked

Command-line programs

An elevated Command Prompt commonly has a title such as Administrator: Command Prompt. PowerShell may show an administrator indication in its title or interface. That visual label is useful, but the current folder—such as C:WindowsSystem32—is not proof of elevation.

Graphical programs

Some applications display a UAC shield or an administrator-specific title-bar indicator; others show no obvious sign. For technical verification, inspect the process token or integrity level rather than relying only on a window title.

Run Task Manager itself as administrator

If the target is Task Manager—not another utility—launch its executable directly:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to C:WindowsSystem32.
  3. Find Taskmgr.exe.
  4. Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
  5. Approve UAC or provide administrator credentials.

You can also search for Task Manager from Start, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator when that option is available. The result and wording can vary by Windows 10 build, shell state, and policy, so the System32 path is the dependable fallback.

Simply opening Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, Start search, the taskbar menu, or Ctrl + Alt + Delete > Task Manager does not necessarily elevate it.

If “Run new task” or the administrator checkbox is missing

  • Compact view: select More details first.
  • Standard account: you may need credentials for an administrator account.
  • UAC or security policy: settings may hide or block elevation.
  • Managed computer: an employer or school may restrict Task Manager or elevation.
  • Damaged system or shell: Windows components may be malfunctioning.

A missing checkbox is a warning sign, not conclusive proof that the signed-in account is standard. Microsoft’s guidance explains that elevation depends on account and policy context (Microsoft Community).

If clicking OK does nothing

  1. Check the command or executable path for typing errors.
  2. Try cmd or powershell as a control test.
  3. Look for a UAC prompt behind another window or on another monitor.
  4. Confirm that valid administrator credentials are available.
  5. Restart Windows and retry.
  6. If every elevation route fails, investigate UAC, Group Policy, account corruption, malware, or damaged system files.

On a work- or school-managed device, contact the organization’s administrator instead of attempting to bypass its policy.

If Task Manager will not open

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then choose Task Manager.
  2. Search Start for Task Manager.
  3. Open the Run dialog with Windows key + R, enter taskmgr.exe, and press Enter.
  4. Use another administrator-approved support method.
  5. If the Windows shell is badly damaged, use Windows Recovery or Safe Mode for repair.

If Windows reports that Task Manager is disabled, distinguish a policy restriction from an ordinary application failure; elevation will not override an organizational restriction.

Using an elevated shell for Windows repair

When Start, Search, or Run is broken, Task Manager can provide a route to an elevated Command Prompt. After launching cmd with the checkbox selected, use repair commands only when appropriate:

These commands can take time and may require a restart. Their success depends on the underlying Windows condition; opening an elevated prompt does not guarantee that a repair command will complete.

What administrator elevation does—and does not—do

Windows normally gives applications a standard user token, even when the signed-in account belongs to the Administrators group. UAC confirmation creates an elevated process with the administrator token. It does not switch you to a different person, grant permanent administrator status, or bypass file permissions, protected processes, Group Policy, security software, or organization controls.

Microsoft recommends requesting elevation only when necessary and minimizing the amount of code that runs elevated (Microsoft security guidance). Do not disable UAC, enable the built-in Administrator account, or use “one-click” bypass tools as routine fixes.

Alternatives to Task Manager

  • Run dialog: enter a command and, where supported, press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to request elevation.
  • Start: search for a program, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  • File Explorer: right-click an executable and choose Run as administrator.
  • Power User menu: use the administrator Command Prompt or PowerShell entry when your Windows 10 configuration provides it.
  • Run as another account: runas requires that account’s credentials and is not a way to bypass UAC or policy. Microsoft describes this separation of normal and elevated activity in its administrator-privilege guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does opening Task Manager automatically run it as administrator?

No. The usual shortcut opens Task Manager without guaranteeing an elevated process. Use the Taskmgr.exe context-menu command if Task Manager itself must be elevated.

Can a standard user use Task Manager to launch an administrator program?

The user can request elevation, but must provide valid administrator credentials. Task Manager cannot manufacture or bypass administrator rights.

Does running a program as administrator make it permanently elevated?

No. Elevation applies to that process instance. A later launch normally starts with the standard token again.

Why can an elevated Command Prompt still show “Access is denied”?

Elevation does not override NTFS permissions, protected resources, Group Policy, antivirus controls, or ownership requirements. The specific resource may still be restricted.

Is Taskmgr.exe safe?

The genuine Windows executable is located at C:WindowsSystem32Taskmgr.exe. Avoid similarly named files in other folders.
