Yes, you can run OBS continuously from an India-based VPS, but a low advertised price does not prove that the machine can encode your scene around the clock. OBS on Linux needs a supported display environment and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics; software encoding also puts sustained demand on the CPU. Choose a plan by its sustained performance and outbound-transfer allowance, then test your own stream before relying on it unattended.
Before you start: decide whether a VPS is the right fit
A VPS can keep OBS and a YouTube broadcast running without leaving a computer at home switched on. It is a do-it-yourself setup, though: you manage the Linux environment, display support, OBS process, monitoring, and recovery. OBS lists an X window system or Wayland and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU among its Linux/Unix requirements. Meeting those minimums does not establish that a VPS can encode your chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene continuously. OBS Project’s system requirements explicitly caution that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording.
For software encoding, CPU capacity matters more than the lowest monthly price. Demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A static image with audio and a moving, layered scene are not equivalent workloads. No provider plan cited here is certified for uninterrupted OBS encoding; the only reliable fit check is a sustained test of your own broadcast on the exact plan and region you intend to use.
Use a VPS if you can operate and monitor Linux
- You are comfortable administering a remote Linux machine and checking OBS and YouTube stream health.
- You can verify that the selected image and OBS package have the display and graphics support they need; a bare SSH shell should not be assumed to satisfy OBS’s requirements.
- You can tolerate diagnosing an interrupted stream, resource exhaustion, or provider limits rather than treating the VPS as a managed broadcast service.
Check the channel before automating
Confirm that your YouTube channel is eligible to go live and review the current broadcast controls in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before configuring unattended operation. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-stream guidance are the authoritative references for current requirements and stream-health messages: YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. An older OBS community setup guide can offer workflow context, but its interface directions may not match today’s YouTube Studio.

Compare VPS plans by the costs and limits that affect a 24/7 stream
Compare the exact region and plan—not only its headline monthly price. Record the included outbound transfer, overage terms, CPU behavior, RAM, restart policy, remote access, and total billing details including applicable taxes. A nearby data center may help administration latency, but it does not prove a better network route to YouTube’s ingest servers.

| Amazon Lightsail | As listed on AWS’s pricing page accessed 2026-10-03, a Linux/Unix public IPv4 bundle starts at $5 USD/month and lists 0.5 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer. AWS says Mumbai-region plans have half the transfer allowance shown in the general table. Lightsail pricing | AWS describes Lightsail CPU as burstable and recommends EC2 for workloads needing consistently high CPU, including video encoding. The smallest bundle is not a proven OBS streaming plan. Lightsail bundles and limits |
| DigitalOcean Droplets | DigitalOcean’s pricing page, accessed 2026-10-03, advertises Droplets starting at $4/month and bundled outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB/month. It lists Ubuntu among common Linux distributions and Bangalore among its locations. Droplet pricing | The page does not say that a starter plan is sized or validated for continuous OBS encoding. Estimate transfer before choosing a quota
For a 24/7 stream, a rough data estimate is bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 GB per 24-hour day, before protocol overhead. This is a unit-based estimate, not a provider billing quote. Allow for overhead, uptime, provider accounting conventions, and possible overage, and validate actual usage on the chosen plan. At higher bitrates, transfer can become a material recurring cost even when the VPS itself is inexpensive.
Set a conservative YouTube ingest profile
YouTube requires an encoder configuration for resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, then detects the chosen settings and transcodes the live stream for viewers. Its current guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. The H.264 figures below are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee of VPS network capacity or route quality. See YouTube’s current encoder settings.

| H.264 output | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are from YouTube Help as accessed 2026-10-03. Start with a modest profile your content can support rather than choosing a high resolution simply because the VPS has a large network port. YouTube recommends running a speed test and preflighting with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast; monitor stream health and messages while live.
Set up OBS on the VPS and test before leaving it unattended
- Choose and document the instance. Select an India region if it suits your audience or administration needs. Before ordering, record the exact plan and region, included outbound transfer and overage policy, CPU model or shared/burstable behavior if disclosed, RAM, restart behavior, and billing total.
- Install a supported Linux environment and OBS. Use the distribution’s supported package source and verify that the selected image and setup provide the display stack and OpenGL support required by OBS. OBS’s published Linux requirements name X or Wayland and OpenGL 3.3 compatibility. The cited guidance does not provide a universal headless recipe: do not assume that installing OBS on a bare SSH-only system is sufficient. If your package requires a remote desktop or another correctly configured display session, validate that implementation on the target image rather than treating any one virtual-display recipe as universally supported.
- Create the YouTube broadcast and protect its key. In YouTube Studio, check the current Live Control Room workflow and channel eligibility, configure the broadcast, and copy its stream key into OBS using YouTube’s current instructions. Treat the key like a password: do not paste it into public logs, support posts, scripts, or world-readable configuration files. Prefer RTMPS where available.
- Configure video and audio deliberately. In OBS, set the output resolution and frame rate, select an encoder the VPS can sustain, use CBR, set a bitrate within YouTube’s guidance for that codec and output, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Check that the audio source is present and that the actual scene resembles the moving content you intend to stream.
- Run a representative sustained test. Stream long enough to expose CPU contention, dropped frames, memory pressure, network instability, and transfer use. A multi-hour test is a prudent editorial recommendation, not a YouTube or provider certification standard. Watch OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. Check results from the exact region and plan you will use.
- Test recovery, then arrange supervision. Verify what happens after an instance reboot and confirm that you can restore the broadcast. Only after the test should you configure start-on-boot, process supervision, and alerting. There is no provider-specific or OBS-official systemd unit established here, so validate any service configuration against your OS and OBS package. Keep secrets out of world-readable files and make sure alerts reach someone who can act.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS will not open or reports display/graphics problems | The Linux image or session does not supply the display environment or OpenGL compatibility OBS requires. | Check the OBS system requirements and the selected package’s needs. Validate the display session on that image; do not assume a headless SSH shell is enough. |
| Encoding overload, lag, or dropped frames under load | The CPU cannot sustain the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity, or the instance is contending for shared/burstable CPU. | Inspect OBS statistics and provider CPU behavior. Reduce scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate, then repeat the sustained test. If the CPU remains saturated, choose a plan designed for sustained compute and test it rather than relying on burst performance. |
| YouTube reports poor connection or unstable ingest | The VPS route or available bandwidth is unstable, or configured bitrate exceeds what the route can sustain. | Check YouTube stream health and messages, test from the selected region, and lower bitrate or output settings before retesting. A provider’s advertised transfer quota is not a guarantee of stable ingest. |
| Stream stops after a reboot or OBS exits | OBS is not configured to start again, the display session is unavailable, or the process has no supervision. | Reproduce a reboot during a controlled test. Configure and validate start-on-boot, process supervision, and alerting for the chosen OS and package before relying on unattended operation. |
| Transfer quota runs out or overage appears | Continuous bitrate, overhead, provider counting rules, or plan-specific regional limits exceed the allowance. | Compare measured usage with the selected plan’s regional quota and overage terms. Re-estimate with the actual bitrate and uptime; check specifically for AWS’s reduced Mumbai allowance if using Lightsail. |
| YouTube does not accept the broadcast | Channel eligibility, broadcast setup, key, or encoder settings may be incorrect or out of date. | Review current YouTube Studio Live Control Room settings and YouTube’s encoder guidance. Regenerate or re-enter a key only through the official account workflow, and keep it private. |
